I love Highlander romances, and Heather McCullum does an excellent job writing them. Rory and Sara were great together and had amazing chemistry! This book had so much going on that I enjoyed. It had villains that you could truly hate, side characters that were quirky, a good amount of steam, and copious secrets to unravel.
The Highlander's Wild Flame was a wonderful start to a new series. I look forward to reading the next installment.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Thank you to the publisher, Netgalley, and the author for the review copy of this book!
Typically, historical romance is not my first choice of reading. But this had forbidden romance and enemies to lovers? Blood feuds and betrayals?
This was a fantastic read that grabbed at my fantasy loving shelf's heart!
I loved The Highlander’s Wild Flame by Heather McCollum! It’s such a fun mix of romance and adventure in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. The characters have great chemistry, and I felt so drawn into their story. McCollum does a fantastic job bringing the setting and the drama to life, making it a hard book to put down. If you’re into historical romance with a bit of mystery, this one is definitely worth a read!
I really enjoyed reading this book. I like historical romances, but the female leads aren’t always fleshed out. Sara is strong and brave and I really enjoyed reading about her. Rory is also a great male lead. I really enjoyed reading about their relationship development and them falling for each other. This was a great mix between traditional historical romance, while still being updated enough for modern day readers. I’m looking forward to reading book two!
Heather McColluim writes an amazing story. This one is another really good one. Don't plan on sleeping until you've finished.
Having read some of Heather McCollum’s historical romances, I got offered an arc for the first part of a new series. As I’ve written about a previous book, the stories can be read perfectly as a standalone (as I had accidentally done with The Highlander’s Secret Avenger). And since this one is the first in a new series, you get an introduction into the two main clans of this series: The MacLeods and the Macdonalds The story has spunk, drama, humor and suspense.
And duh… of course romance. If you like historical romance, then Heather is definitely a great choice for you. Four out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
Truly enjoyed this story! Rory & Sara were great characters & Heather McCollum did a fantastic job bringing their love to life. I can’t wait to read more of her books!
At the heart of The Highlander’s Wild Flame is the romance between Sara and Rory. I liked them together and thought they had good chemistry. Rory makes mistakes due to his aforementioned trust issues, but overall they are a solidly entertaining couple. They are both kind, compassionate, and willing to fight for what’s right. I was rooting for them every step of the way even as I was unsure of how McCollum would make things work out with constant treachery afoot.
Stunning, action-packed and filled with romance!
In what appears to be the first in a new series, we're treated to an astonishing and captivating love story set amidst clan feuds and family treachery. Rory and Sara are brought together by an attempt by her father and his brother to unite their two warring clans, but absolutely nothing goes according to plan.
I was constantly surprised by the layers and layers of secrets and hidden connections that were slowly revealed as Rory and Sara figure out what to do with their forbidden attraction to each other while also trying to figure out how to save their own families from the consequences of betrayal. The story moves beautifully along with exquisite attention to detail and a sizzling hot romance at the center of it all.
Replete with phoenix imagery and just the slightest touch of the supernatural, this is a thoroughly engaging story with a triumphant HEA that also gives up the beginning of the next love story for one of the heroes in the prologue. This is historical romance at its very best and I highly recommend it for every romance reader. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

The Highlander’s Wild Flame is the first in a new series by Heather McCollum, Brotherhood of Solway Moss. This is a historical spicy romance based in the Scottish Highlands.
The beginning of the book sets up the series. Four Highlander’s from warring clans are imprisoned by the English army. Left there by each of their families in exchange for a their father or another sibling. As prison life gets more desolate, the four Highlander’s swear a blood oath to each other in exchange for working together to escape prison.
Rory MacLeod is back from Solway prison and will not take for granted his freedom or the oath he made to get it. Rory is the second in-line to lead the clan after his older brother James who is ruthless.
James is set to marry the daughter of rival clan MacDonald and sister of one of the four men Rory swore an oath to. On the wedding day, James and his family are locked in the church that set to a fire to by the MacDonald chief in an effort to take over their clan.
The daughter Sara who knew nothing of the plans, goes against her father and clan to save the Macleod clan from the church. Sara now under suspicion of helping is seen as an enemy to the MacLeod’s.
