Captain Liz Clark spent her youth dreaming of traveling the world by sailboat and surfing remote waves. When she was 22, she met a mentor who helped turn her desire into reality. Embarking on an adventure that most only fantasizes about, she set sail from Santa Barbara, California, as captain of her 40-foot sailboat, Swell headed south in search of surf, self, and the wonder and learning that lies beyond the unbroken horizon.
I love reading and watching surfing and love adventures she lived her dream this was a great book to read.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC book, I enjoyed this one.
Such an incredible story … i find that i need to dip into it a few pages at a time .. the same way i’ve read similar stories that pack so much into each moment. The journey is one I can’t even begin comprehending and is so powerful! I am in awe of Liz Clark! I started the year listening to the audio version of Jessica Watsons journey around the world so was completely fascinated by this story as well. Thankyou so much for documenting your adventure and sharing it here for all of us to share with you
First, thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book. I have been savoring it and talking about it to everyone I know--most especially my brother and nephew who are both avid sailors. I dabbled in racing sailboats decades ago, but since I'm in AZ, seldom ventured on to the ocean in my little boat, but I loved getting on board their larger boats and traveling down the California coast into Mexico. But you don't need to be a sailor or surfer to enjoy this book. It is SO much more than just her incredible adventure saiing over 20K miles over the course of 10 years. You'll learn a lot about how much work it is to undertake such a journey, but what I appreciate even more is her generous sharing of her journey of personal growth and her concerns and appreciation of the environment and the care native communities show for the world. The little things we don't even notice that really are so much more meaningful and important in our lives--if we desire a healthy and fulfilled life--than a job or success or money and things.
I'm already planning my Christmas gift list around this book. So much wisdom here and what an adventure! If you've longed to try something of this magnitude, but haven't had the resources, skills, or audacity to do it, you can travel with Liz and have the experience of your life sitting in a cozy chair at home.
This book was a really intriguing story about an amazing adventure! It was very well written with so many interesting details. A must read!
What an adventure she had. She was in school, working at a bar when she met a mentor that would encourage her to live her dreams, not only that he was willing to help get her going. She gained funds from family and friends and got moving on her goal, to sail around the world. It seemed simple, but as she worked through it the details were nearly overwhelming. She never quit, she may have crumpled a few times, but never quit and it got really hard. Being a woman, mostly alone in a world were men view women as less really scared me. She took chances that made me scream internally. How many times did she walk down these deserted roads in foreign countries with her surfboard ?! She was very lucky to have met so many kind open and loving people, there was a one truely craptastic one that left his mark. All this time alone gave her time to become more, to think more and she became a different person by the end of the book. The writing is rough, raw and honest.
I grew up much like the main character of this book. I sailed every weekend with my family to Catalina, I dove, I surfed, anything in the water. When I read the blurb I knew I would enjoy the story. She ended up doing what I only dreamed of and never had the guts to do. Bravo to this incredibly strong and brave soul. I would recommend this to anyone that loves the ocean, they who dream of true freedom with difficult choices. Be warned she is extremely open about everything, if you feel the need to control others this is not the book for you.
I loved this book by Liz Clark and would read a second book in a heartbeat!
I loved the content and the message. Her fascinating story of sailing from Santa Barbara California to the South Pacific is so interesting! Especially when she tells of the horrific storms at sea! It’s an amazing, emotional story that I really enjoyed reading. I couldn’t put it down!
