I want the whole thing. Love these books. TJ Klune is a fantastic author and so original. Really looking forward to this book.
It was an absolute joy to read the first four chapters of the upcoming sequel to The House in the Cerulean Sea, Somewhere Beyond the Sea. I loved starting to take the journey back into that house with Linus, Arthur, and the amazing children they foster. The kids are back up to their usual antics in the beginning of the novel; whereas Arthur and Linus are off to London for Arthur to describe the horrendous conditions he went through as a child.
Although I'm extremely grateful for Tor Books for allowing me to read the first four chapters, it was not nearly enough. I really want to continue reading the story NOW. Sadly the book doesn't release until September 10th, so I'll have to wait several months to do so. I know when it arrives I'll gobble it up if this excerpt is any inclination of how my reading will go with the full novel.
Somewhere Beyond the Sea (Excerpt), TJ Klune

Book 2 from The House in the Cerulean Sea
🌊🌊🌊 Just like that, I am instantly back in this magical, fantastical world. Where love guides these beautiful people through all that is broken in the world. Klune has another master piece brewing and I can’t wait to see the rest of the journey he has in store for Arthur, Linus, Chauncey, Sal, Lucy, Talia and the rest of the gang. It’s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ already.

Thank you NetGalley and Tor Publishing for this advance reader copy excerpt for a review. Made my day! #tjklunebooks @torbooks
Eager to read the rest after this four chapter excerpt. I found the first book in a thrift shop a year or so ago, and I've fallen in love with Klune's other writing since. I like returning to this world, though I'll say I have some worldbuilding quibbles especially around the existence of queerphobia/misogyny AND magical persons being implied more heavily here than in the first novel. I think the first novel threads its needle well on a world where real-life history and persons exist, but it remains to be seen if continuing to write in such a world won't put Klune out over his skis. That said! God, I adore how this man writes children. I stand by how children are the weirdest people I know, and he delivers on that feeling without going over the edge into twee or overly "quirky" for its own sake. I think it might be worth asking how researched the anti-queer bias is when it comes to time period this story seems to be taking place in (something like late 70s, early 80s based on the tech and ages of characters), i.e. transgender wasn't the vernacular for folks but usually transsexual or we had people going with just Queer more broadly. It's not massive but it takes me out and makes me question when or where we are in a way the previous book did not.
Anyways! The moment TJ's got a signing for this one, I'll be there! I want to see him succeed at what he's going for with this seaquel!
Loved being able to read an except to Somewhere Beyond the Sea. Going back to Marsyas Island and reading about Arthur, Linus, and all the kids again was amazing. It made me even more excited about reading the book in full.
Absolutely loved the excerpt! It’s been a while since I read the first book, but I quickly remembered why I loved it so much! It was so easy to fall back in love with the characters and to get caught up in their lives! I cannot wait for the full title to be released!
Oh my goddd I cannot WAIT for this book to be out!! Counting down the days! This except was so good and I'm so excited to read the full book.
What a tease! I can’t wait for the full book. Coming back to this family is such a joy. I need to know what happens next!
I read The House in the Cerulean Sea a few months ago, and have been looking forward to reading the sequel when it is released. I was fortunate enough to have been provided with an advanced excerpt from Somewhere Beyond the Sea, and am already loving the book. It has all the same adorable found family moments while covering difficult topics of discrimination. I can’t wait to read the full thing.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me an ARC copy of the book. Heartwarming. Can't wait for the whole novel. The feels pick up right where the first one leaves off
Had zero idea this was just an excerpt but I knew I’d love anything that TJ Klune writes. Can’t wait for the entire book.
This excerpt was great - I can’t wait for the full novel in September.
Being back in this world with these characters felt like coming home. The love Linus has found with this family of children (and Arthur) just makes me heart sing. The excerpt ends right before what I suspect is the conflict of the novel and I would expect the novel to progress to high stakes. But the first 4 chapters were full of light hearted fun, lovable character interactions and hilarious moments.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Tor for this excerpt of Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune in exchange for my honest review! I adored The House in the Cerulean Sea, so I was extremely excited to get a sneak peak of this sequel. To those that might be unfamiliar with these books, the first one follows Linus, a case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. Linus' life is dreary and mundane- he works long hours for his job with little in return, and goes home every day to his cat in his lonely London home. One day Linus is assigned a very special case at work, in which he is to visit an orphanage of magical children and determine whether the home is being run according to government standards. At this orphanage on an island, Linus meets Arthur, the strange but charming caretaker responsible for six magical children, who have been reported to be extremely dangerous by government officials. Linus forms an unexpected bond with the inhabitants of this little island in the cerulean sea and learns that the children are so much more than the case files originally reported them to be.