Rory doesn’t believe Sara had anything to do with it. So now he needs to prove her innocence and keep her from marrying his brother. Rory and Sara have a chemistry they can’t seem to deny but Rory already fell for a lying MacDonald 10 years before.
Can Rory get over his past to see a future with Sara? This book had many of the wonderful things I love about this authors books. Deep and rich history, beautiful Highland landscapes and rugged tough Highlanders. I didn’t feel the chemistry or character development in this one like I have the rest. This is a 3 star for me and I will definitely read the rest of the series to see how the stories and characters develop.

In this amazing historical romance based in Scotland you will find Rory and Sara! She is a strong, proud, almost fearless FMC, and a perfect match for Rory. Except she is “off limits”!! The banter in this book is just chefs kiss amazing!! I loved the excitement and intrigue from the danger of the wars, battling clans, and forced betrothals to attempt and make peace. But even with all of that the passion and humor was so beyond great! Be sure to care for your mental health and read the content warnings as this book does includes death, abuse, threats of sexual assault, and more.
Oh my goodness, this one was wild! Sara has been forced to marry someone she basically hates, and on his deathbed she ends up falling for his brother! The way that enemies to lovers and forbidden romance was done here is pure perfection!
If you enjoy stories in Scotland, like me, this book will not disappoint!
Like all Heather McCollum books, we have a lovable couple that must surpass a hurdle to be together, in this case it's an almost marriage and the fact that the FMC is from an enemy clan.
It was an easy read for me, but the only thing I must say, that has nothing to do with this book specifically, is that the story feels like something I read before. Maybe my obsession with books that have Scotland as a background has finally caught up to me but it felt like I was rereading a novel.
Overall it was a nice read, with cute main characters.
3,5 stars
Rory and Sara are the perfect coupl
Rory returns from being held captive around with others, including the brother to woman he's supposed to marry.
Sara runs into Rory at the beach and it's instant attraction by both parties.
Their wedding is a disaster but their passion is real, strong, and undeniable. The characters are wonderfully developed. The storyline is perfection and the plot is without and holes or mistakes.
I highly recommend this book and easily gave it 5/5 stars. Absolutely wonderful book!
I received a copy of this not from NetGalley and am happily giving my honest review.
I enjoyed Rory and Sara's story. And I loved Rory's dirty mouth during their intimate moments.
There were quite a few fun characters and more than one villain to deal with. And plenty of secrets to unravel. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Lady Sara MacDonald is set to marry into the MacLeod clan. They are her father's enemies and all she's heard are horrible stories about them. But if joining the clans means peace she'll marry the chief of the clan.
But when her father locks the wedding party in the church and sets fire to it, she jumps into action to save the people trapped inside. She knows her father will see her as a traitor but she'll take her chances with the MacLeod's over her father.
Rory MacLeod, the Lion of Skye, is a fearsome Highland warrior who was held prisoner in place of his brother and has recently returned home, in time to see his brother get married.
But with his brother injured and incapacitated after the fire, he is now in charge of leading the clan. And one of only a few who believe Lady Sara was not working with her father to kill the MacLeod leader. They are both attracted to each other but don't want to cross any lines. Plus, Rory made a vow to never trust another woman. And she constantly hears her father's voice putting her down.
Until caught in a storm, they finally give in.
Thanks so much to the author and Entangled for this ARC to review.
I started this one a while ago, and the beginning gripped me. Rory and Sara's meeting, her ill-fated marriage to his brother and the disaster that immediately followed--OMG, I couldn't put it down. But then I realized that I hadn't been paying attention to IRL dates (can I blame being on vacation? Because I'm going to) and had to put it temporarily aside to meet some review due dates. Lots of review due dates. Sigh.
Then I came back to...Rory being disappointing. Ugh--he's so back and forth with trusting and believing Sara to not quite trusting but maybe believing her to maybe he'll give her the benefit of a d--no, wait, he's going to make her leave his clan without being man enough to talk to her about it first. Grrrrrr.
