The main character attempts to end her short term affair, only to find out he will go to a series of extremes to keep her tethered to him. There were so many little twists and turns in this one that I was riveted every time I picked it up.
The characters had just the right amount of craziness mixed in with their antics. The huge twists toward the end were fun too. I had a feeling about one of them and ended up being correct, but I was totally blindsided by the other one.
A thrilling psychological thriller, with little spice and no gore! Highly recommend.
This was a bit disappointing, this is the first of this author that I had to DNF. I will be sure to give this author another try as I have enjoyed her previous work.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an opportunity to read this book.
2/5
I have read Lisa Jackson for years, I adore her Regan/Pescolli series and her books co-written with Nancy Bush. With all that said, I started this expecting to breeze through it and love it. I did breeze through it but boy, it was very different to the normal dynamic Jackson writes. The FMC Brooke lost me early on when she mentions the way Gideon left the bracelet for her after their first meeting. Major red flag, yet it intrigues her. TSTL!!! I didn’t like any of the characters to be honest, even Marilee was so moody and annoying.
The writing keeps you wanting to read, even as you actively hate everyone. It was also a little predictable.
Our Little Secret by Lisa Jackson quickly sucked me in from the first chapter, so I had high hopes for this one. I had read this author previously, and enjoyed her books. I wish I could say I felt the same by the time I reached the end of the story.
Brooke is a married woman who is going through a tough time in her marriage and makes a poor decision which leads to an affair. When she tries to end it, the guy doesn’t take the news well and basically tells her “ sorry, not happening” he wants to continue seeing her. He isn’t going to let her go easy.
Along with this storyline we have a couple girls gone missing from,Brooke’s daughter Marilee’s high school. We also have the main characters sister come to visit, although their relationship is strained at best. There is a lot going on in this plot.
All the characters are insufferable. There are some twisty moments, some suspense. Enough to keep me engaged. The potential was there but, between the annoying characters, and the predictable rushed ending, I just didn’t care by the end of it. Would I read another Lisa Jackson book? Yes. I just don’t think this is one of her best.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read an early copy.
Our Little Secret by Lisa Jackson
Evil
Obsession
Lies
Stupid Choices
Adultery
Promises Broken
Dysfunctional Family
And more such words came to mind as I read this book
This was a story that wasn’t easy to read, was populated with characters I never warmed to, was a bit predictable, and reminiscent of Fatal Attraction with genders reversed. It was not my favorite book by this author but an okay read in the end.
I wanted to shake Brooke for her many poor choices, send her sister Leah to outer space, put husband Neal in the doghouse tied to a chain, and daughter Marilee was over the top annoying and worse than my children were as teens or most other teens I have known. The plot was “okay” but not riveting. Brooke had many TSTL (too stupid to live) moments. And, as mentioned before, did not like any of the main characters and am not sure that any will prove redeemable in the long run.
Did I enjoy this book? Sort of
Would I read more by this author? Yes, if the synopsis appeals
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington books – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
"Our Little Secret" by Lisa Jackson did not disappoint. As a seasoned reader of Jackson's work, I was eager to dive into this latest offering, and it delivered the engaging experience I've come to expect from her.
The story centers around a couple whose marriage is on the rocks, with both partners having made poor choices that strain their relationship. Jackson deftly explores how these choices unfold, creating a narrative filled with twists and turns that kept me eagerly flipping pages to see how everything would resolve.
While there was a bit of a surprise towards the end, I found that for the most part, I could form my own conclusions as the story progressed. This did not detract from my enjoyment; rather, it made the journey through the book satisfying as my predictions played out.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed "Our Little Secret" and look forward to more works from Lisa Jackson. A special thank you to NetGalley for providing an ARC copy of this book. It was a pleasure to read, and I'm excited to see what Jackson has in store for her readers next.
I enjoyed this twist on the classic. Really kind of hated every character except for the daughter. Both parents weren’t great but it definitely kept me guessing at several points in the story. I enjoyed the ending and epilogue. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC
"Our Little Secret" was my first Lisa Jackson book, and I have mixed feelings. This was a solid premise, but it has been done so many times before, that it really needs to be terrific in order to stand out. And this was....long. And drawn out....easily 100 pages could have been chopped out without sacrificing the plot. Terrific it was not. Entertaining? Enough so.
Let's begin, shall we? Brooke has been embroiled in a hot and heavy affair with Gideon, a mysterious and sexy stranger that she doesn't know much about. The problem is that Brooke is married, with a teenage daughter. When she attempts to break it off with Gideon, he doesn't want to let her go so easily. Gideon begins stalking Brooke, harassing her and threatening her already-rocky marriage. One night, Brooke has enough. She snaps, and ends it forever with Gideon...or so she thinks.
