I rated this title 2.5 ⭐ This was my first book by Lisa Jackson. I've heard of this author before and wanted to try one of her books. This book was not for me. I would categorize this as more of a mystery than a thriller.
The writing was a bit hard to follow. The very suspenseful parts were hard to understand for me. Specifically when Brooke and Gideon fought both times, I was lost. I couldn't picture the scene in my head and therefore the action fell flat. Some parts were very repetitive, and the same phrase was used over and over.
I was interested in the plot. The secrets between the family itself were intriguing. Though I found the end predictable. For example I had a feeling Gideon would go after Brooke's sister. I had my suspicions of the husband and the sister the whole book. I knew Gideon Ross wasn't his real identity.
The only character I fully liked was Marilee. She was the perfect representation of a teenager. (I also loved the dog Shep.) Brooke, I liked throughout the book, and started to dislike towards the end. It took her so long to realize that Eli was Gideon. I know he was playing with her emotions but she shouldn't have doubted herself so many times. A lot of her choices were questionable. I liked her towards the very end when she started to stick up for herself. Neal was useless, and the sister Leah was insufferable.
Maybe I would try a different book by this author. This whole plot I did not relate to. Marriage, cheating, family issues are not what I am used to reading.
This book is a wild roller coaster of twists and I loved every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!! Lisa Jackson never disappointments with her thrillers
Lisa Jackson is one of my favourite authors. However, this one didn't really leave me with the same satisfied feeling!
A couple of things that annoyed me in this book included the main character Brooke, her bratty daughter also irritated me and I wasn't a fan of the cheating, surprise pregnancy, and a miscarriage in poor taste.
I found the twists in this book to be a little predictable, and at times, there seemed to be too much crammed in which left it feeling rushed. The ending, for example, was super predictable but finished so abruptly that it could have been better written to tie everything together, and the epilogue seemed a waste of time.
This was a predictable but fun book. I didn't like any of the characters so whatever happened to them based on their stupidity-great. Obviously everyone is lying. A married couple that doesn't communicate. A daughter who is just a constant, obnoxious PITA. A sister who is obviously using her secret to enrich herself and deflect all challenges. Let them all burn down! Quick read. Not my favorite by this author.
This was disappointing. Affair tropes only work if the adulterer has something to lose by cheating or something to gain with her lover; Brooke has neither. Her house is broken, with a struggling marriage and an ungrateful, hateful and hateable daughter. The book opens with Brooke ending the affair. There's nothing to keep her going and nothing to keep me reading.
Solid mystery!
This was a wel-crafted mystery, full of suspense and gaslighting. Both Neal and Brooke have ventured outside of their marriage, but they trying to make it work. The problem is that the past, including her sister Leah, keeps popping up and causing trouble.
As the reader I really didn’t know who was lying, in a way, they all had things to hide. And who is Gideon really?
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Lisa Jackson never fails and is always a good read. I was expecting the different twists and enjoyed the fast pace - didn't want to put it down. A little predictable, but sometimes that's okay when you want to pick up a good read to just escape.
Great fast paced read! I was hooked from the start and didn’t want to put it down. I loved the suspense and adrenaline throughout this book, the pacing was great. Was definitely surprised quite a bit in this one, I would definitely recommend it!
This was a good quick read! Lisa Jackson did a great job at pulling you in and making scenes super suspenseful where I was on the edge of my seat. Some parts were slower and I had wished something would happen, but she was great at throwing twists and turns throughout the book. I didn’t know who to trust throughout the book, it was tough! I wasn’t sure who to root for. I wish the ending wasn’t so abrupt, I wanted some more detail on that, but other than that, it was a great book!
Jaw dropper! Just when you think it's all going to turn out ok then everything takes a turn for the unexpected!! Twisty, fun read by famed thriller author Lisa Jackson!
This one had a very interesting plot line. Brooke has been having an affair and now decides to end it and work on her marriage. Her ex lover Gideon may not let go as easily as she hopes. Small things start happening and she has no clue if she’s going crazy or what. The question is how far will Brooke go to end the affair and how far will Gideon go to keep it? I loved reading this one. It kept me reading to find out how it was going to end.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for the chance to read and review this book.
I will start by saying that I have read MANY books by Lisa and have enjoyed all of them. This one, not so much.
I agree with a few other reviewers that I didn't care for ANY of these people. Shep, Iliked Shep.
I do not see this as a mystery. I am sorry Brooke found out her husband cheated, but as my mom would say, two wrongs do not make a right.
Do not let me get started about Leah! and Marilee? the daughter? I guess I am very old school, but if I spoke to my parents they way she spoke to hers, I would not have seen my 15th birthday! So rude and and disrespectful
I had to make myself finish this book, not a fan of this one at all
I do thank NetGalley for the advanced copy
Thanks to Kensington Publishing, Net Galley, and Lisa Jackson for an ARC and the chance to give my honest review.
How far would you go for something you wanted?
Brooke Hastings finds herself facing this question many times throughout this story. She is trying to end her an affair with Gideon Ross while her and her husband Neal are rekindling their marriage. Gideon is infatuated with Brooke and will not let her go without a fight. Events turn dark very quickly in this one and we soon realize Brooke is not the only one with secrets.
Such a fast-paced, gripping story that I could not put down. My first Lisa Jackson novel and I am eager to pick up another of her books! I loved the main character Brooke. She was strong, brave, and relatably anxious.
