Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
Was super excited to get an early copy of Kyle Prue’s book and it delivered! Fun, pithy, hilarious, with a nice little serious end cap.
Now, I normally read and review serious nonfiction books, maybe a few memoirs here and there, but How to Piss Off Men is the rare exception. This funny little book is a wonderfully light read, especially if you know Prue's style of humour already and/or follow him on social media. For those who don't, this book is written in the style of his ultra-popular TikTok series by the same name, where he just lists simple phrases and the effect they'll have on (most) men. It's incredibly tongue-in-cheek, with a little cultural criticism tossed in for funsies. The book continues that same vibe, and is therefore an excellent coffee-table-style piece of "literature".
Honestly, the only criticism I have of the book is I wish that the more sentimental, critical of the patriarchy and its societal structures, section at the very end was either (1) longer or (2) occurred more frequently throughout the book (or hidden option (3) both). The metaphor of women being put in boxes they can't escape, but importantly so are men, by the patriarchy wasn't necessarily "original" in the purest sense, but it was definitely an impactful way to finish this book.
Before I sign off on this review... I have some experience with geese. My Poppa - grandfather - had a real mean goose that guarded the chickens and their eggs from foxes. So Kyle, as someone who's actually fought a goose, I just gotta say: I feel like you prefer your eggs store-bought.
Have you ever been mansplained? Been subjected to the overwhelming ego of a mediocre man? If so, you may be entitled to compensation in the form of 'How to Piss Off Men.'
This was funny and full of witty antics that may or may not ever be said out loud but will most definitely be a part of Internal monologs. In a week of the bear being chosen over and over again, choose the goose and let yourself laugh a little.
My suggestion for readers of this book is to look up the author’s instagram and watch one of his videos (just one, you don’t want to spoil the whole thing) so you can hear his delivery and have that in your mind while reading. I wondered if having followed Kyle Prue on instagram for so long would make the book feel stale, but it definitely did not. I only wish there were more asides and explanations, I loved the extra narration some of the points had- the author’s insight was my favorite part.
Overall very funny and would make a great gift!
in the interest of full disclosure, i'm a kyle prue fan. i've long followed him for his "how to piss off men" series, because there's something so great about a man revealing the cheat codes on how to neg men back. and as he succinctly summarizes it in the book: all you really need to do is treat men the way that they treat women.
this was a great book. i think i read everything out loud to my mom who snickered along and started to come up with her own dunks on men.
though this book is pretty much exactly what the title says it is, i also appreciated the tender-hearted, sincere insight that kyle had at the end of the book - about seeing that society taught men violence, about seeing a relative with dementia sharing cake that kyle brings him even though this relative considers him a stranger, about the default act when all is nearly gone being kindness, and about how kyle wants to foster that kindness in himself.
not only that, but he acknowledges that sometimes these ridiculous "insults" are a way to get men to be introspective about the crappy behaviors and emotions the patriarchy has instilled in them, that maybe dismantling the patriarchy also has to include letting go of its indoctrinations, too.
don't get me wrong, this is mostly an extremely unserious, funny little book. and you should all read it. maybe not if you're ed helms, though.
As an avid watcher of Kyle’s Tiktoks, not all of these were new to me. However having them bound in one delightfully useful package is a gift. Specifically it’s a gift I’ll be giving to all of the women in my life who need this book. Because let’s be real, we all need it.
This book was brilliant, insightful, and at times, a little frightening in its accuracy. But I loved it and can’t wait to share it.
One of the reasons I loved Shakespeare was because he was a master of insults, and they were SMART. Great insults are clever and usually make the insulted person do a little self-examination.
That's exactly what these insults do. Prue is a king of finding insults that aren't even direct, instead allowing the insulted person do all the work.
I'm going to be reading this multiple times because it will always make me laugh. I highly recommend this as a gift or coffee table book for anyone with a sense of humor. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
As a fan of Kyle Prue’s content it’s not surprise I loved this. His voice came through so clearly in the book — it really translated well from video to print. It was a quick, entertaining read and I appreciated how genuine and reflective the final chapter was regarding patriarchy and the male ego.
These were all great insults that I could legitimately see myself using. They were quick and devastating.
This would make a great gift for someone as a funny bathroom book or coffee table book. I had a few chuckles and it was more humors than exowcted... I would die to a Canadian goose though
BE NO MAN’S PEACE.
😂🤣😭 This book had me in stitches! Seriously, I couldn't stop laughing. When I saw the title, I was like, “Say no more!” The author, Kyle Prue (a cis white man, no less... gotta love a man with a sense of humor 🤭), gives us 109 insider tips, phrases, and comebacks on how to crush the male ego. Some of these tips hit hard and fast, while others are like a slow burn that'll haunt a man for years. And let me tell you, this book did not disappoint. I was cackling the whole time. Some of these phrases have already made their way into my notes app, just waiting for the perfect moment to unleash them (which, knowing my luck, won't be long since I seem to always be surrounded by annoying “alpha men.” Poor me.). Some were so good, they even pissed me off as a woman! But even the cringy ones had me cracking up. Part of why I loved this book so much was definitely the writing. It's witty, straightforward, with a fun undertone, and the short chapters made it a quick, insightful read. I enjoyed every second of it, and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a good laugh or just wants to royally tick off men.
