I received a copy of We Did Nothing Wrong by Hannah Jayne, and while I truly appreciated the opportunity, the book left me disappointed overall. The main character's thoughts and feelings are often inconsistent and she's not a very likeable character, all things considered. The "twist" ends up feeling like an afterthought, involving a character who is barely woven into the unfolding events. Moreover, the amount that occurs within a single day muddles the storyline, because it often felt much longer and this removed a major character for much of the storyline when his continued involvement could have added much-needed intrigue. He engages in at least two obviously suspicious actions, yet there’s no follow-through or explanation provided for his behavior. It's as though the main character forgets completely, but any reader actually following the storyline does not. This is probably an overly honest review, but even the title of the story is misleading when one considers how the conclusion and how it all comes to be. Overall, despite what initially seemed very intriguing, the execution fell short, in my opinion.

I didn't love this one. It was pretty predictable. A quick read if you're looking for a mystery ala Frieda or Keirstyn style.

Slowly unraveling mystery!
Lia and Diana have been friends since the first day of kindergarten when Diana introduced herself to Lia. They have grown up together as best friends but things have been strained lately. Lia is tired of hearing all about Diana and the pageants she wins and constantly prepares for. When Diana goes missing, Lia thinks Diana is playing a joke on everyone and will show back up soon. As days go by, Lia becomes worried and desperate to find her friend.
Likes/dislikes: I liked how the author kept me guessing as I read the story. The conflict between Lia and Diana and within Lia herself, made the suspense grow and the story more interesting. Suspicion was everywhere!
Mature content: PG for kissing.
Language: R for 38 swears and 2 f-words.
Violence: PG-13 for bloody hitting, abduction and off page death.
Ethnicity: falls to white.

This one took a bit for the action to pick up, but it was well worth it. I won't go into a lot of detail to avoid spoilers, but the ending was fantastic! There were some minor plot holes as well, but who cares, it's all for fun!

A YA thriller for those looking to start reading the genre.

Lia feels guilty. She’s secretly been kissing her best friend’s boyfriend, but with the way Diana has been acting with her teen pageant stuff, Lia doesn’t feel too guilty. When she plans to meet her at their neighborhood park, Lia shows up late only to have Diana stand her up. But as the days go on, Diana doesn’t show up anywhere. Lia has also been receiving roses from a secret admirer she thought was Diana’s boyfriend, but now knows isn’t. Is this the person who has Diana? Can Lia figure it out before it’s too late?

My issues with this book: not much happens throughout it other than the FMC running around, paranoid and guilty, working up theories in her head. I also didn’t really feel the friendship between the girls. The kidnapper was a surprise so that might redeem it a bit for others, but I just found the pacing off and not enough of a mystery for me.
CW: kidnapping, death, blood, confinement, infidelity, toxic relationship, emesis, grief

I have mixed feelings about this book. I think it’s a good introductory YA thriller for young readers. It was very slow and at times tedious to get through. It wasn’t until about 65% that anything really started to happen. I also felt like I was left with a lot of unanswered questions at the end. The motivations of the capture were never really explained. It also didn’t feel like the concept was original. This type of plot has been done many times before.
Overall, I think young YA readers will enjoy this book as it feels very immature. I wouldn’t recommend the book to readers who regularly read YA thrillers. You’ll get bored.

The epitome of a teen mystery/thriller. Had me hooked right away, perfect for the 12-16 market who are dipping their toe into the genre.

This was so good. i was hooked from the start, the mystery, twists, everything was jawdropping good.
Definitely recommend to put on your on TBR!

While I have enjoyed and even loved some young adult novels in the past, this was a bit too YA for me. The storyline was intriguing but dragged in the first half, gradually picking up its pace in the second. The protagonist was very unlikable but was intended. The writing style is what kept me going, and I did find the ending to be the best part. Overall, this was an okay read that I believe younger readers will enjoy more. Three stars.
Thank you, Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire, for this ARC.

