Thank you so much to netgalley and Kensington for the arc of this one in exchange for an honest review!
This book is the third in a cozy mystery series. Sissy is a twenty something who is a columnist and she also helps her aunt at her cafe. When someone ends up dead, she tries to solve the case.
I liked this book! I think the characters are fun to follow and the mystery was interesting. It kept me interested throughout. I also love the small town feeling and the cute cafe.
I need to read more from this series! I love the covers and the cute titles.
A Murder for the Sages by Amy Lillard
A Sunflower Café Mystery #3
Twenty-something advice columnist and amateur sleuth Sissy Yoder loves helping out at her Aunt Bethel’s Sunflower Café in Yoder, Kansas. It connects her to family, to the close-knit community—and to the suspicious events that always seem to bubble beneath small-town life . . . The unusual death of local herb farmer, Ginger Reed, is the talk of Yoder. Naturally, Sissy is intrigued. The official report classifies Ginger’s demise as an accident, concluding that she ran herself over with a tractor. But Sissy’s cousin, Naomi, a friend and longtime employee of Ginger’s, insists that’s impossible. When she asks for Sissy’s help in unearthing the truth, Sissy’s on the case—accompanied as ever by her loyal Yorkie companion, Duke . . . The deeper Sissy digs, the longer the list of suspects grows—and none of them are Ginger. Near the top is Ginger’s resentful sister-in-law, Mallory. Next is Naomi’s brother, Lloyd, who’s bitter about the oil derrick presumably pumping black gold from Ginger’s land—land that once belonged to his family. Naomi herself could be a suspect—it’s her tractor, after all. But the investigation stalls when Naomi makes a shocking turnaround in her story. Is she lying? And if so, why? Then a missing dog, a desperate lawyer, and a teenage con artist are added to the mix, and the puzzle becomes hopelessly complicated. If Sissy doesn’t solve it quickly, she’ll be lost in the weeds as a killer reaps a deadly harvest . . .
this is aka Aunt Bess Sissy Yoder's story.
this is Gavin Wainwright's story.
this is Aunt Bethel’s story. She own the Sunflower Café in Yoder, Kansas.
this is Ginger Reed's story. local herb farmers.
Sissy has been helping her Aunt Bethel at the Sunflower Café.
Or, as Sissy Yoder liked to say, extremely unlikely. But she was not about to jump into this conversation. After months of living in the small, unincorporated community, she was still an outsider. She had a feeling she might always be. At least, for as long as she stayed there. Which was something that was yet to be determined. She took the fresh pot of coffee from the waitress station and started making her way through the small dining area, listening to the talk as she did.
This book can be read as a standalone for those who are new to the series.
A good mystery.
I recommend reading.
A Murder for the Sages by Amy Lillard is a 4 star book
I am looking forward to reading more books by Amy Lillard.
I received a complimentary copy of the book and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions are my own.
This is the third release in the series. I have read and enjoyed the previous books in series. We return to Yoder Kansas and our protagnist Sissy who works at her Aunt;s small cafe that is a hub for gossip. Sissy and the local s are trying to solve a murder of a local farmer that the police have decided was not murder. Sissy puts her investigation hat on soon finds red herrings and clues that start to lead to murder.
I enjoy this series for the look at small town Kansas and the interesting characters.. Sissy is a smart protagnist often held back by her circumstance and has growth in each book. A enjoyable addition to the series.
Thank you to Net Galley, the publisher and to the author for the opportunity.
This was a cute mystery by the author. The book brings back characters from the first two books in the series. So it would be good to read the previous books. It brings back Sissy Yoder and her friends as the amateur detectives, all being certain that Ginger did not just have an accident. Someone did this to her! It’s a fun "who-dun-it and the members of the town are all interesting characters which add to the storyline. The storyline was maybe a bit slow for me. I really liked Aunt Bess' quotations at the beginning of the chapters, especially the kidney stone one. I can relate!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another interesting journey to Yoder, Kansas with Sissy and her adorable Yorkie Duke. She is starting to feel like she belongs here in spite of being right in the middle of two former murders and now a new one. The talk of the town is the death of herb farmer Ginger Reed. The initial belief is that her death is accidental. But talk and rumors abound and public opinion is divided. How could she possibly fall off a tractor and run it over herself? Suspects begin to multiply as the days go by. I was also interested in the friendship between Gavin and Sissy. Were they merely best friends or was something else brewing? Multiple other things were going on that certainly kept the story lively. The characters were fun and interesting, some of which I’d met before and enjoyed visiting with again. This is a cozy murder mystery that I throughly enjoyed. I received an ebook copy of this novel from the publisher through Netgalley but was not required to write a review.
So I decided to go off track and try a different type of mystery sub-genre and Murder For The Sages is exactly what you would expect from a cosy mystery. Amateur sleuthing, quirky characters, a small community where gossip and rumours travel fast, and of course, a cute dog sidekick.
