The story has its highs and lows of excitement for me. The characters are entertaining to the story. The plot gives the story the drama that the readers want. The story moves a little slow. The romance is a slow burn. At some points I did get lost in the story and had to re -read the page.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think I need to first admit that Jamie (not this one) and Claire have ruined me. I can’t help but hold a Scottish themed romance to their standard. Iykyk. While I did find this an overall enjoyable read it was a bit slow and the main character chemistry was a little lacking, the spicy scenes.. ehh. I liked the mfc, she was pretty badass, but the mmc just annoyed me. Now, what I really enjoyed and stood out to me were the supporting characters. So quirky, fun, loyal and I loved the banter between them. This story has a little bit of everything: romance, spice, drama, mystery and action. I enjoyed it as a nice summer read but not sure if I’ll continue the series.

ARC Review of The Highlander's Wild Flame by Heather McCollum
* * * * *
For the lovers of sizzling historical romances, those obsessed with Outlander, and the ladies who just cannot pass up a hot strong-willed man with a scottish accent.
Sara was a tool in a devious plan she knew nothing of. Even when she risks everything to do the right course of action, life and reputation, she is still seen as the enemy.
Though it appears one person is slowly coming to her side.
The wounded brother of her grown, a man with a vow and a past of heartbreak. Even as deceipt and violence follow Sara, putting her in the spotlight as nothing more than a murderer and spy, Rory is by her side.
As family secrets spill out in the castle walls, brotherhood and friendship is tested on the innocence of one fiery haired woman and the possession of an item that could bring power or peace to a war.
An epic thrilling read. Very well detailed and descriptive writing that was enough to paint the picture in your head but not get you lost in adjectives. The introduction of Rory provides your assurance that there is more to come from this author, which I am happy to see as I would indeed love to grab the next one in this series.
Sara is a woman who does not take things lying down. She fights for her life and her innocence, for her family, and for the growing love she feels for Rory. Rory has had his own share of deceiptful women, but his view on Sara is quite unwaivering most of the time. Even as others say she is guilty, he's with her.
We are given several historical twists, one specifically just outright in the air of all things. We are given seriously spicy moments that are just thunderous with delicious heat. We are given danger and mystery and epic reveals.
5 stars!
I love a good Highlander historical romance and this one checks all the boxes.
🏴 Feuding clans? Yep
🏴 Forbidden romance? Check.
🏴 Bada** FMC? 100%
🏴 Spice? 🌶️
The banter was great, there were some great plots twists that I definitely wasn’t expecting, and I love how the author set up the second book in the series while wrapping up Rory and Sara’s tale. Overall a great, quick read that I highly recommend!
If I had realized that this was the first book in a new series, I might not have read it, but not because of McCollun, who usually writes enjoyable books, but rather because I now try to read only stand alone. That said, Rory and Sara are also two interesting characters, but they suffer from all the space they have to devote to describing the problems that will later form the skeleton of the main Arc of the series, which may involve 4 books, but I am not sure. Because of this, the book drags at times and is not paced, although the plot is not bad even though it is rather well known.
I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
Immerse yourself in a richly woven tapestry of romance and intrigue with this captivating historical novel set in medieval Scotland. Experience a world brought to life with meticulous detail, from the enchanting Scottish dialects to the vivid descriptions of the rugged landscapes, majestic castles, and the intricate clan hierarchy.
At the heart of the story are Rory and Sara, a compelling duo whose emotional journey will leave you breathless. Their complex, authentic characters spring to life through consistent, true-to-form actions, drawing you deeper into their world of love, betrayal, and redemption.
Prepare for a whirlwind of emotions as you navigate a plot brimming with passion, scandal, murder, and secrets. Each twist and turn promises to keep you riveted until the very last page. Note: The story includes some steamy scenes, occasional off-screen violence, and a sprinkling of colorful language.
4.5/5 Star review.
A big thanks to NetGalley for sponsoring this as an ARC for my honest review. Happy Reading
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC.
