Part history (both of Betty Crocker and of popular recipes through the years) and part recipe compilation, this features recipes from Betty Crocker books, magazines, and related brands. Bisquick appears quite a bit. There are some interesting recipes, and perhaps there's an old family favorite, but many seem like things I don't see people cooking today, or maybe they just weren't my taste.
The recipes are in chapters on Holiday Celebrations, Memorable Main Dishes, Warm From The Oven Breads, Irresistible Cookies and Bars, and Better Than Ever Desserts. I did enjoy all the color photos and the recipe intros with info on their origins.
Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow Harvest for gifting me a digital ARC of this nostalgic cookbook. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!
When I got married in 1980, my sister-in-law gifted me a copy of the Betty Crocker Cookbook and even though I know longer have that husband, I still have the cookbook! This was such a trip to the past and I thoroughly enjoyed going through each page with my elderly mother, reminiscing about how things used to be. The recipes themselves are nostalgic and will probably remind you of childhood, and I anxiously bookmarked many pages. Even the page layout is perfect, looking like my old cookbook with its well-loved look and creased and stained pages. There are 5 chapters: Holiday Celebrations, Memorable Main Dishes, Warm from the Oven Breads, Irresistible Cookies & Bars, and Better than Ever Desserts. But there's also lots of stories and pictures from the past that just add to the fun of this cookbook!
BETTY CROCKER FOUND RECIPES contains "Beloved Vintage Recipes Worth Sharing." A few examples include Chocolate Chip Scones, Raspberry Almond Crepes, or Gumdrop Bread. The categories are Holiday Celebrations, Memorable Main Dishes, Warm from the Oven Breads, Irresistible Cookies and Bars, and Better than Ever Desserts. Each recipe has a brief accompanying vignette which identifies the time period (like 1950s Cheese Balls) and often includes consumer memory comments or even a photo of the recipe as originally published. Many recipes include photos of the food itself or of the ingredient packages (e.g., Bisquick) as they appeared in the past or even from cooking or research sessions at the Betty Crocker Kitchens. BETTY CROCKER FOUND RECIPES brought back so many wonderful memories, like my grandmother's delicious clover rolls (see Refrigerator Roll Dough) or my Mom's many baked treats (e.g., Salted Peanut Crisps). This is a terrific cookbook, filled with fun ideas to prepare and plenty of nostalgia, too. There are several pages about the history and evolution of Betty Crocker. For those still curious about how tastes have changed, The New York Times recently profiled "The 25 Most Influential Cookbooks From the Last 100 Years," including titles like The Joy of Cooking, The Moosewood Cookbook, Jubilee, and titles related to the cuisines of Mexico, India and more. ENJOY!
This felt like a blast from the past, thinking back to my childhood flipping through cookbooks and Betty Crocker magazines at the kitchen table. So many fun and nostalgic recipes to try. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Betty Crocker Cooky Book is basically a family heirloom for my fam so I was excited for this. Definitely excited to try quite a few of these recipes.
Betty Crocker Found Recipes, Beloved Recipes Worth Sharing, by Betty Crocker is a joyful trip down memory lane! I have followed and used Betty Crocker recipes since I was a young teenager. I have always loved to cook and using Betty’s recipes was and is a guarantee to success. I can’t even tally the amount of booklets and books that I own from Betty Crocker. When I saw this new book I was so excited to read it.
