The Night We Lost Him is about estranged siblings Sam and Nora who come together after their father Liam's death to discover his secrets. The novel is a slow family drama instead of a fast-paced thriller, and this was highly disappointing. It didn't land right for me, unfortunately.
This was a really captivating book! The second I've read by Laura Dave and I will be keeping an eye out for any more she has written. Both were wonderful! I loved the depth of family connection that came out in this book. The characters were so real. A great page turner!
This is more of a family drama than a thriller, but the love that could be felt in this book was palpable.
The love between a father and his children, children to their parents, the found love between siblings, and finally the romantic love among partners was breathtaking.
This book made me want to hug my husband and never let go.
I went into this book expecting a mystery but it ended up being, to me, much more focused on family and the complicated relationships within. The characters were complex, with assets and flaws, and, although I did enjoy figuring out the mystery part of the book, I was far more interested in seeing how the characters grew and intertwined with each other. Hard emotions like grief were dealt with in a way that felt realistic and appropriate. I had not read Laura Dave before this book but I will be going back to read her now!
I just fell in Love with this Book. It is Beautiful, Charming, Agonizing, Heartfelt, and Honest. It is a Mystery yes, as Sam and Nora wonder if their father truly fell off a cliff, jumped on purpose, or someone pushed him off. It begins with the grief his death brings as the night on that cliff lead to this. More though, it is an examination of the people we love and often even if we think we know them, there are parts of a person that are held private. It looks at why someone is being private though.
It is a love story. It leaves with a deeply romantic message, that true love really trumps everything else. If you are lucky to find it, take it. I just found this so charming. The world can seem so jaded, as if we can never stop analyzing everything and just really trust our heart. That takes a bit of courage and knowing yourself.
Thank You NetGalley, Laura Dave, and S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books for a copy of this book. I always leave reviews of books I read.
Architect Nora Noone has always loved her father Liam Noone, a hotel magnet, but has never been really close to him. When her step brother contacts her a few weeks after their father's death from a fall at his California retreat, she is surprised. When he asks her to help him look into the death because he believes it is suspicious, she is even more surprised. The decision to travel from New York to California puts both siblings on a path of family drama and suspense. Just who was Liam Noone? Why did he keep the families of his three marriages apart? Why had he been considering selling his holdings and then suddenly changed his mind? Had he been alone on the night of his death? And how will Nora's investigation into these matters threaten her own personal relationships? This is the second book I've read by Laura Dave and honestly, I could read a new story by her every day of the week. She keeps the twists, the hidden secrets and the surprises coming on every page. This is a 5 star plus read.
Laura Dave's books are always so readable and overall this was a great family drama. Yes, I wanted it to be more of a mystery than it was, but that could just be me. But I always enjoy a story with interesting sibling dynamics and dark family secrets.

A solid read with suspense and mystery. Typically a thriller reader I enjoyed the dramatic part of this book. Check your trigger warnings. By the end I was fully invested in finding out what happened to Nora's father. The twist at the end was jaw dropping.
Laura Dave writes another incredible story! I think this is part thriller, part family relational turmoil, and part one's struggle with parental loss. All parts come together to create a story that you get drawn into from the the beginning. The characters will be very relatable for many who have grown up in blended families, and even for those who have not. The suspense you feel as you try to figure out what happened to Nora's father is believable, and will have you guessing until almost the end. A solid 4/5 stars for me.

This didn’t read as a thriller to me more of family drama book. Which had me in a chokehold from the beginning. Love me some family drama.
I read The Last Thing He Told Me a couple of years ago and I couldn’t put it down. I was expecting this novel, also by Laura Dave, to be the same way.
The Night We Lost Him was also a mystery, but with a lot less urgency to it. Nora’s dad falls to his death while on his property in California. Her step brother, Sam, comes to her wondering if he might have been murdered. They spend the book trying to learn more about the parts of their dad’s life that they didn’t know to fill in the gaps.
It was good and if I hadn’t been expecting to be on the edge of my seat the whole time, I think I would have liked it a lot more.

