I’m not exaggerating when I say I’m obsessed with this book. The premise is entirely creative, the magical realism is fantastic, and the characters are so fully realized. I’m just sad it’s over!
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the chance to read the ARC of Sister Snake. I can’t wait to read anything Amanda Lee Koe writes next.
When I first came across this title I KNEW I had to get my hands on it and BOY was I spot on. This was WILD. Never have I related to being a snake until reading this?!?!?!!!
I know of The Legend of the White Snake, and found Sister Snake to be a seamless, fresh, and interesting spin of the classic Chinese legend in a modern day setting! There is a constant, palpable tension of this push/pull, deep love/deep difference of a thousand-year-old chosen sisterhood. I read this cover to cover in one sitting!
I thought the writing was super sharp, and reads as part satire, part humor, and part commentary on Singapore’s “official”LGBTQ+ attitudes and other socio-cultural perspectives. I’m really glad that a wide range of people and lifestyles are represented here! Parts of it had me CACKLING, and her portrayal of such fierce ties of love and friendship really moved me.
I am already hoping for a sequel!
I read this like two days ago but never reviewed it! I thought the multiple perspectives were a strong point and the writing was very good. Super quick even though i wish we got more of Emerald living in the city. There was a lot of talk about how rebellious and crazy she was and I get she was kind of toned down but would have liked at least a chapter focusing on that instead of recounting past behavior. I enjoyed this and thought it was super good, especially for someone who’s not into fantasty really at all. This was very litfic with fantastical elements vs fantasy though so i think that was a factor. Definitely recommend and am interested in whatever comes next from amanda lee koe
Wow. Words cannot describe how beautifully written this book is. I genuinely bonded so much with the two sisters it brought me to tears. Love is such an animalistic feeling but so human at the same time. This book is like nothing I have ever read and I am so grateful for it.
"Sister Snake" was quite the ride! I was unfamiliar with "The Legend of the White Snake" prior to reading this, but I really enjoyed the mythology of the story. Emerald and Su were fascinating characters to get to know, both in the present and past. Their complex, toxic, co-dependent relationship was easy to get tangled in. I enjoyed a lot of the side characters, especially Tik. I thought her struggles with gender and sexuality were very relatable and empathetic. The queer metaphors intertwined with "Sister Snake" was exactly my bread and butter. My only nitpick is that I wasn't the biggest fan of how this novel handled the omniscient, multiple point of views. It wasn't that terrible by any means, and given this is an ARC things are of course subject to change. However, I found things a bit hard to follow towards the end with the continuous jumping of perspectives.
