Greater Secrets was a fun read! The text was easy to read, the graphics were well drawn and the story was propulsive
I feel like this book had a good plot but the actual story was lacking for it. I wasn’t too big of a fan of the artwork and I feel like the story just felt really incomplete at the end.
I don’t really get it. I’m not really sure what I just read. I want to know if she says yes or no but it didn’t tell me so I guess there will be a book 2? I don’t know. I wasn’t invested in this story, though. It was pretty boring. My face stayed in resting mode the entire time which is not good. When a book is really good, my facial expressions change throughout the book. I’ll smile, laugh, cry, etc. but this book made me feel nothing. I don’t understand what the point was even supposed to be. I do still want to know what’s up with the ending though and if there’s a second book I’ll have to see what happens next but it wasn’t great overall. 2.5 stars.
I liked the concept of the book but I think the ending fell very flat. I feel like there should've been more explanation on Amara and more of the reason she really went to find the light and if she ever really comes back from it
Thanks to NetGalley for this arc!
I'm honestly a bit confused? I loved the art style in this graphic novel and the magical elements, and the characters were established well. The setup was so good that I think I expected a little bit more from it? It ended so abruptly and I ended up sitting here, trying to figure out what happens next, where the story goes, why everything happened so fast. I honestly think it would've benefited from a longer story or a sequel.
Still enjoyed most of it. I was just left wanting more and not in a satisfying way.
that was kinda good, but I’m confused lol what does the ending mean??? what does the title mean??? felt like there could be few more extra pages to make the ending clearer.
i love found friendship between Maya, Cardea, and Dyno tho. and Maya being desi was also interesting. i just didn’t really understand the light beam & snake things.
I love the art in this graphic novel and the story has a really interesting premise. But for me, the plot didn't seem to develop fully and was quite slow until all the secrets were rushed to be revealed in the end. Most of the book takes place in a car with just three characters but I wasn't really attached to any of them, and although they seem to make connections, I wish I'd felt more emotion from them. I also felt that the dialogue was awkward and didn't flow as naturally as I'd hoped.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children's for the eARC in exchange for a review.
I loved how this story was about finding ones place in the world and living the life one wants for themselves and not living the life other people want you to. 10/10 read.
This book had a very interesting premise and I really enjoyed the characters and artstyle. It ended in a disappointing way, without answering a lot of big questions. I really hope there will be a sequel to explain everything.
Maya's family has always been able to see the light, but whether it's magic or a curse is determined by each individual. Maya's sister left to follow the light and it left her family disjointed. When one of Amara's biggest musical fans tracks down Maya and says she knows where to find Amaya, the two leave on an adventure joined by Dyno. Three strangers, traveling together, looking for Amaya. Each has their own secrets and each is taking the journey for a different reason.
Greater secrets has a good premise, but the plot lacked development. Each character seems thrown together on this trip with their secrets hastily revealed to wrap up the ending. Not a strong enough story for me to want to purchase it.
I liked the direction this story was heading in. I found the premise interesting and I think students always connect with found family friend tropes.
The story did feel disconnected and was confused a little bit. Near the end, I kept flipping back and forth wondering if I had skipped a page or missed some kind of information.
It seems like this will be a series, but I feel like more of it needed to be flushed out for the cliffhanger to feel worth it.
Really enjoyed this one! A nice adventure story with new friends and facing things you don't want to, but with more depth.
I decided to read this book because I was intrigued by the pillar of light and magical elements. Those parts were definitely prevalent in the book, but I wish there was more of a focus on that aspect. Instead, the book was more about friendships and familial relationships (which I did enjoy). I loved the graphics and the characters in this book! Will there be a second book? I was a little confused by the ending, but it’d make more sense if there’s a continuation.
I loved the artistic style of this graphic novel but I had a bit of a hard time following the characters' motivations and the abruptness of the ending threw me. It felt like there was a lot of backstory that was still missing from the story.
I will be purchasing it for my library, as I think my student will be drawn to the artwork and the story's concept.
The cover art is beautiful and the title is mysterious, which is drew me in to read this book. Unfortunately, the book did not deliver what I was expecting, nor did it hold my attention because of its uneven pacing and lack of stakes. The stakes are that the main character's older sister has been missing for years, and the family assumes that she ran away because of the family curse (seeing a light in the distance) and aren't worried about it. The younger sister is approached by her sisters fans (bc the older sister was a local rock legend) to go on a road trip to look for her.
I could see this book appealing to teen readers who like a reluctant main character going a quest (road trip) with new friends to find her sister. As an adult reader, I could not get invested in the story and I was very angry about how the book's ending.
