Rags and Bones was a fascinating collection of retellings. I liked that these short stories weren't just based on fairy tales but a wide variety of classic works of literature. However, many of the original tales were not written with children or teenagers in mind and many of these stories follow in the same vein.
Besides Gaiman's "The Sleeper and the Spindle" which has become a classic in its own right, I truly adored "New Chicago" by Kelley Armstrong, inspired by W. W. Jacob's The Monkey's Paw. I first read the original in elementary school and it stuck with me. Armstrong's version brings an epidemic plague type element that feels all too familiar post 2020. So much so that I think that New Chicago could be read along side The Monkey's Paw in schools today to help students understand the dangers of wishing.
The same thing could be said of Melissa Marr's story "Awakened, inspired by Kate Chopin's The Awakening. I read it in high school and loathed it and while Marr's story still follows the original tale's terrible plot, the addition of selkies helps soften the blow as well as let's women take control of an awful situation!
