Thank you to Penguin Group for providing me with an eARC of this book.
This is a beautiful, but sad book. The story begins with Sprout. Sprout is a hen who wants to leave the coup and be a mother. She stops laying eggs and gets culled. She leaves the coup and meets a friendly mallard named Straggler and a barn of animals who show her prejudices and who ostracize her. She wants to belong, but is upsetting the dynamic of the barn. This story, told through the animals, teaches the cycles of animal life, friendship, belonging, and unconditional love.
This is a book I recommend and wish I'd read sooner.