This was my first Heather McCollum book and I loved it! I was happy to see that this was book 1 in a series (Brotherhood of Solway Moss) and I'm very much looking forward to the next installment. Thank goodness that McCollum has a backlog of titles to choose from while I wait.
The premise of this story focuses on four Scottish sons from opposing warring clan. They are imprisoned together and form an unbreakable bond.
Rory comes home to his clan feeling out of place and struggles with his brother the chieftain.
He becomes entranced with Sara who is from an opposing clan.
The story is complicated with betrayals and it moves quickly with action packed scenes.
Really enjoyed the characters and their backgrounds with a few surprises along the way.
Highly recommend and hoping for more stories of the other sons.
I rather enjoyed this book. Roxy and Sara have a piece of my heart. And the ending?! Give me more already!!! I sped through the story bc I was so on the edge of my seat, and now I want to read it again! 10/10. The author did a great job keeping me engaged.
This was a great adventure with humour that will make you laugh out loud! Not only do we see romance unfold on the Isle of Skye, but there are two old men (John and Simon) who will give you a humorous whip lash from their antics. Along with this, suspense builds, mysteries unfurl, and love finds a way. Time flies by as your reading and I'm looking forward to book 2.
For my unbiased and honest opinion, I was gifted this ARC through Netgalley.
The Highlander’s Wild Flame by Heather McCollum
They first saw each other on the beach when she helped him save his old dog, Gus, from drowning in the rough sea. Rory Macleod was very handsome, and Sara hoped he was the chief of his clan, whom she was to marry the next day. But that was his older brother, Jaime. Sara’s father was the chief of the Macdonald clan.
The wedding was supposed to bring peace and unite the enemy clans. Instead, Sara’s father locked the Macleod members of the wedding party in the small church, barred the doors, and set it on fire. Sara was horrified, found an access door that led under the church, and rescued the Macleods.
Instead of being grateful, the entire Macleod clan, including Rory and Jaime, assumed Sara was in on this plot, and they kept her as a prisoner. Although Sara and Rory grew closer over time, this was the first of many incidents in which Sara was blamed for something she didn’t do.
For me, this was a high angst book because of Rory’s constant struggle to believe and trust Sara, and the effect that had on her. The third act breakup was very sad, so if you’re weepy, you’ve been warned.
Overall, this enemies to lovers book was a page turner. It is the first book in a new series, and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Rory MacLeod also known as the Lion of Skye being the commander of the MacLeod warriors as he has not had an easy life. First he takes his father’s heir’s place at Solway Moss where he was captured by the English and lives in prison with three of his enemies for over a year. However his father was dead, unknown to him and his brother the current laird acted like he was already dead. His brother Jamie was cruel and selfish and acted like Rory was already dead! It was the same for all the prisoners no one brought them any provisions that would make prison life easier! No food, blankets or coins, they became brothers realizing England was their true enemy and eventually escaped together.
Rory meets Sara MacDonald not realizing it was his disloyal brothers betrothed. A lass who had a talent for healing and a love for dogs. However, his disloyal brother Jamie already had a mistress, was a liar and only cared about his own selfish desires. Afterall his father was dead and Rory did not hear from anyone in over a year in that stinking prison. His brother acted as if Rory died too, not expecting for him to return to their MacLeod family at Dunvegan Castle.
Rory was very disappointed when he discovered he was attracted to his new almost sister-in-law. Except after the wedding ceremony was over Sara noticed something was wrong and all The MacDonald warriors were missing. Then the MacDonald clan were trying to lock them in the church and burn them to death! They thought they could steal The MacLeod holdings and lands with this mass murder! Walter MacDonald had been a horrible father Sara’s entire life calling her ugly because of a birthmark. He even asked her to become their spy and steal the fairy flag once she was married to the MacLeod Laird.
At first Rory felt Sara was part of the MacDonalds plan to do a mass murder of the entire MacLeod clan. He destroys all evidence of a marriage until he realizes she was trying to save them. For this her MacDonald Chieftain was furious and just abandoned Sara feeling she betrayed them! The last thing Chief Walter MasDonald wanted was peace with the MacLeod’s even with a marriage alliance. He always told her how ugly she was not any good for him in alliance knowing she would never be with his allies but good enough with their enemies!
