John’s wife Cameron finds crime pictures that link John to the notorious ‘Teacher Killer’. At first Cameron is shocked but soon considers John isn’t dead but is hiding from his crimes.

This story picks up where that story left off. Cameron thought she left all murders behind her when she moved to Tok, Alaska. But shortly after her move, more teachers are being killed. She is worried that her husband didn’t die.

The Last Hunt is the sequel to The Final Hunt by Audrey J. Cole and is as thrillery as you'd expect from this marvellous author. Secrets are buried and dug up. You can't throw a brick without hitting guilt. The pace is quick and snappy and the pages almost turn themselves.

Tok, Alaska, is the ideal setting for critters of all kinds, including humans and bears. The former are more dangerous than the latter and there are enough heartstopping chase scenes and goosebumps to go around. Dentist Cameron Prescott is starting her life anew with her state trooper boyfriend. Her serial killer ex-husband was discovered in a bear trap. Justice served? Then murder again happens with haunting echoes of the past. I was glued to my seat and tasted the fear of the chase.

This author is an automatic read for me, regardless of the synopsis. She has a knack for weaving suspense and mystery into every word. If you seek a super wilderness thriller with just enough grit to make it compelling yet not graphic, this has your name all over it.

My sincere thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for providing me with an early digital copy of this riveting novel.

I vowed never to make this mistake again - however I have once more fallen into the trap of reading a sequel without realizing its part of a series! Thankfully I think Last Hunt works just fine as a stand-alone however I will mention series elements further down.

Overall I would say the plot is fairly standard thriller, however with a quite pleasant (well pleasant from a enjoyable read POV) twist that the majority of the book is focussed on the MC and her experiences as a survivor, there are some police procedure type scenes but they mostly consistent of Detective Tanner eating gum and trying to talk on the phone while others interrupt him.

No the majority of the story is about Cameron, trying to balance the guilt of some her past actions, with the paranoia that her past might still be coming for her. Because I was unaware of the first book I genuinely thought that the author was trying something a bit different and placing their thriller story in the aftermath of a serial killer investigation - and strangely either way it works. I think readers of the first book might be a little more connected with Cameron, whereas as a new reader I was more sucked in by the complexities of her past and her life (and I confess to the point where for a moment or two I though 'gasp maybe she's the killer' a thought that wouldn't work if you knew this book was a sequel right?)

I liked that the book leaned more into the psychological than the action - the final scenes were I thought a little tropey but not disappointing. A good book. .

The Last Hunt by Audrey J Cole is book number two in the series, and I was thrilled to receive an ARC. Unfortunately, the copy that I downloaded is completely unreadable. This is beyond being a case of an 'uncorrected proof' and is almost as if it is written in another language. Based on the first book, which I loved, I am confident that this would be a five star read, so I have awarded it as such. I would love an opportunity to read this in the future.

Thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for granting my request for an ARC.

This was an amazing sequel! I enjoyed the story line and could not put it down. Audrey Cole is descriptive to the point you can almost believe you are actually there watching things unfold.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller!

This is a sequel to The Final Hunt. I am so happy there was a sequel because the first book left me wanting for me. Rarely do I enjoy the second book better than the first, but this is one of those times. I think it shows the growth of the author, but also I feel like this brought me the closure I was looking for after reading the first. While I'm left satisfied, I would never be upset about having more books in this series! I just love the setting of Alaska and the main character Cameron. She has such an interesting past.

I appreciated the recap of the first book scattered throughout to refresh my memory. It included enough details to remember specifics, without being repetitive. Although this is one of those rare instances where I remember the details of the first book which is saying a lot because I don't usually remember. Technically this could be read as a stand alone, but it will be more enjoyable if you read the first book of the series before. This is one series not to miss! It's full of wilderness, adventure, suspense and twists.

Thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am a fan of Audrey J. Cole books, and The Last Hunt does not disappoint. I was able to read this book in one sitting; I could not put it down.

Cameron Prescott hopes the past stays buried. After believing her murderous husband is finally dead, the fierce survivor longs to start over with her state trooper boyfriend. But her illusion of peace shatters when she hears of a fresh killing that resembles her late husband’s grisly signature.

Horrified to learn the evidence points to a member of law enforcement, Cameron questions how well she knows her new man. And as the lies and bodies pile up, Cameron is convinced she's being stalked by a killer.

I was able to determine who the culprit was, but it did not distract me from finishing the book or enjoying how it all came together. The storyline was good, the characters were likable and well-developed, the plot was intriguing, and the author did a great job of unraveling the mystery to hold my interest.

I would recommend this book and this author.

First of all, I hadn't read the first book, so I was a little hesitant if I would be able to understand this book, but this book was so well-written that there was nothing I felt missing. The character development, the plot twist, the locations, evidence, timing, everything made so much sense that I couldn't stop myself from flipping the page. On the whole, a great murder mystery.
Thankyou to Audrey J. Cole for such an amazing book and NetGalley for the opportunity to read the ARC. Hoping to read more!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC**

After her husband John goes missing while hunting, Cameron’s finds out he’s connected to the serial murders and find pictures to prove it. The whole world turns on her. She moves to Alaska and murder seems to follow her there.

The book is fast paced and was hard to put down. The story was interesting and had just enough twists to keep my attention. I enjoyed most of the characters and even though this is the second book in a series, it’s the first I read and I didn’t feel lost or lacking info. Perhaps more back story on Cameron would be nice so I’m looking forward to reading the first book.

While I enjoyed this book, many things were repetitive or just didn't line up. The main character is wiffle waffles back and forth so much.
I love the Alaskan town and wilderness setting.

