The Hair Dare tells of Mavis and Camille Marconi, identical twins who look exactly alike aside from their hair. As one sister seeks to win a Herbal Excellence model contest whose rule is “straight hair only”, the other makes it her mission to take them down. In this quick read, the sisters feud about boys, race, and “hairism” (texturism). The ending to this story felt a bit rushed and we were left with a very unexpected cliffhanger (is there a sequel?). I truly wish there was more so that story would’ve been more developed, as I think it could’ve been really great!
Thank you to NetGalley, Faith Knight, and Perry Harris Publishing for my ARC!
This book definitely shows the different ways people are viewed because of their hair and it will make me think about how our appearances can affect how people feel about us.
This was a funny ya novel centred on the friendship and rivalry between twins. One was an activist, fighting prejudice against black people and their appearance. The other had won a place in an ad campaign for hair products but had to conform to so called ‘’white’ standards of beauty to succeed. A really important principle is explored. People should be proud of their cultural heritage and deserve to get a similar level of recognition as anyone else, no matter what their ethnic origin. There is a nice HEA but with an allusion to a potential sequel. That would be good to see
