An amazingly imaginative series. East of West is set in a perfectly stylised world of western and sci-fi tropes, populated with reimagined canonised and mythical beings. The stakes are always high and someone is usually scheming, but most importantly it always reads beautifully.
This was one of my attempts at getting in to graphic novels. I loved the colour saturation of the work, and the storyline was good. But I just can't read the damn things. No reflection on the work.
Ok, so this is set in a dystopian future that plays out as if the Civil War had been settled by the Union and the Confederacy staying separate. Sometime during the time just after the war, two men (one white, one Native American) received a prophecy which foretold the end of times... but they both dropped dead before getting to the last bit... which was received decades later by Chairman Mao.
Jump to 2064. The USA is now known as The Seven Nations: The Union (AKA the White Tower), the Confederacy (AKA the Dark Towers), the Deadlands (a sort of neutral zone where a cataclysmic event once took place), The Republic of Texas, The Kingdom of Louisiana, The Endless Nation (where the Native Americans now live) and the People's Republic (a sort of American China located somewhere in the San Francisco Bay area). The representatives of these lands are known as The Chosen and they believe it is their job to make the prophecy come true.
Enter the four horsemen of the Apocalypse... except there are only 3 of them (War, Famine and Conquest) and they are kids... because somehow their adult selves were all killed and they had to go back to kid form.... Death is not with them because he is mad. Because they killed his wife.
Are you confused yet????
Actually, it's a lot less confusing than it sounds, and it makes for a hell of an interesting read with lots of awesome violence and gorgeous artwork that reminded me a lot of American Vampire. I am definitely intrigued, and want to keep reading!
