A wonderful recipe book that has recipes seldom found in todays recipe books. Unique. Traditional. The Hush Puppy Fried Chicken was a hit. If you collect recipe books, you'll want to add this to your collection!
Betty Crocker Found Recipes, is a fun collection of recipes throughout the history of Betty Crocker, including Found Recipes (recipes requested by readers from their past), favorites of the Betty Crocker Test Kitchens, and re-created lost recipes. The chapters listed are:
Holiday Celebrations
Memorable Main Dishes
Warm from the Oven Breads
Irresistible Cookies and Bars
Better Than Ever Desserts
I recognized a handful of these recipes, such as the "Impossibly Easy" ones that use Bisquick, but the majority of them were pretty new to me. I have about 2 dozen recipes bookmarked to try, some with a creative twist to them, like Eggnog-Poppy Seed Bread, Hush Puppy-Fried Chicken, Parmesan "Chicken-Fried" Steak, and lots of desserts.
I rated Betty Crocker Found Recipes 4/5 stars. The recipes collected here are reliably good, simple to prepare, don't use any hard-to-find ingredients, and were generally picky-eater friendly, which is typical for the Betty Crocker line of cookbooks. Another plus is that most recipes had a photo to go with them.
Thank you to NetGalley, Betty Crocker, and William Morrow for the opportunity to read the ARC of this book. A review was not required, and all opinions expressed are my own.
This new version was so nostalgic for me. I have my grandma’s copy, my mom’s copy, and now my grandma-in-laws copy of this traditional cookbook. I have so many copies of this beloved cookbook and they are all different! It was wonderful to read through this new version and see all of the fun facts and tidbits. The photos were great and the layout was fantastic. I read this in e-book format and will definitely be buying the physical copy to add to my collection! My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Beautiful photos. Easy to intermediate recipes. Information I didn't know. This gives you a true look at our history and I loved it. It also gave me ideas to get us out of the menu planning rut we've been in. Even I’m tired of the same old meals!

A collection of recipes from decades past
I remember some of these from my younger days. I would make some of them today for myself. There are nice pictures and history of dishes included. A touch of nostalgia
I requested and received a NetGalley Arc to peruse gratis and offer my opinion in the same
It was interesting reading about the story of Betty Crocker, seeing the different pictures of she would look like and go through old recipes. These recipes remind me of Meemaw and the lets say interesting recipes she makes using canned food and some funny combinations. The recipes look good but I didn’t find a lot that I would actually make so maybe this book isn’t for me, but I’m pretty sure my Meemaw would love it. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
Nostalgic recipes, good photographs, and some hidden gems will make this a great cookbook to give as a gift or keep for reference. I really enjoyed looking through the notes from readers asking about a recipe they remembered. Sometimes their notes sparked a memory for me, and I became even more invested to see what the publishers would pull from the archives. All in all, this is a good collection of familiar and unique meals and desserts.
This was a really fun book. There were a lot of fun and unique recipes. I love the vintage recipes and the vintage feel of this book. I really enjoyed the intro to each recipe. It gave great insight to the recipe and what to expect. The photos were great and made the food look very appetizing. The recipe selection was great. Though they recipes were different they were still the type of food many people would enjoy with easy to find ingredients. I would definitely recommend this book especially to those who love vintage recipes. I think this would also make a great gift.
This cookbook is delightful! It was like stumbling upon a treasured collection of my great-grandma’s recipes. Backed by the quality you know and love from Betty Crocker, you can’t go wrong with any of the recipes in this collection. The recipes have been updated for present day ingredients and are easy to follow. Some of the standouts for me include the pineapple cheese ball, creamy tropical fruit salad, peppered beef roast, and chicken barley stew with cheddar dumplings. Thanks to #NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to review an ARC.
I have been following Betty Crocker recipes for decades. The first cookbook I ever used was Betty Crocker and I know that when I see a recipe from Betty, I can trust the process and results. So, when I saw a new cookbook that I have not tried before, I was instantly curious. What drew me was the notion of rare and lost and found recipes. With countless options available to me online, I wanted to see what the fuss was about. There is a wide variety of recipes here. Meals, sides, breads, desserts, holiday, and every day. I cannot say there is a singular recipe that makes you want to stand up and shout, but rather, these recipes are like a hug from long days ago. Tradition, nostalgia, and rhythms are what came to mind as I read through this. I adored all the retro paraphernalia inserted throughout. Genuine recipe pages, articles, adds, and historical memoires reminded me that despite how sophisticated we are in the kitchen today, there are just some creations in the kitchen that are timeless. Whether you are looking for something new or old, I think you will find something valuable and delicious in this collection.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
This was a fun, informative cookbook. I enjoyed reading about some of the history of Betty Crocker.
There is a nice mix of recipes included in the book's different sections. Many of them, but not all, have photos included of finished products. There are also several throwback photos and articles interspersed among the recipes. I would definitely think of purchasing this cookbook for myself or as a gift. I have book marked several of these recipes to try.
As is usual in Betty Crocker recipes, the ingredients are pretty common and the directions are easy to understand and follow.
Many sincere thanks to William Morrow Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I think this book was fun but I wasn’t smitten with it. If you are looking to reminisce with an older time and generation then this is your book! If you’re looking for new recipes to try, not so much. There isn’t anything beyond stories and pictures of times past and old recipes that I couldn’t get from my vintage Betty Crocker recipe books already in my collection. For me this is less a recipe book and more of a look geek.