The MacDonald chief abandons her knowing she would be blamed especially after calling her The Flame of Dunscaith
to take the punishments of all his cruel, deceptive, murderous, intentions no matter what the cost! Thinking he could own MacLeod land and holdings, especially the Fairy Flag! Her father knew she had warned the MacLeods and felt she had betrayed him and her clan! This MacDonald Chief and Sara’s father never showed her any kind of love or emotion. She only stayed there to care for her twelve year old sister with a spinal condition. Another female child he rejects.
Now her wedded husband Jamie MacLeod is between life and death. However the attraction between Rory and Sara just grows, as Rory is confused having been betrayed by a MacDonald lass he cared for in the past. However it took over a decade for his MacLeod clan to trust him again. Do Rory and Sara have a chance at a HEA? Furthermore, will these feelings they have for each other start a war? Read and find out!
My go-to-author Heather MacLeod pens another brilliant book I could not put down. I love when true history is weaved with a fictional romance that is always phenomenal. I am a big fan of the real MacLeod Clan with the fairy flag that still exists at Dunvegan castle today. It is in the Isle of Skye, in Scotland with other treasured artifacts that are truly magical. An area of Scotland that I have visited with the breathtaking fairy pools, enchanting gardens and lovely hiking area too. As for this reason the book had me mesmerized right from the start. I absolutely loved Rory and Sara’s story and look forward to the next book in this new series! It is definitely a book readers do not want to miss!

the highlander’s wild flame 🏹
This book reminded me why I used to like reading highlander romance books - it’s been a while since a read one of these and my obsession has returned 🥹.
Scotland history has always fascinated me- this is the first place in my bucket list 🏔️. I mean Scotland’s national animal is the unicorn, isn’t that cool? 👀.
I’m babbling, let’s focus more 😂.
The Highlander’s Wild Flame is such a wonderful book and I’m smitten 🤩. Rory and Sara love story had so many challenges and so many twists that I’m OBSESSED with it.
Rory made me feel a little frustrated but I could understand his frustration and trust issues- I mean, a man who went through hell of course wouldn’t trust easily, so I forgive him 🫶🏽.
Sara was a sweet 💕. Love when authors write strong females and Sara was indeed a strong one. She didn’t stay quiet waiting for her destiny, she fought for it and I applaud her .
This book is a wild ride and you must be patient, especially with my boy Rory. Just love him and understand him, okay?
Betrayal, magic, lies and secrets. This book has everything and I need the second book ASAP 🤯. That last chapter was 😮💨.
Thanks to NetGalley, Heather McCollum and the publisher for the early copy.
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this one. Generally, I love McCollum's Highland romances, and there are aspects of this one that I like. The setting is beautiful and vivid, the writing is engaging, and the chemistry between Sara and Rory is off the charts with tons of sexual tension and delicious tropes. Their story is an enemies-to-lovers romance, and I know being from rival and feuding clans with a dark history would create distrust, but Rory takes it to a whole other level at a point when it felt unreasonable to feel that way. For me, his lack of trust in Sara takes away from their love story. It's too bad, because they both have compelling backstories, and I really wanted to root for them. By the end, however, I kind of questioned why Sara would take Rory back. He did her so wrong, and he should have groveled a heck of a lot more before he earned her forgiveness.
I did like the vivid Highland setting, and the plot and history between the clans is intriguing. I also liked the secondary characters, though I wish some of them were fleshed out a little more. And I would recommend checking out the content warnings, as the story includes death, abuse, threats of sexual assault, and more.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
Another generally enjoyable highland adventure romance from this author!
These books are not entirely my cup of tea but I can appreciate them for what they are. I thought this offering even stronger than some of this authors other work, the chemistry of the main characters worked for me and I thought the characters and plot were well developed and paced.
I was so excited to get an ARC of Heather McCollum's most recent book. I've recently read a lot of her books and highly recommend listening to at least one of them on audiobook so you can hear the Scottish accent in your head while reading.