Flash forward a couple of years, and Brooke is celebrating the holidays with her family at her vacation home on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest. The past is behind her...or so she believes. When Brooke invites her sister to work on repairing their fledgling relationship, she gets the surprise of her life when her sister shows up with her new boyfriend in tow. Could it be? Is the new boyfriend really Gideon?? (This seemed ridiculous to me, as how would she NOT know it was Gideon). Drama and terror ensue. as Brooke tries to simultaneously escape from Gideon, while also keeping the secret from her husband. When Brooke finds out yet another secret about her sister, fuel is added to the fire. Can Brooke save her family before it all explodes??
I really wanted to enjoy this & love it! BUT i felt like it was entirely too much filler info / pages and the only “crazy parts” were a total of 80 pages.
I was really bored most of this book. When i read thrillers I want to be on the edge of my seat and sit there throughout the entire book.
This one fell really flat for me - the entire basis of the book is also cheating. He’s cheating on her with her sister and she’s cheating on him with a psychopath. Lots of cheating, little thrill and A LOT of fluff/filler.
Was just not for me.
3.5 stars
I've read a lot of Lisa's books. She was one of the very first mystery authors I really enjoyed.
This is not her best work, sadly.
I enjoyed the build up, even though the characters did not pull me in much, the story was well written.
I did not enjoy the ending, however. It really left a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak.
I wanted more! It didn't meet my expectations, at all.
This won't deter me from reading more LJ!
This book has a lot going on but I appreciated the different parts to the story! I didn’t see all the twists coming! The story covered most things I was wondering as the book progressed. I thought the ending wrapped the story up well. There were a couple times when the book felt a little slow, but overall I enjoyed it!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Our Little Secret by Lisa Jackson in return for my honest review.
Brooke who while separated from her husband has an affair with Gideon, when she decides to end the affair Gideon has other ideas.
This a quick easy read with a few twists and turns although much of it was fairly predictable, I enjoyed the story line but thought the ending was a little rushed that being said it is an ok read.
I rate this 3.5/4. It definitely had Fatal attraction vibes. Gideon was such a creepy character. I felt like the storyline stalled a bit in the middle. There were some twists that I did not see coming and a few that I predicted. This my first time reading a book by this author and I would read another book by Lisa Jackson. Overall, I was entertained while reading.
4.5⭐ This thriller had me absolutely hooked, it is truly psychological and has you questioning everything. I knew some of the twists would happen, but I still enjoyed how they were executed. There were a few things that bothered me, like a 14 year old dating an 18/19 year old. Brooke's sister drove me nuts, so she was one of my least favorite characters. I didn't enjoy her outbursts and blaming everything on her. I don't want to give anything away! This story was a page- turner and I didn't want to put it down. Very fast paced, intense and suspenseful read. My heart was racing the entire time and I don't recommend reading this alone in the middle of the night unless you want nightmares lol Gave me The Housemaid vibes, which has been one of my favorite thrillers of the year.
This one was tough, because I love this author. But this book for the most part, just annoyed me. Brooke, the main character, was very unlikeable. And how many times can a person say they're going to take care of something, before they ever actually do? It felt like it dragged, and honestly, the other characters weren't very likeable either. Sadly, I was disappointed.
Thank you to Net Galley and Kensington Publishing for giving me this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Our Little Secret 🤫
Lisa Jackson
🌟🌟🌟
“I would do anything.” “If I had to, I would kill”
Our Little Secret is my first Lisa Jackson book and I did enjoy it, even though it had predictable parts and seemed a bit over the top. This book was full of betrayals, lies and laced with some paranoia. No-one is being honest, which makes you not really connect with any one character. Even though the book was written in Brooke’s POV, I think the author did a good job of helping build the sub characters back stories for us. There is a storyline in the book about 2 missing girls….that sort of just disappeared by the end of the book. There was a lot of time spent on this and I feel like it would have been great to get the end to it (we do for one girl but not the second one). Maybe that’s a future book?! This book itself was also on the longer end, two parts were not tied together as they could have been. Overall, this was an easy read and enjoyable page turner!
Thank you @netgalley @kensingtonpublishing for my EARC!
Lisa Jackson hit the nail on the head with this one. It kept me engaged the entire read. Even after finishing it I still think about this book constantly. I would definitely recommend this one.
After catching her husband having an affair, Brook starts a fling of her own that quickly takes over her life. Her and her husband eventually reconcile but her new lying can't accept that she cut things off an things get dark, quick. The villain is genuinely scary and give you the creeps throughout. While some twists were quite predictable, the book was still amazing. Its fast paced and hard to put down. I love the authors writing style and the attention to detail she has when writing her books.
Once again Ms. Jackson has created the perfect escape, from the get-go this one had me on the edge of my seat and I stayed there the whole way through! It's a thrilling tale of obsession and betrayal that is impossible to put down. This is the first book in a while that has completely take over my attention and let me forget about the world around me. I literally escaped between the pages and I absolutely loved what I found there. A story with substance, intriguing characters and a story line that keeps you on your toes... it doesn't get better than that in my book! Highly recommend!!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
This was a great book! The villain made me scared, tense and anxious at times. There was a good twist and tension throughout. I’d read this again and would suggest it as a good read.
