I loved the movie, and this comic adaptation really did a great job of translating that to the page. If you like the movie, this book is awesome!
My Neighbor Totoro Film Comic: All-in-One Edition by Hayao Miyazaki is a whimsical, heartwarming treasure that brings the beloved story to life in a new way. Miyazaki’s enchanting world is captured frame-by-frame, preserving every magical detail and gentle moment of wonder. This edition perfectly conveys the innocence and joy of Satsuki and Mei’s journey, with Totoro and friends adding a timeless charm that appeals to all ages. It’s an absolute delight, letting you step into a world where nature and imagination come alive—a must-have for any fan of Miyazaki’s timeless storytelling.
It’s very cute and basically like flipping through the movie! Great for collectors and coffee tables.
I really enjoyed the graphic novel version of Hayao Miyazaki's movie, My Neighbor Totoro. It stayed true to the film and the pictures were just as beautiful as the movie. Fans of Miyazaki's will appreciate the graphic novel version. There is one part where there is nudity and because of that, I do not think that schools could have in their libraries. The book, just like the movie has a sweet story.
Confession time, I have yet to see the movie My Friend Totoro. That's why I jumped at the chance to get this when I saw it being offered on NetGalley. I wanted to experience it in some way. (I currently do not own a TV, haven't for over a decade now. I haven't missed it much, other than when I want to see a movie, which isn't often. I rather read the book.)
I do love me some Studio Ghibli, Spirited Away is the best of all of the SG movie's I've seen thus far, but My Neighbor Totoro is one I have yet to see. If it is anything like the book, I can see why it is so popular and beloved by all who watch it.
The artwork is stunning, gentle, colorful and full of life, the characters are sweet and cute and real, so they aren't perfect, the storyline isn't the end of the world, it's just a small glimpse into the life of ordinary people, who have the opportunity to experience some extra-ordinary things.
If you like Studio Ghibli, you will like this. If you have not yet had the pleasure of being introduced to it, this book adaptation is not a bad way to do it. Though I do recommend watching one of the movies. I found that even though I didn't watch this particular movie, but since i am familiar with the flow and style of the movement of the movies, I felt like I was watching the movie and not reading the story on the page, it was that engrossing and magical for me.
Your mileage may vary, but this was fantastic for me and I can't wait to see the movie, one day.
5, I can't give anything less than that to this work of absolute art, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC of this book to read and review,
As expected, you get some of the greatest art to just look at out there (it's Miyazaki, what did you expect) and you get another reason to rewatch My Neighbor Totoro (not just one of the best Ghibli films, but just one of the greatest films ever). Truly just magnifcent.
My Neighbor Totoro is one of my favorite Miyazaki film and seeing it in comic form was a treat. Personally I love to see it but it's important to note that this is just the movie in comic strips not a new story. So if you just want a print out of the movie I'd highly recommend checking this out.
Thanks to NetGalley and VIZMedia for an advanced readers copy of this graphic novel.
My Neighbor Totoro is a beloved family favorite in our house and this graphic novel was spot-on. The comic book styling was easy to read and follow, the graphics true to the art of Miazaki. My nine-year old daughter loves all things Studio Ghibli and read through this quickly.
If you are looking for a printed version of the Ghibli film, this is it!
We spent a lot of time watching Ghibli movies when my children were little. Totoro was one of our favorites, so much so I have a Catbus tattoo. This comic hit all the same feels. I love the bright colors that took like you are watching the movie. It tells the story perfectly. I can't wait to get my own copy.
5 stars
It was fun to revisit this classic film by Hayao Miyazaki in a complete comic book form. I have seen this graphic novel in a serial format in the past, but I like this one a lot more in terms of helping the reader flow through this wonderful narrative. The way Miyazaki captures childhood wonder, imagination, the uncertainty that comes with a sick family member, community and the natural landscapes of Japan are just a few reasons I believe this story continues to inspire people around the globe.
Thank you to Viz Media and Netgalley for an opportunity to read this story in advanced in exchange for an honest review
5/5
This comic follows the exact same story as the classic movie and has the same beautiful artwork. Reading this was such an enjoyable and nostalgic feeling. Highly recommend to both people who have and haven't seen the movie. I hope they turn all the Studio Ghibli movies into comics!
Thank you NetGalley and RBMedia for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
If you are a Totoro fan, then this is for you because it takes the movie stills and turned it into an all-in-one comic. Just as beautiful and wonderful as the movie.
This graphic novel is comprised of screen shots from the film. The pros here are it gives you time to absorb the beautiful atmospheric qualities of the film at a slower pace. Cons are it doesn't quite have the magic of the film. I think this is a great introduction to the film and would be perfect for Studio Ghibli fans and anyone who may want to dictate the pace of their experience.
if you are a super fan of this movie this book is a must buy! so fun and such a cool way to bring you back into the world of this movie
This is essentially the film stills adapted to comic format, but that doesn’t make this any less wonderful. The full color makes this adaptation absolutely stunning. It’s been awhile since I’ve watched the film, so it made for a lovely refresher. This is a must for Studio Ghibli collectors and new fans alike.
I was really looking forward to this but... It's literally just a shot by shot of the film, the images are blurred, and there's nothing new. The speech bubbles just seem like they've been thrown over the top, rather than incorporated.
It's quite sad.
Thanks to NetGalley, the Publisher and Author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
"My Neighbor Totoro Film Comic: All-in-One Edition" by Hayao Miyazaki is a wonderful enchanting tale perfect for readers wanting whimsical adventures, nostalgic charm, the magic of childhood, a heartwarming story of sisterly love, resilience, and imagination.
The book is essentially film stills adapted into a comic format and the art is just as breathtaking as it is in the film. It is a fun exploration of the film through this comic adaptation, allowing a closer look to see more details one might miss while watching the movie.
Delightful.
100% the movie in a book.
The art is as gorgeous in print as it is on screen and I love that I can now consume this amazing story in another perfect format.

This film comic of "My Neighbor Totoro" is exactly how I remembered the movie. I recommend this comic for anyone who is in love with Studio Ghibli. This edition will be great to showcase on your shelf. As far as the story itself, "My Neighbor Totoro" is a heartwarming tale about family and sisterhood. Reading the comic version of the film made me focus on every scene, which in turn made me appreciate it more.
This is a loyal graphic novelization of the Studio Ghibli classic. The art and frames are pretty much the same. Just like the movie, the story is adorable and heartwarming.
However, some images are quite blurry.