The book is broken down into Holiday Celebrations, Memorable Main Dishes, Warm from the Oven Breads, Irresistible Cookies and Bars, and Better than Ever Desserts. There are beautiful photos with most recipes. There is nostalgia on some of these pages bring back many fond memories. There are photos of recipes from the earlier cookbooks, photos from the Original Betty Crocker Test Kitchens, and pictures from magazine advertisements. I fondly remember ripping out the page of the magazine so I could save Betty’s new recipe. I learned about the Betty Crocker Radio Show which led to a national radio show called Betty Cocker Cooking School of the Air. Betty Crocker actually published a schedule so listeners could tune in for the recipes they wanted. There are so many delightful pieces of nostalgia from Betty’s 100 years of creating delicious recipes for the American Cook.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Once again they have delighted me and I have already bookmarked some of the first recipes I want to try. I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who has followed Betty through the years. It also would be a lovely book for those younger cooks who really didn’t know Betty. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
I would like to the author, William Morrow/Harvest and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
What a delightful cookbook! Full of fun, nostalgia-inducing recipes, and peeks into the world and history of Betty Crocker. Definitely one to have on your shelves! Big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
What is the story of Betty Crocker? Betty Crocker was created by the Washburn Crosby Company, a flour milling business, in 1921 as a way to personalize responses to consumer inquiries. The name "Betty" was chosen because it was seen as friendly and approachable, while "Crocker" honored a retired executive of the company, William Crocker. Over the years, Betty Crocker became a trusted brand and symbol of home cooking, despite being a fictional persona. Betty Crocker played a significant role in shaping American culinary culture by popularizing easy-to-make recipes and promoting home baking. Through cookbooks, radio shows, and television appearances, she became a household name, encouraging families to embrace home-cooked meals. Her influence extended beyond the kitchen, as she represented the ideal of the American homemaker and contributed to the development of modern convenience foods.
The Betty Crocker cookbook that I still use and reference today was given to me as a wedding gift in 1995. The recipes within this cookbook were enjoyable to sift through.
Loved this cookbook. Very nostalgic and enjoyable. The recipes are great and easy to follow. I have recommended this book to many patrons.
Absolutely love this Betty Crocker cookbook. So any fabulous and nostalgic recipes for every meal. I will definitely make lots of the recipes that are found throughout this book.
Growing up in a kosher household, the only Betty Crocker recipes that we made were the boxed brownies, cookies, and cake. Keeping kosher involves a lot of rules and food restrictions, so many of the Betty Crocker recipes I came across weren’t things I could ever make. Now that I’m the one who does all the cooking, I was curious about some of the most cherished vintage recipes. I have to admit that I was slightly concerned about seeing recipes involving gelatin molds that were so popular in bygone eras, but there was not a single gelatin mold or unusual combination in the entire book.
To start with, there was a lot more than simply recipes. One of my favorite parts of this book were the historical snippets that came along. Readers get to learn the origins of the Betty Crocker brand, how it has changed over time, and the ways that it has touched the lives of home cooks and aspiring cooks. I was so surprised to discover that for the majority of the time, Betty Crocker was responsible for more than simply cooking information and products. There was a radio show and columns in magazines or newspapers, where they offered practical tips for household chores or needs, as well as recipes and quick kitchen hacks before we knew them as life or kitchen hacks.
That being said, there are a ton of great recipes and tips throughout this book. It is broken up into intuitive chapters focusing on: Holiday celebrations, memorable main dishes, warm from the oven breads, irresistible cookies and bars, better than ever desserts, and closes out with a metric conversion chart and an index of recipes.
I was honestly expecting to discover a ton of cool sounding recipes yet only a few that I could make in my kosher kitchen, and probably only bookmarking the desserts. Boy, was I wrong! This book is full of bookmarks, and I am going to have to buy a hard copy of this so that I can keep the recipes handy. Probably half of the recipes are things that I can prepare and aren’t too far beyond my kitchen skills (I’m a lousy baker). Fortunately, I didn’t have to worry about my baking skills either. So many of these recipes either use familiar items (Bisquick is the one that comes to mind first), and allow me to get away with not having to roll dough because I can never figure out how to make it not too sticky or floury. The bread section was even more surprising to me, because now I have a bunch of breads that I can make at home without needing anything that isn’t easily on hand in my kitchen, and that I don’t have to work with the dough. Also, I discovered a couple of bread recipes that might be out of my comfort zone, but sound like I could make a decent (and edible) version of the recipe in the book.
Each recipe includes nutritional information, some tidbits on where the recipe had originally come from, and there are even a few where readers wrote in about a beloved lost recipe and Betty Crocker recreated it for them. There are a lot of photos of the recipes and while it is clear that it was prepared and photographed by professionals, the vast majority of the recipes themselves aren’t as the photos led me to believe. A lot of them come together quickly, and don’t involve any special ingredients or kitchenware. This is the perfect book for home cooks, aspiring home cooks, and people looking for some nostalgic recipes, and I can’t wait to make these recipes.