This excerpt was everything that I was hoping the second book to be! If I had to describe this book in one word it would be heartwarming. So far this book has been nothing but funny, sweet, and so adorable that I can't help but smile while reading it. The characters all have their own distinct personalities and I really enjoy reading the dynamic between them all. Even though the excerpt has been sweet so far, I know that the completed story will probably make me cry as conflicts emerge. I really like that this book is not only a great story but there are also deeper topics explored that are extremely relevant to the real world. Cannot wait to read the full book!
This was just an excerpt, but I am, as always, hooked by Klune’s writing. It is whimsical and fantastical but also cuts to the quick about truly important topics. I really enjoyed this and I am greatly looking forward to the full book. This whetted my appetite even more for these characters, whom I thought could not love any more than I did when I read about them in House of the Cerulean Sea. Giving a star rating is difficult off of only 4 chapters, but suffice to say I am intrigued.
I was given an excerpt of this book to read and review.
WOW!!! Easily a five-star read, no questions asked! I am so happy to have this pre-ordered for its release day!
I loved getting a little glimpse into Arthur's back story right from the get-go. Klune instantly transports you back to the island and you immediately feel like you have been welcomed back into a chaotic, love-filled family reunion. I adored getting to read more about all the "kids" and seeing Linus and Arthur's relationship blossom in a way we didn't get much of in the first novel.
This duology will forever be my go-to recommendation for a feel-good story that will leave you smiling and your heart warmed.
Anything written by T. J. Klune is an instant buy for me, and Somewhere Beyond the Sea is no exception. I am beyond excited for this book! Full of the same whimsical charm of The House in the Cerulean Sea, this excerpt was four chapters of heart-swelling emotion. These characters are just so compelling, and the way Klune writes is profound in its simplicity. It’s one of the things that pulled me into Wolfsong (my first read by Klune), and it’s a talent I haven’t found in any other author.
Even in just a few chapters, Somewhere Beyond the Sea boasts the same humor and love that carried Cerulean. I have one single complaint: I desperately need more than an excerpt. I need this book now!
What!? I can’t believe this was only an excerpt. I guess I didn’t read the description clearly. I love these characters. I can’t wait for more.
It was so nice being reunited with these characters. I cannot wait for the full book to come out. TJ Klune’s writing style always sweeps me off my feet. Feeling very excited for what’s to come!
Arthur Parnassus, the romantic interest of Linus Baker and caretaker of Magical Youth, gets the spotlight in this sequel to "The House in the Cerulean Sea" by TJ Klune. In this excerpt, Arthur and Linus are once again caring for the Magical Youth that live on Marsyas Island while navigating their relationship, the discrimination of Magical Beings, and making sure the son of the devil isn't cracking the Earth open like an egg. The unconditional love Arthur shows to Linus and each of the children in this book can be felt through the writing and the way that each of the characters show love to one another.
This excerpt deserves its 5 out of 5 stars, I was entranced by each of the four chapters of this excerpt. Klune is an exceptional author who has the ability to make his characters jump off the page. The descriptions of the Island, the characters, and the emotions are immersive and approachable. It is easy to fall in love with this book, I found myself smiling the whole way through. I can't wait to read the full book when it comes out in September.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Tor/Forge for the opportunity of this excerpt for "Somewhere Beyond the Sea!"
An excerpt is always a tricky thing to submit for a review (and a tricky thing to review, by extension). Nevertheless, I will try my best. Brief as it may have been, this excerpt of TJ Klune's upcoming novel was its own short story. It picks up from the original in a way that doesn't feel too jarring, it provides a complete story, and it teases what's to come in the novel. I laughed at the delightful banter between Arthur and Linus, I cried with the heartfelt honesty of Sal and Lucy and the rest of the children, and I'm desperate for more. This review only feels partially complete, but I'm certain I'll enjoy the novel once it finally comes out. Until then, I'll be (im)patiently awating.
P.S: There is a tease for an upcoming antagonist that feels *very* familiar to a real-life figure. I'll keep my belief to myself for now, but IFKYK.