The Highlander's Wild Flame was a fun read that I devoured in one day. The main character Sara Macdonald is set to marry a Scottish man from an enemy clan, the MacLeods in hopes of brokering peace. When her father sets the peace ablaze, the marriage contract is off and her former betrothed's clan believes she is guilty. Rory MacLeod, the brother of her former betrothed, won't let her run away and she also can't return to her clan. While the MacLeods want to burn her alive, Rory advocates for her to stay alive in the tower (and not the dungeon pit) because she took action that he believed meant she knew nothing of her father's deceipt. But Rory has a difficult past when it comes to women and isn't sure if he can trust Sara. Featuring a poisoning, a missing fairy flag, and familial secrets.
I loved the strong female lead character. Sara is fiery and says what she thinks. Rory, while obviously a tough warrior, learns how to let joy into his life again. The passion between the two main characters is evident from their first meeting and there are some spicy scenes. The secrets started piling up and really kept the book moving. The side characters were also notable and felt fully developed to where I would read a sequel with any of them. I felt like this book had more depth to it than some of McCollum's other adventures, and I really loved that and look forward to the future ones in the series.
My one critique is that it was slightly jarring to read the intro quotes at the start of each chapter and see them followed by a .com source. I know it's important to cite sources, but I wonder if there is a way to do it that doesn't take the reader out of the historical context.
Overall, a great read and I will still try to be one of the first to grab a Heather McCollum book when it comes out! Thanks to Entangled Insiders for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
The Highlander’s Wild Flame is the first in Heather McCollum’s new Brotherhood of Solway Moss series. She is my go-to author for Highlander romance. I loved the immediate enemies to lovers vibes we get from Rory and Sara. It kept me hooked the whole way through. It had the perfect amount of history, banter, and spice. Can’t wait for the next one!
So happy to see a new series starting for Heather McCollum. This new series starts out with our hero locked in a prison in England with three other men who were always considered to be enemies. But sometimes the bonds forged in adversity are stronger than those of the family. Especially when it's the family that has left you in prison! When Rory meets Sara, he can't help but be attracted to her. Too bad she is about to marry his brother to broker a peace agreement. But not all is as it seems.
This was a great series opener, and even though I often got frustrated by Rory, I did enjoy watching the drama unfold with Sara and Rory. Looking forward to what is next in the series.
This book wasn’t bad but it didn’t feel like it applied to me. As a 24 year old reader, I felt like I was borrowing my mom’s book. It definitely appeals to a different age group and just didn’t hold my attention.
Once I started this I found I did not want to put it down. It's clear from the beginning that Sara and Rory are meant to be together so the question was how exactly would that come to pass given that shortly after we meet her she is standing at the church ready to marry his brother. I did wonder how the betrayal mentioned in the synopsis came about exactly and that got answered pretty much right away. The story moves at a good pace for the most part, but I did think there were a few parts that dragged on a little longer than needed. I liked how Sara stood up to anyone who tried to push her around - and how could you not cheer her on after she punched Winnie square in the face. I understood why everyone at Dunvegan doubted her, but I still felt so bad for her. I was glad that she didn't just accept Rory's apology right away at the end, he had treated her pretty poorly and she needed to be sure of both herself and him before giving things another try. Nothing wrong with having the man prove with words and actions that he is sorry and knows he messed up. I really enjoyed the family relationships throughout the book - Rory and Eleri, Sara and Kenan, Sara and Eliza, etc. It made them into more well-rounded characters and showed a side that we didn't get to see when it was just the two of them. The battle scene here is mostly off-page, but that is made up for with the action involving Sara getting out of the burning building. With how awful Jamie was to just about everyone, but especially to Rory, I kind of hope that he realized he had been guilty of being hoodwinked in the same way he continuously reminded Rory he had been all those years ago. I was a little bummed we didn't get any resolution to the Gilbert problem, but I'm sure that will be taken care of in the next book which focuses on Kenan. And I have to say, for someone who pretty much hid herself away from the world, Morag did seem to have all the good gossip. This was a great start to the series and definitely has me excited to see what happens next.