*Thank you NetGalley, SOURCEBOOKS (non-ficiton), and the author for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.*
I'm so grateful the publisher has approved me to access this and other non-fiction titles, because Sourcebooks publishes some bangers.
This book is hilarious! I've seen the authors viral TikTok series and I recently watched an episode of Drew Afualo's podcast, The Comment Section, wre he was a guest and talked about this book. I knew I had to read it! Because I'm familiar with his videos, I read it in the author's voice which made it even funnier. There were a few niche references I didn't get, but overall, I think the references and of course the theme are so timely. I also liked the personal anecdotes and analytical tidbits added, which served a reminder to think on the theme a bit between chuckles.
I own Milk and Vine as a funny coffee table book that I still pick up for a laugh, and I can see myself adding this book to that collection as well as gifting it to friends plagued by interactions with men.
I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard while reading a book. It was hilarious and even more ironic when I read Insult 10, "Oh! They sang this on Glee," while watching Glee while reading. The reviews on the back are perfect for continuing the running satire and jokes in this book. It was hilarious, and I loved it so much. If you want a good laugh and some insults this is the book for you. I can assure you it will piss off men.
A hilarious, quick read. I only wish there was more! I'll definitely be trying some of these out on some of my coworkers lol
How to Piss Off Men is a must-read for literally everyone who has spoken to more than 3 men in their life. I literally can’t wait for this book to come out so I can gift it to friends. Thank you Netgalley & Source Books for allowing me to ready it early!!
Kyle Prue uses his qualifications (from the school of hard knocks 🤠) to guide those unfortunate enough to be born as the desirable sex of straight men on their quest to cause absolute devestation. The balance that he strikes between social commentary and entertainment is FLAWLESS. You know how when you read a book and it’s really good, you see a movie in your head? This movie was a nondescript group of men in jeans yelling in an empty room with a lot of holes in the walls while an audiobook of How to Piss Off Men was playing on a loop using a low-quality speaker system.
This is the funniest thing I’ve ever read even if it is, at times, an ‘if you don’t laugh you’ll cry’ funny. I read this in the middle of the night and had to leave the room because I was snickering too much & almost woke up my baby.
P.S. just a friendly reminder if you wanna comment that this book/review is sexist/misandristic:
A. I don’t care.
B. Women laughing at men’s fragility is not comparable to men literally murdering women for funzies. Go take a nap or something.
How to Piss off men was very funny! I loved the explanations and also how various insults were actually said to the author previously. Very funny
I absolutely love Kyle Prue and cheered when I saw my request for an arc copy from NetGalley and Sourcebooks was approved. He does not disappoint in what I hope is the first of many volumes on this topic.
Obviously all of the ways to piss of men are hilarious, but my favorite is number 52. I won’t spoil it here because you need to read it yourself. I have also accidentally used 68 a lot of times when I was NOT trying to piss off men, so I will vouch for that one personally. What can I say? Kyle knows what he’s talking about.
I loved the insight in the final section, “why to piss off men”, that you don’t get in Kyle’s videos.
Clearly I’m biased, but if I just randomly found this book on a shelf I would find it equally hilarious. A quick and fun read…well, as a woman anyway.
Need ways to piss off men? It's not particularly hard, but Kyle Prue has a list of tried-and-true questions and comments to unsettle even some of the least fragile men. Comments like "Were you a leash kid?" and texting a man "I'm here." and then turning off your phone. All of this culminates in the last chapter where Kyle explains WHY someone would want to piss off a man - besides it being objectively hilarious. Kyle discusses how the patriarchy causes men to view themselves and how anger can be a tool for learning, if men let it be.
This book had me in absolute stitches. Kyle is truly a gifted writer and his commentary is not only entertaining but genuinely interesting and illuminating as to why men act the way they do. This is an unserious book about a serious topic: how the patriarchy harms everyone, including men. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and my library will certainly be buying a copy...or two.
Honest to all gods. I requested this for the funny puns, but this was so much more than that.
The anecdotes.
The way the author wraps you in his stories.
The last part, oh my God... so good!
This was unexpectedly more awesome than I thought it was going to be.
Thank you to Sourcebooks and the author for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Came for the puns and stayed for the personal anecdotes - this was truly a great laugh.
Thanks for the giggle and for the reminder that I really can wreck someones day with a well timed head tilt and glee reference, that's all I need to get through my week to be honest.
