Kamielle was running from her past; a past that keeps catching up to her no matter where she goes or what she does. Her life is turned upside down when her neighbor attacks her and her friend's body is found in a dumpster behind the apartment complex.
Kamielle then has a run-in (literally) with an FBI agent Michael Carter. FBI Agent Michael Carter is in town following clues of a serial killer targeting prostitutes. Soon he is in charge of protecting Kamielle and entangled in her history or lack thereof. She is unwilling to give any information even if it is to help her from running from the past.
Michael begins to piece the clues together of the serial killer targeting prostitutes and how Kamielle's history and present situation may be intertwined.
Pro: Suspenseful, Mystery, Unexpecting Twist
Con: Some areas dragged on. Insert a portion of another novel involving Michael's Brother, Jon Carter.
I liked the book. What's not to like when CIA and FBI appear to protect a witness. And they are brothers. One woman on the run from her husband is hit by a FBI agent's car. That starts a relationship that is entertaining and romantic. The FBI safe house has a secret closet. How cool is that!! So many details make this story stand out. It's entertaining, kept me turning pages and a good ending. What more can you want in a book. How her husband keeps finding her is a mystery.
Outrunning the Hunter by Kyona Jiles is an action-packed thriller that will keep you turning page to the end. I enjoyed the plot and the characters, but I did not enjoy the graphic bedroom scenes. I feel that the story was strong enough that it did not need to add open-door sex. That is why I only gave this book 3 out of 5 rating. I received an advance reader copy of this book through NetGalley and I always review every book that I read. As I said, I felt that the plot was worth reading and the characters well well developed. I will not rehash the plot because it can be read in the synopsis. There is action, drama, and romance and other elements that make the book worth reading.
Kamielle was running away from a neighbour who was brutally sexually abusing her when Michael accidentally knocked her down with his car. Kamielle was on the run from her ex mob husband whom she had overheard planning to kill her after she has his baby. She had moved from state to state and avoided any attachments. Michael was FBI, he had a partner Tony and a famous brother in the CIA known for his ability to capture and kill. Quite the combination. Michael soon felt an attachment to Kamielle and was determined to protect her, although at the beginning she resisted strongly. Can anyone survive what Kamielle survived? You will certainly have to read it to find out. A combination of a romance and a thriller.
Romantic suspense is a subcategory of romance I'm usually fond of. So, when I had the opportunity to pre-read Outrunning the Hunter by Kyona Jiles, I happily grabbed the opportunity.
For a suspense novel to be thrilling, the main characters must be well structured. They must be three-dimensional and believable. Their fears and dreams need to become mine. When that happens, a book becomes really enthralling. Unfortunately, I missed that with Kamielle and Michael, the main characters. Kamielle was slender and a redheaded spitfire, a rather tiresome cliché. Michael is well-built, tall and beneath the hard-edged surface, in touch with his emotions. Both are gorgeous. But to me they never really come alive.
The thugs are super mean. One of them shoots his mistress's dog just to show how evil he is. The murders and torture are gory and the blood spurts, but I am never moved by either the killers or the victims. I think this again is due to the fact that the characterization is quite thin.
Something that enhances the atmosphere in a suspenseful story is the surroundings. Dark forests, bleak city streets, rainy beaches and so forth heightens the feeling of the story. They were almost completely missing. I've read a few other romance books published in 2023/2024 and minimal environmental descriptions seems to be a consistent theme. However, the dialogue feels alive. How Michael expresses himself one way when he talks to Kamielle and another way when he talks to his colleagues.
The idea behind the book is interesting. A woman on the run from her violent husband, that had been enough, now the author has thrown in a secondary plot with a serial killer. That, together with a rather tough and harsh language and many filler words, makes the story slightly messy. But if you want an easy-to-read, short book about how love can grow despite terrible circumstances, this is the book for you.
Tense and action packed, this one will keep you hooked, so clear your calendar and get snacks. More than a romance, more than escaping a violent mafia spouse, more than evading hitmen and psychotic murders, and more than evading a serial killer lurking in the shadows. Just more! Never a dull moment ...
If you love action, this is the type of book you want to get into. Great book, characters are very cool and love the concept.
A big thank you to NetGalley and BW Red for eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first in a new series. I have not read this author before. Kamielle just can't catch a break! ooh the run from an abusive mob husband, she gets hit by a car! Michael is with the FBI. There were a couple of things I didn't understand, like the money. Overall its a good read, although a bit violent. Kamielle spends a lot of time hurt. I would read this author again. I liked the characters. 4 stars
An exciting page turner. Interesting characters. It reminded me of the television show Criminal Minds. That was too intense for me so I quit watching it. This story was more violent than I usually read but I had to get to the possible happily ever after. I also want to read the next one in this series. It may be more than I can handle. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
Agent Micheal Carter is an FBI agent a la Raylan Givens of Justified with his cowboy boots and charm. Kamielle Johnson is a fiery red-head on the run from her mobster ex husband. Their worlds collide, literally.
I really wanted to like this book. MMC being a cop is a trope I love. Then up it to FBI agent, and get the mob involved, you have the makings for a suspenseful romance. However the writing is just too clunky for me. The dialogue is trying to get too much information across but that’s leads to sentences no one would ever say in real life. Like telling the cop,who put you in jail, how long he put you in there for.
I also felt uncomfortable with how Micheal was lusting after Kamielle while she’s injured and then thinking about her like that later to lust after her.
Michael Carter is with the FBI and is following up on a lead of a serial killer when he accidentally hits a woman running across the road with his car. That woman ends up being a woman on the run from her mob boss husband who killed her best friend as well as their unborn child.
This one was unfortunately a DNF for me. I just couldn't get into the writing or the characters.