He pulls his head out of his posterior--FINALLY--really close to the end and Sara and I decided to forgive him and they had a lovely wedding, which we sadly had to see through a 3rd person (it's the epilogue and is obviously setting up book 2, which I can appreciate, but I really would have liked to have seen it from one of the MC POVs, TBH.)
Still, I loved Sara--that poor woman, how much more could she possibly have thrown at her in the course of a single story? Yet she just kept going, like the bada** heroine she is--and her oldest brother and sisters; they were all absolutely fabulous. Her aunt who lives in the forest with her crows? Also awesome. Though I'm personally terrified by the idea of Kenan's invention (I suppose I'd try it to save my life, but not for anything less thankyouverymuch), I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen with it in the next book. And of course I'll be back to meet the other 2 men in the "Brotherhood" when it's their turn, though we don't see them much here at all.
TL:DR: solid start, great ending, but what's in between falters a bit at times...I'm 100% looking forward to Sara's brother Kenan's book, though!

Gripping Tale of Love and Betrayal
Sara MacDonald is a pawn in the power play between two rival clans. The MacDonalds and the MacLeods. Her father is ruthless and will use Sara and her betrothal to Laird MacLeod to achieve his devious plans. Having no stomach for senseless slaughter, Sara helps her rivals, betraying her father and leaving herself completely vulnerable.
Her self sacrifice is treated with suspicion. If this wasn’t dire enough, Sara begins to have feelings for her betrothed’s brother, Rory MacLeod. A forbidden romance becomes the main focus causing more tension, thrill and suspense to an already gripping tale.
This story was well written with an intriguing storyline. Forbidden romance, enemies-to-lovers, historical romance, betrayal and redemption. Overall, a great story that pulls you into another time and era full of drama and adventure.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a very intriguing story. There was a lot of twist and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat, and not wanting to put it down till the very end. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys history and suspense.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.
THE BANTER WAS SO GOOD! I absolutely loved this book. I already want to read it again. I love an historical fiction, especially the Romeo and Juliet vibes that I saw in this one. Who doesn't love a forbidden romance? I cannot wait to read more by this author!
Rating: 4.5/5
I received an eARC for my honest opinion.
This was my first Heather McCollum book, and it will not be my last one. I loved this author’s writing style. It was engaging historical romance, with a lot of action, romance, betrayal, and secrets. I thought the author wrote an excellent historical romance, she made it so I could picture everything that was happening and nothing seemed off to me when reading it.
This starts with two clans that have been in raging wars for years, they have come up with a plan to marry their oldest to each other. Rory is the second child to the MacLeod clan, and he has been back from being a captive in the war with England, he was there with 4 other clan members and one of them being Sara’s other brother. The 4 men escape from the prison and try to make it back to normal day clan life but it's not easy with Rory’s brother being married to a MacDonald. One day on the beach Sara and Rory run into each other not knowing who each of them is until later that day at the wedding. Of course, the wedding is a wreck, and someone is trying to murder a whole clan. Can Rory and Sara make it past all the bloodshed, the betrayals, and come out on the other side?
This book was action packed and the way that the author wrote the scenes had me loving every moment of it. I loved the twists and turns that the story took with the betrayal and the lies, I was on the edge of my seat wondering who was the real person that was feeding all the information to the other clan if it wasn’t Sara. I liked how the author made it come out and how she made sure that Rory was the one that saved Sara this time… You know when you read the book what I am talking about.
The characters were well developed. I liked the character growth of both Sara and Rory but even the side characters that came around to liking Sara even though who her father was. I liked the fact that Sara was a strong character, but you can see that she still has flaws, which made her more human to me. I found her attitude for knowing the truth to be refreshing and exciting to watch her trying to figure out all the issues.
Rory was a typical highlander but at the same time he wasn’t. He wanted to heal from the wars and learn to join the clans of Scotland together because he knew that one day there would be a war against them and that they would all need to be together. I was a little mad at him when he would think the worst about Sara, but I could understand because of his past but at the same time I wanted to shake him, and say come on this is someone totally new lol. Overall, I really liked these characters and the side characters in this book, and I can’t wait for the next book to come out.
I want to thank NetGalley and Entangled publishing for the opportunity to review this book