Alone in a hunting cabin, off-grid in an untamed wilderness. How does a marriage come to this?

After John disappeared while hunting-presumed dead from a bear attack-Cameron found the crime photos. His role in the recent Seattle serial murders was discovered. The media destroyed her reputation. She lost her dental practice, is on the brink of losing her home.

Everyone has a secret. But if her husband could hide the unimaginable from her, who's to say he's truly dead?

Thank you Net Galley for this ARC. I do hope that future arcs are more e reader/mobile phone friendly that they are not set pages, but adjustable fonts.

I read the first book The Final Hunt back in 2022, and I had no idea that it was actually the first book of a series. I really enjoyed my time with this intense serial killer slash survival thriller, so I wasn't mad at all when this sequel popped up promising more time with Cameron and an Alaskan setting. And I have to say that this was exactly the type of fast-paced and dark thriller I was craving! At least one serial killer, a detective thriller vibe, a bout of bad weather, lots of action and intrigue along the way... The Last Hunt turned out to be the perfect thriller cocktail.

The Last Hunt can technically be read as a stand-alone, but I personally wouldn't recommend it as Cameron's character just doesn't have the same effect if you don't know everything she went through in the first book. Sure, there is some background given to help refresh memories, but the references will have so much more impact if you know what happened in the first book. This sequel has less survival scenes than the first book, although we do get a good dose of bad weather and a hostile Alaskan environment to enhance the experience. The setting makes for such a great backdrop for this story!

I don't want to give away too much and spoil the plot, but what I can say is that the development of the plot and twists are cleverly done. There are a couple suspects along the way, and while I did guess right who was behind it all, the other suspects were all still pretty plausible. What I particularly liked is how The Last Hunt is a perfect blend of different thriller subgenres, with for example Tanner giving us the typical detective thriller chapters and other POVs providing a serial killer, psychological or survival thriller vibe. The switches work really well and are helped by the multiple POV structure of the plot.

As for the characters... I liked some more than others, but this personally didn't hinder me at all because the main focus of The Last Hunt is without doubt on the plot and everything that is happening. It was still interesting to learn a bit more about the main characters in play, and it was surprisingly easy to root for some of them. The writing style and pace made it extremely easy to keep turning those pages, and I basically finished most of it in less than a day. And what a way to end the story with a bang! Those final chapters are intense indeed.

If you are looking for an engaging and suspenseful serial killer slash detective slash survival thriller series, I can recommend both The Final Hunt and The Last Hunt with my eyes closed. They might not be completely credible, but the books are without doubt extremely entertaining and real pageturners.

I really liked Audrey J. Cole's The Final Hunt and this sequel is also very good even though it was fairly easy to figure out the whodunit. I had to look back at The Final Hunt to remember the details of the story, so I wish Cole had given us reminders earlier instead of sprinkling them throughout the book, In The Final Hunt, Cameron Prescott learned that her "dead" husband John was a serial killer. Convinced that John had not really died, Cameron set off for Alaska to find him. At the end of the book, Cole leads us to believe that she left him for dead to be attacked by wolves near a remote cabin in the woods. But is John really dead? When two women are killed and it seems that there's a new serial killer on the loose, Cameron questions whether John could still be alive. Her new state trooper boyfriend Dane has been very secretive about his whereabouts and Cameron starts to worry that maybe she's gotten herself into a relationship with a serial killer once again. Cameron goes on an interesting and dangerous journey to get to the bottom of all of this. What a thrill ride this book was. There were lots of twists and turns. Quite a few surprises. I was totally engrossed in this tale. Cameron is such a strong character. I kept rooting for her throughout the book. Such amazing writing. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Excellent sequel, picking up where the previous story left off. Cameron thought her serial killer husband was dead, but when similar killings begin, she’s worried. Copycat or the real thing? Lots of room for thought and lots of action.

WOW! Audrey J. Cole’s latest, The Last Hunt, was an absolutely exhilarating sequel to The Final Hunt.

The book picks up right where the first one left off. Cameron thought she left all of the death and murders behind her when she moved to Tok, Alaska. But, shortly after her move, more people begin getting murdered and she thinks the past is repeating itself.

This book sucked me in just like I knew it would!! I could easily read at least 5 more books with these characters.

Thank you to Audrey J. Cole, NetGalley, and Rainier Publishing for this ARC. The Last Hunt will be on sale on June 25, 2024.

The Last Hunt by A.J. Cole, published by BooksGoSocial, is the second book in The Final Hunt Series. For best reading experience I recommend to read the books in order. The previous book is The Final Hunt. " After John disappeared while hunting—presumed dead from a bear attack—Cameron found the crime photos. His role in the recent Seattle serial murders was discovered. The media destroyed her reputation. She lost her dental practice, is on the brink of losing her home.
Everyone has a secret. But if her husband could hide the unimaginable from her, who’s to say he’s truly dead?
“What brings you so far from home?” the Alaska State Trooper had asked. The truth."
The story picks up where the previous bok was left off.
Cameron believes she's finally free from her late husband. But when new bodies show up it seems history reating itself.
A fast paced, complex, complicated read that had me in suspense till the last page. A story full of twists and unexpected turns that had me guessing till the last page.
Blurb:Tok, Alaska. Cameron Prescott hopes the past stays buried. After believing her murderous husband is finally dead, the fierce survivor longs to start over with her state trooper boyfriend. This was a very good book, I am not going to go into details, as I DETEST spoilers, but I read this in a day. There were some things I would change, but that it just personal preference.