This book got me from the very beginning! I was guessing the whole time. I loved how the mystery unfolded throughout the story. I also loved how the book explores the theme of parental loss and the impact it has on us.
was able to read this novel thru NetGalley and it was an intriguing story. If you liked her previous novel The Last Thing He Told Me you will like this book too. The story of 2 adult children discovering that their father’s death was not an accident makes a good mystery. I enjoyed the characters and the changes in their relationship with each other. Can see this as a limited mini series too,
This was my first read by this author. I have heard amazing reviews of other books so I was excited for this one, however, the writing style doesn’t seem to be for me. The story revolves around estranged siblings following their father’s sudden death. It is mostly told from Nora’s perspective with some flashbacks in third person. I feel like there was a good storyline but the writing style just didn’t hold my interest.
Sam and Nora are estranged siblings. Sam and Nora’s father has died. The investigation seems flawed. Sam and Nora have questions. They start digging. What they find is a lifelong secret that only brings them closer and finally understanding the man they called dad. I identified with Nora, as someone who has lost both parents. The grief that creeps up on you out of nowhere is written well in this book. This is a book about family, about grief, and about the love we have for our family beautifully written as a thrilling mystery. Great book!
THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM is another terrific suspense story from Laura Dave. She is really a fantastic writer. I especially admire how she combines complex family dynamics with a suspenseful storyline. This ones manages to be about both love and secrets. The story really gets going when Nora takes off with Sam to try to investigate what happened to their father.
The father, Liam, also has his own storyline. But don't worry, it's not confusing because the chapters have headings to orient the reader.
The reveals did end up surprising me so I would rate the conclusion as very satisfying.
Recommended for fans of complex family dramas with suspenseful elements.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-galley; all opinions in my review are 100% my own.
When Liame Noone, a wealthy hotel magnate, dies in what authorities call an accidental fall from his cliffside cottage, his estranged children, Nora and Sam, suspect foul play. While piecing together their father's hidden past, they uncover a family secret that transforms their understanding of him and their own lives. I struggled a bit with this one. It was not my favorite of hers and I had a hard time caring about the storyline for most of it but it did come together in the end and the conclusion was satisfying. I think her previous book was so strong that this one didn't quite meet the same level of mystery. Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I can't believe this is my first Laura Dave book. It certainly won't be my last. This book was SO GOOD. From the very start to the tearful ending I was hooked.
This is a love story and a mystery. It's about the love between Liam and Cory. They met in school. Liam's cousin Joe introduced them. In a way.
Nora and Sam are two of Liam's three children. Sam is convinced that Liam's fall was not an accident. He believes someone pushed him. He enlists his sisters help to find out exactly what happened that rainy night. You hear a lot about them and their lives. Or at least Nora's life. She is in a relationship that is somewhat rocky and takes off with Sam across the country to try and figure out what happened. To see if they can get any information. It seems no one wants to say anything. Or maybe they don't really know about the accident but know other things that they can't share. Or won't share.
This story can get confusing if you don't pay attention to the details. To the things going on around the characters. And each chapter has a heading that helps. It's told in two timelines. One before the accident and one back when Liam was young and in love. His love story spans many years. Through his three marriages and three children. His lifelong love with the woman who truly has and always had his heart. Both married to others.
You'll get to know these characters and they will give you lots of feelings. At least they did me. I wanted things to work out for Liam and Cory. For their love story to come full circle. I also wanted Sam and Nora to find out what happened and finally be able to move on with their lives.
The mystery of how Liam died was one that kept me guessing. I did guess but only after someone's other identity was revealed. I have to admit this one had me scratching my head. I thought it was one person and I was so wrong.
A very complex story about love, loss, family, marriage(s). One you don't want to miss. I absolutely loved this book. The love story was perfect. The mystery was revealed. All of my questions were answered and then some. Perfection is what I found.
Thank you #NetGalley, #SimonElement/S&S/MarySueRucciBooks, for this ARC. This is my true thoughts about this book.
Five big stars. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Liam was a self-made hotel magnate with three ex-wives and three children by two different wives. He loved his children, but he kept the families separate. Nora and her two half-brothers barely know each other and are estranged. But then Liam falls over a cliff and dies. Sam, Nora’s half-brother, reaches out to Nora with concerns over their father’s death. It seems suspicious. The two go to California to ask questions about their father’s death, but end up with more questions than answers. There is so much that they didn’t know about their father. Those who were closest to Liam are not sharing his secrets.
Nora is grieving her father’s death, but also the fairly recent death of her mother. As she grieves, she throws herself into finding the truth about her father’s death. Unfortunately, she finds herself emotionally distancing herself from her fiancé.
Told primarily from Nora’s point of view, the novel also contains flashbacks where the reader learns of Liam’s past. As a high school student, Liam meets Cory. Theirs is a love story that spans 50 years, yet Nora and Sam had never heard of her. Their father kept his private life secret – even from his own children. It isn’t until the end of the book that the reader learns who Cory really is.
The Night We Lost Him is more family drama than mystery. It is definitely more character-driven. It has a slow pace, but it didn’t take long to read. I expected it to be a page-turner like The Last Thing He Told Me, but it wasn’t. However, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for providing me with an advanced review copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley for my review copy of this book.
This was my first to read this author and unfortunately, her writing style is just not for me. The story is told from Nora's POV with some flashback chapters told in third person. After her father's death, he brother starts asking questions as to the cause which leads them on a search for answers to their father's hidden past. There was a bit of mystery but not suspenseful in the least.