To be expected this was a great cookbook. It was very interesting to read about the history behind Betty Crocker and her progression through time. A perfect gift for any homemaker or nostalgic hostess. I love all the classic recipes and the unique them of the book. A lot of great images and recipes, would very much recommend. I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Nice cookbook. So many old favorites. . I will make some of these for sure! Some good twists on some old favorites.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Betty Crocker Found Recipes by Betty Crocker.
I was surprised to find out that Betty Crocker is not a real person. It was fun to see all of the old-time recipes put in one book. Loved seeing all of the pictures from past advertisements. It was interesting that there was a radio show. It is crazy to think that Betty Crocker would receive over 5,000 letters a day and that they employed people to respond to the questions and inquires. There are a lot of recipes I am hesitant to try. Not sure about a zucchini/banana/chocolate chip cake with peanut butter frosting...sounds like a lot of flavors. I like that there are added tips in the beginning regarding ingredients and types of pans used. I can't wait to try the Pink Peppermint Pie.
I love that they brought a bunch of recipes throughout the years and made one book.
Ahhhhh! I am so happy to have this in my hands. I absolutely cherish my late grandmother's original Betty Crocker cookbook, and now to get to have one of my very own that pays homage to some of the most beloved vintage recipes of their time is a BLESSING. I am so thankful to Harvest Books, Netgalley, and Betty Crocker for granting me advanced access to this collection before November 26, 2024.
Thanks to NetGalley and Harvest Books for the complimentary ebook. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If it weren’t for Betty Crocker, I would have starved growing up. No, seriously. Before I got married, I asked my mom for all my childhood favorite recipes. It was a long process of writing them all down (and creating a family cookbook), but the one thing that struck me as I quizzed Mom where to find a recipe was the answer “Betty Crocker’s XX cookbook”. Mom collected cookbooks and never got rid of any, including her well-loved 1950 edition.
The recipes in this book are an interesting collection. I didn’t read every recipe, but I did notice that the 1990s recipes were heavily featured, so I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping for more recipes from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, the recipes I grew up with. But I get it: Millennials would be the target audience for this book, forget about Gen X (as usual). I personally didn’t find any particular recipe that I would want to try, although I do think the inclusion of nutritional information for these “lost” recipes was a great addition.
Betty Crocker Found Recipes has an abundance of recipes to satisfy any baker. This would be a wonderful addition to any baker's recipe collection.
I am a fan of Betty Crocker - cake mixes are a staple when I don't have time for doing something from scratch and I like to think I invented the Dunkaroo when we used to grab a can of icing and some graham crackers to take as a movie snack in the 80s with my friends - so picking up a book of found recipes was fun. I expected to see some of the classics from way back in the day like cheese balls and Goddess dip, and I wasn't disappointed. There were also some great more recent recipes or at least recipes that would stand the test of time and not simply be nostalgic memories.
I appreciated that there was history and a story behind the way the book evolves and the recipes were chosen. And I have already tried a few and found them to be successes. My kids adored the orange honey muffins, and I have been searching for a gumdrop cake for many years that replicated the one my grandmother used to make when I was little.
All in all, there is a good variety of recipes here and they are easy to follow with (mostly) items you'd have close to hand or be able to find at most grocery stores. At least, those in the US and Canada which is what I'm most familiar with.
Looking forward to testing a few more and will probably pick this up when it comes out either for me or for gifting. Or both.
Lost a favorite recipe you discovered years ago? Maybe its in here!
It goes without saying that the folks at Betty Crocker have a few recipes in their possession….after all, they have been printing cookbooks, cooking magazines, and more for a long, long time. The premise of this collection is simple….people have contacted them over the years, hoping that Betty Crocker can help them find a recipe (maybe a Betty Crocker original, maybe not) that they remember having enjoyed once upon a time or that has mysteriously gone missing from their own collection. This cookbook is a combination of those requests, what Betty Crocker was able to uncover and./or recreate….and is a cross-section of types of foods and decades of origin. Sweet and sour meatballs? Check. Recipes using Bisquick? Got you covered. But alongside recipes that I remember from my parents’ or grandparents’ parties back in the day, there are also things of more recent vintage….Ravioli with Roasted Red Pepper Cream, for example. The first recipe I tried out was for Impossibly Easy Chicken Parmigiana Pie, using some leftover chopped chicken breast, pasta sauce and cottage cheese with a Bisquick-based crust (I needed to throw dinner together quickly, realized I had the ingredients on hand….perfect!) and my picky teen daughter and less-than-adventurous husband both approved….not a bit left over for the following day. There is a recipe for a glazed lemon loaf that looks like one that a friend’s mother who is no longer with us used to make….that is on the list to try next. One thing is for sure, you can always trust that a Betty Crocker-approved recipe will work out well, that the directions will be clear, and that the ingredients will (mostly) be things you regularly have on hand or can readily find. I had a lot of fun thumbing through the book, reading the backstory of where the sleuths found the requested recipe or what they did to tweak and/or recreate those they couldn’t find. I have a few more recipes, throwbacks or infringing new ideas, to pop into my own recipe files…..and I suspect other cooks will find the same. Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow/Harvest for allowing me access to an early copy of this cookbook…..and my family thanks you too!
