I love paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and all things that go bump in the night, so I expected this book to be a winner for me. However, I found it more of a chore to read than enjoyable. Although it is part of a series, the description claims it can be read as a stand-alone, which I did not find to be the case. Perhaps the more recent editions have been edited for clarity, but this felt very much like a continuation of the first book, and I believe it’s necessary to read that one beforehand.
There was so much happening that I often felt lost until later in the story. Additionally, the couple didn’t resonate with me; their interactions felt inconsistent. At times, the writing was filled with verbose descriptions, and then a few pages later, it would resort to one-word responses. I just wasn’t in love with it. The premise was intriguing, but the execution fell flat for me. Maybe if it had been a true stand-alone or if I had read the first book, I would have connected with the story more, but as it stands, it was a miss for me.