Thank you to sourcebooks and NetGalley for this arc. It wasn’t my favorite book by any means. Pretty slow read and I found myself bored until about 60% in. The main character was annoying the hell out of me and it really had to much drag in the whole story.

Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinions are completely my own.
We did Nothing Wrong follows the typical YA thriller trope and there is nothing wrong with that. The story is well written and evolves at a good pace. I enjoyed it.

Hannah Jayne’s We Did Nothing Wrong is a gripping psychological thriller that builds tension steadily, taking the reader on a suspenseful journey through mystery, betrayal, and the complexities of friendship. While the story starts off slowly, it gradually gains momentum, pulling readers deeper into the unsettling question of what happened to a missing best friend.
The narrative cleverly keeps you guessing: did the friend disappear voluntarily, or was she taken? Jayne masterfully plants doubt and suspicion, creating an atmosphere of unease. Her ability to mirror the uncertainty and paranoia of her protagonist is particularly effective, making the reader feel as if they, too, are piecing together the puzzle in real time.
The ending is a standout. Without giving away spoilers, it ties the narrative threads together in a way that feels both unexpected and satisfying. It’s the kind of conclusion that lingers, leaving you to reconsider the clues and red herrings scattered throughout the book.
For fans of thrillers, We Did Nothing Wrong will evoke memories of some of the best suspense films, with its twists, tension, and psychological depth. It’s a story that rewards patience, delivering a payoff that makes the slow start worthwhile.

I had a blast reading this book! I always love Hannah Jayne mysteries, and the synopsis of this one sounded really intriguing! I wanted to get to know these friends, and find out what was going on with Diana, and the secret admirer, and what their intentions were!
Alongside Lia, I wondered if maybe Diana was behind her disappearance. Because while they were childhood friends, they have been drifting apart, and grievances are building up, with Diana always getting the spotlight, and Lia and Eli, Diana's boyfriend, have something building between them. So I was interested to see if this book would go in that direction.
Lia is a teenager, her brain is still developing. Which sometimes meant that she did some not-smart things that I, as an adult, was shaking my head at. Like there was that one rose left on her back stair after she had brought it up to her parents. Why didn't she show them this new one, like, someone is sneaking around their backyard in a time where her best friend has gone missing. That's not normal behaviour, and could've helped her case. Alas.
Reading that ending was so satisfying! After all that had happened, I'm glad that it worked out that way. It was such a thrilling ending, and I wanted the bad guy to go down! The connections between them all have been battered, but they got through it, and I'm so glad! Though I do wish we could've had a bit more of the time after, because it was just done.
Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Hannah Jayne!

Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the chance to read We did nothing wrong by Hannah Jayne. Another good YA thriller by the author, I did find the start a bit slow, and the main character was a bit annoying. Halfway through the story did pick up. While this may not thrill the adults who enjoy reading YA, I believe the teens will enjoy it.

We Did Nothing Wrong by Hannah Jayne is a great YA thriller.
Very well written, and the characters were all realistic and very well developed.
I really enjoyed the writing style. I found myself gripped, turning the pages, not knowing what was to come next.