The mother-daughter dynamic was a bit cliche with the bitter/angry teenager. I do wish the ending had been spaced out a little more or even drawn out into a longer book. It felt a bit rushed with a couple of unanswered questions.
Overall great read! Really enjoyed this one
Thank you #Netgalley & #Kensington for the opportunity to read this ARC! #ourlittlesecret
Unfortunately I found this book to be far too predictable. Gideon and Brooke had a brief affair. despite the fact that she has a 14-year-old daughter named Marilee and is married to Neal. But she soon realized that she couldn't abandon her family for the insane Gideon, so she called it quits. To her astonishment, Gideon doesn't accept her answer. In this story.
Honestly the characters are all unlikable 😂 there were some good twists but a few that you can predict. Some parts were kind of cheesy but I was definitely sucked in to the story to see what the final outcome would be.
Due for release in just a few short days, thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read and review prior to release.
Lisa Jackson, a master of psychological thrillers introduces us again to morally grey characters with serious skeletons in their closets.
Brooke has stepped out on her marriage and has regrets, she wants nothing more than to put this liaison behind her.
Unfortunately the man she had an affair with has other ideas.
Gideon... wow, is a true creep, and this one will have you squirming a bit.
What I loved the most was that every character in this one has something to hide, and the suspense that builds as we expose every secret kept me guessing, along with turning those pages late into the night.
This comes out on 6/25/2024 and will be popular, my advice... read it before someone spoils it for you!
This feels more like a cautionary tale than a suspense/thriller. The only character I liked was Shep. Now most of the times I can still enjoy a book with unlikeable characters, but there has to be something about them that I can connect with. At first I thought that maybe I needed to get to know Brooke more before she started the affair, but quickly came to realize that wasn't going to help me worry about her and her plight. (And, side note, that woman needs to never ever drive again!) The pacing and space given to different parts of the book also made this a rough read for me. So much time was spent in the first part of the book. It was too much. And then the second part skips ahead a few years without giving the reader any time to feel like the characters had a sense of normalcy before things went haywire again. And the second part needed a lot more time. It concluded way too fast. This was just a sad group of people who pretty much got what they deserved. Well, maybe not Marilee and Shep. They deserved better. So did the reader.
What if after stepping out on your marriage, you realize you made a mistake? You want to break if off with the new guy, but he won't let you go without a fight. This is the story of Brooke and Our Little Secret. Brooke is a middle aged mom whose marriage is held together by the band aids of pledged loyalty and not much else. Her daughter is a teenager and seemingly hates her and her husband is at best, indifferent. She steps out of her marriage with Gideon, but after a bit, she realizes she doesn't truly care for Gideon and wants to try again to make her marriage work. The only problem is Gideon isn't keen to let her go. He will do whatever it takes to keep Brooke, whether she likes it or not.
Our Little Secret was definitely an action-packed thrill ride. While I did think it was a tad predictable, the action and storyline was so fast-paced that I didn't even care. I was on the edge of my seat for some parts and could not put the book down. This was my first Lisa Jackson book but will not be my last. I am so glad I found this author!
Totally Gripping and Thrilling!
I just finished reading "Our Little Secret" by Lisa Jackson, and it was so good! The story is about Brooke Harmon, who has an affair with a super charming but creepy guy named Gideon Ross. When she tries to end things to save her family, Gideon won’t let go and promises he’ll always be there. Fast forward a bit, and even though Brooke thinks she's moved on, Gideon comes back, and it’s seriously intense!
I loved Brooke’s character because she’s so real and relatable. You can totally feel her fear and determination to protect her family. The way the book dives into her life and shows her relationships, especially with her husband and daughter, made me really care about what happens to her.
The suspense in this book is amazing. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, there’s another twist. Gideon is such a scary character, and his obsession with Brooke kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t put the book down because I had to know what he was going to do next!
The writing is smooth and easy to read, which made the book even more enjoyable. There were a few predictable moments, and I wish the ending had tied up a few more loose ends, but overall, it didn’t take away from how exciting the story was.
If you love psychological thrillers that keep you guessing, you should definitely read "Our Little Secret." It’s got all the drama, suspense, and twists you could want. Lisa Jackson did an awesome job, and I can’t wait to read more of her books!
This book had me hooked! It was my first book from this author. I loved it. Terrific ending! I am already hunting for my next Lisa Jackson book!
The characters are so well developed and the storyline keeps you guessing
This one was not my cup of tea.
I did read through this book quickly, and the premise was interesting, but it just fell flat for me overall. The characters were all extremely unlikable, the plot lines weren't very believable, and I just found the characters too erratic and over the top.
Without spoilers, the actions of the main character Brooke don't really make sense. She feels threatened, and her daughter, whom she loves, is threatened, but she just simply chooses not to go to the police multiple times. She suspects her husband of hiding things but doesn't sneak onto his computer (which seems easily accessible in his study) to confirm her suspicions... she just let's it go. Her sister is an absolute basket case, and yet she doesn't cut her off. I just couldn't see anyone in real life being so naive and misguided.
The ending is rushed for the build-up as well. I did keep turning the pages because I was intrigued to see where the story would end up, but it was underwhelming. I feel like there were plot lines with loose ends.
I did like that the story was fast-paced. The dog Shep (who is a retriever and not a Shepard) also made the story worthwhile.
TWs: Miscarriage, Attempted SA, Voyeurism of a Minor, Infidelity.
Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