A great collection of Betty Crocker recipes. I liked seeing the old cookbook covers and ads and things. There are several recipes in this book that I’d like to try. Some of them look a little interesting.
Fun cookbook with beautiful full page photos and lots of delicious sounding, easy to make recipes. I’ve definitely earmarked a bunch to try for my family!
Great cookbook. Such wonderful photos of food, makes your mouth drool a little. This cookbook is also a history lesson on Betty Crocker. It's an interesting history. The ingredients are all pretty basic. You can never go wrong with a Betty Crocker cook book. Give this one a try. Thanks Netgalley and William Morrow for the opportunity to peruse this beautiful book.
Betty Crocker Found Recipes: A Nostalgic Journey into Classic American Cuisine
Hi there,
I recently received from NetGalley a copy of Betty Crocker "Found Recipes". It is a new cookbook to be released in November. The subtitle is Beloved Vintage Recipes Worth Sharing. And it is exactly that. It is a great cookbook filled with loads of "back in the day" recipes. It is a time capsule that captures the different food of past generations. In addition it offers a glimpse into the the evolution of home cooking.
The cookbook boasts an extensive range of recipes that cover appetizers, main courses, desserts, and everything in between. Whether you're in the mood for a comforting pot of Chicken à la King, an all-American Tuna Melt, , or the timeless Classic Yellow Cake, this collection has something to cater to a wide array of tastes and occasions.
One of the hallmarks of the Betty Crocker brand is its dedication to making home cooking accessible to everyone, regardless of their culinary skill level. The Found Recipes continue in this tradition, featuring clear, step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow. The ingredient lists are straightforward and usually composed of items you're likely to have in your pantry or can easily find at the grocery store.
Betty Crocker Found Recipes is charmingly retro, with design elements that hark back to mid-century American kitchens. The photography, while nostalgic, does not compromise on modern standards – each dish is presented in a way that is both appetizing and authentic.
The recipes included are not just relics of the past but are adapted to suit the modern kitchen. They respect traditional methods while also offering suggestions for updated techniques and ingredient substitutions to meet contemporary dietary preferences and constraints. Lately, I have found that Tuna Melt seems to be having a moment. It is popping up on social media and in restaurants. I took the Tuna Melt recipe found in this cookbook and used it to create a more contemporary version.
Betty Crocker Found Recipes is a delightful addition to any kitchen library. It manages to balance nostalgia with practicality, ensuring that these timeless dishes can be enjoyed by new generations. Whether you're an experienced cook or a novice looking to delve into classic American cuisine, this cookbook provides a wealth of inspiration and reliable recipes.
This is a nostalgic, yummy book. If you're looking to dip into your feels this autumn I would recommend. This book is nostalgic American fun and will remind you of your grandmothers.
Betty Crocker Found Recipes by Betty Crocker is such a great book and like a trip down memory lane. From the lemon bars my mom made because they were my dad‘s favorite until her dying day to the Beef Wellington I remember as a little girl her being so proud she made right. The red and white checkered Betty Crocker cookbook with something that marks my childhood and growing up in the mini recipes with in it all part of the happy memories my mom made from great desserts to entrées to salads I would be lying if I said Betty Crocker wasn’t a part of my upbringing and are now family traditional recipes we cook daily so instead of a review I want to make this a thank you to Betty Crocker for feeding my childhood memories and helping my mom be the great cook she was. I love this book and definitely recommend it and hope it marks others lives in such a positive way like it did my own and my sisters.#NetGalley,#William Morrow, #BettyCrockerFoundRecipes, #BettyCrocker,
I really enjoyed this cook book because of the nostalgia it brought back to me. My family has been super excited about some of these recipes that were long forgotten coming back into our lives. I will be recommending this book to everyone I know.
Betty Crocker Found Recipes is a fun selection of “lost” recipes. Home cooks will enjoy trying vintage recipes beyond the standards.