This book has been quite the surprise because while I obviously knew it was going to be a YA thriller, I found the main character to be a fresh take for this genre! The way the author portrayed the reactions of the characters to the disappearance truly highlighted the fact that they were teens, and that this mistery was way too big for them to handle, specially for Lia.
📍This story takes place in Empire Hill, the high school Diana and Lia attend. The girls have been neighbors and best friends since they were toddlers, but high school is tough for everyone and Lia wants to be her own person, separated from Diana. We follow the girls and their friends as tragedy strikes, and suddenly nobody’s able to tell who’s the friend and who’s the foe, and trust seems misplaced even in the most familiar, loved faces.
✍️The author presents a story with a slow start, but as soon as the pace picks up, it’s impossible to put down. Diana disappears right at the beginning and we see Lia trying to cope with the situation: at first, she thinks her friend is pranking her because she’s found out about Lia’s secret relationship and wants to somehow punish her for not being honest; but as the days go by without Diana, Lia’s initial theory starts to crumble and we see her spiraling. Since the story is told by Lia’s POV, we follow her descent into absolute hysteria as she anxiously looks for clues while also desperately wants to believe her friend isn’t truly missing. The author masterfully explores the mind of a seventeen-year-old who kept a secret from her best friend and decides that it’s a big enough offense for her friend to disappear as a way to teach her a lesson, refusing at first to play detective because she’s terribly scared of facing the reality of her best friend being in danger, of never seeing her again. Lia isn’t naive, she knows something has happened to Diana, but as you read you understand she just can’t face the truth, and I loved how the author let Lia get crazier every chapter as her world came crashing down around her.
👥Diana and Lia are the main characters of this story, two best friends whose interests are so different it’s starting to push them apart. Diana is a pageant queen, she’s the most popular girl at school and everybody loves her, but underneath the bubbly personality there’s a girl who wants to become a Supreme Court Justice and is willing to go the extra mile to get what she wants. And Lia is a super smart girl who has a bright future as a scientist ahead of her, who also plays the bass with her band, but despite her merits, Lia feels overshadowed by Diana and is constantly trying to distance herself from her friend. Both girls know their friendship has changed and we see them trying to come to terms with it, but as the story progresses we, along with Diana and Lia, realize that sometimes miscommunication is the biggest enemy of every relationship. Nonetheless, I have to say there’s a cheating plot that involves one of the girls, and that I absolutely despised it as I felt it was not needed for the story, and the ending would have had the same impact!
🖇️I loved this story mainly because I loved Lia’s reaction to her friend’s disappearance, she was worried right away but she tried to dismiss it and play it cool by convincing herself that it was all a big prank. Lia didn’t turn into a detective overnight, she kept acting like a teenager and she was still a child when things got serious, as she started doubting everyone and seeing Diana everywhere. I think the author brilliantly told a YA thriller in which the heart of the story are the teenagers, their friendships, their mistakes, their fears, while also including a cautionary tale that those who blend in the most might hide the darkest secrets.

We Did Nothing Wrong is a YA thriller book that kept me on the edge of my seat. It was about the relationship between two main characters, Diana and Lia. The book started out slow but it picked up about half way in and was a fast twisty read from there until the ending! A teen book with lots of drama and a diabolical ending.
Synopsis: Everyone thinks Diana is a runaway, including the police. Lia is secretly convinced it's all a prank. Then she finds a crushed red rose tied with a candy-cane ribbon where Diana went missing. And next to it, a YOU It's the same ribbon Lia's received on gifts from a "secret admirer." Did someone come for Diana that night? And will Lia be next?
Many thanks to #NetGalley #SourcebooksFire and #WeDidNothingWrong for providing me with an E-ARC of this book.

I am DNFing this book.
Unfortunately, something about the characters feels off and I can't really believe their reactions and thoughts, and so even tho I'm 35% into the book, I still can't get into the story.
I did like that the main character is morally grey (for a YA) and not a perfect person, and the mystery could have a satisfying end, but I'm not invested enough to continue reading.
I would still recommend this book because it might be just a personal preference, and I will be giving this author another try in the future.
Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the opportunity to read this ARC.

I’ll give this one a 3.5 ⭐️ rating. It is YA, and I did feel it is aged appropriately (12-14). You’ve got the popular “queen” who thinks she knows it all and rules the school, and her best friend who’s a bit more modest, and trying to gain some distance. The Queen Diana goes missing, the town thinks she’s run away, her BFF Lia thinks it’s a prank to get sympathy and a “boost” of popularity when she’s found … but is there something else going on? Lia has a secret, one that would make Diana SO mad … did Diana find out and run away to punish Lia? Did she get abducted? Did she run away to start pageant life? Where is Diana?

Thank you NetGalley! This is my second book by this author. It is a typical Young Adult novel complete with best friends, missing teenagers and craziness. I liked it!