This is a lot slower than my usual thriller reads, but it was still a fun novel. I especially enjoyed Sissy's 'Aunt Bess' stereotypical advice column quotes at the start of each chapter (Unfortunately, the best way out of a difficult situation is through it; Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you do nothing but sit there; This too shall pass. It might pass like a kidney stone, but it will pass;)
This would be a great read for anyone who loves amateur sleuth mysteries with a bit of romance on the side.
Welcome back to Yoder, KS. Sissy Yoder and the quirky characters of Yoder, KS are "talking" about how herb farmer Ginger Reed was killed by running herself over with a tractor. I mean that is usual right? Well Sissy and crew think there may be more to the story. While this is a part of a series, Amy Lillard writes each so they can be read as a standalone. As Sissy and Gavin and little Duke delve deeper into the mystery, things don't add up. Will Sissy be able to clear Naomi's name and find out just how Ginger could have run herself over? I look forward to a next adventure in Yoder. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.
A Murder For The Sages ( A Sunflower Cafe Mystery #3 )

This is a great mystery from the series A Sunflower Cafe book three. A local herb farmer had a terrible accident, or was it murder? Sissy Yoder is having a hard time believing it was an accident. Sissy is also keeping a secret from everyone. Will she and Gavin, her friend, find out the real truth behind the accident or murder? A wonderful mystery, quirky characters, and a secret identity, that will have you trying to read faster to find out the answers. I was given a complimentary of this book by NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
A Murder for the Sages is the third book in the Sunflower Café Mystery series, written by Amy Lillard. It is enjoyable to be reacquainted with previous characters but the book can easily be read as a stand-alone. Books that are filled with a community of friends and neighbors who seem to know everyone else's business are such fun to read and this one does not disappoint. Sissy has been in Yoder, Kansas, helping her Aunt Bethel at the Sunflower Café and once again a dead body shows up and the mystery begins. The author kept me guessing as to the culprit right to the end. Readers who enjoy amateur sleuth mysteries and a bit of romance will want to be sure to read A Murder for the sages. I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a positive review. The opinions are my own.
Another page turner read in this series. We are back in Yoder, with Sissy Yoder, aka Aunt Bess.
There are recurring characters in this read, but they can be read alone.
You might be laughing out loud, but there is a serious side here, and a murder. Oh dear, these murders seem to follow Sissy around.
I love that Sissy has so much family here, but oh dear her Mom can be so over baring. Is there a love interest, or two? Have fun at the family dinners!
Also enjoy the grape vine at the Sunflower Cafe, and more than one is the suspect in the tractor run over death, and everyone seems to have a suspect!
I enjoyed this read, from beginning to end, and now I'm hoping for more!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.
A great "who done it?" mystery that kept me guessing until the end. With quirky characters, a secret identity, a unique murder, and more, this story had me wondering what would happen next. I enjoyed this one. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required
A Murder for the Sages is another enjoyable book in the Sissy Yoder series. A local her.b farmer is murdered and one of Sissy’s cousins is caught in the middle. Sissy and Gavin begin to investigate, finding all sorts of odd things happening in Yoder. I really liked the ending and the hint of the next mystery.
"A Murder for the Sages (A Sunflower Café Mystery #3)" by Amy Lillard is a touch of Amish cozy mystery and a touch of writer cozy mystery in a tiny house. This one revolves around a tractor "accident" that Sissy doesn't believe is an accident. She and Gavin do some digging to find out what really happened. Really, it felt like it resolved purely because the culprit got ahead of themself when and thought they knew more than they did, revealing themself.
My main complaint with this book was the excessive repetition of phrases, words and some information. I get it, some people talk like that or think like that but it was to the point it just felt like filler rather than a character trait. It actually got a bit annoying, especially after the 6th time of hearing why Sissy works at the Sunflower Café.
“Don’t kick the tires if the donkey is free.
Lol too funny. I've never heard this saying before. Probably because it's Amish.
This book y'all. I grinned at the citizens of Yoder as they tried to guess what and why about happened to Ginger.
I was happy to see Sissy and her Aunt Beulah back for another mystery. They are quite the sleuthers.
The author has done quite a wonderful job with the mystery part. A couple of twists I didn't see coming. Which is why I enjoyed it so much.
Still can't stand Earl Berry.
5 stars for a well written story. I highly recommend!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
What a cute book! Looking forward to the rest of the series. Love a good cozy mystery. Definitely recommend
What a cute series! Looking forward to the future books by this author. I love the cover/title as well
When Sissy and her friends and family start trying to find out what happened to a neighbor lady who died by being run over by a tractor, things get complicated. Lots of red herrings and yet a good pathway to lead the reader to the clues. Fun read and would highly recommend.
Sissy Yoder is back in this newest addition to the series.
When a local herb farmer is killed, everyone believes it was an accident, I mean, it's typical to run yourself over with a tractor, right?!
Sissy knows this was no accident, so she does her best to dig up the truth.
I really liked this book, the mystery was solid and the other characters truly make this a very enjoyable book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
