Mind Games is my second Nora Roberts book. I will say that I expected something slightly different. I thought it would be a bit more thriller-like, but I did enjoy what we got. I loved the found family and the romance, and it kept me intrigued until the end.
January Lavoy's narration is fantastic as always.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors. She never fails me. I loved this book. It had it all romance, with plot twists. I love the relationship Thea had with her grandmother. I absolutely love January Lavoy as a narrator, and she was perfect for this book. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of the book.
Mind Games by Nora Roberts was a great story. The story had many twists and turns with some surprises along the way. The narrator was easy to listen to.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I love Nora Roberts, and her storytelling is unmatched. January LaVoy is an amazing narrator and brought the story to life.
Thea and her brother, Rem, have to go live with their Grandmother, Lucy, after a man brutally kills their parents. Thanks to Thea's gift of sight, the police is able to capture the killer and put him in prison for the rest of his life, but the monster has the same abilities as Thea and starts haunting her via his gift... Later in life, Thea has learned to harness her gift and uses her creative talent to design video games. She is now back close to Lucy, but everything changes when she finds out that her teenage heartthro crush, Ty, and his son, Bray, are their new neighbours...
This romantic suspense was a really good one! I have to say the "romance" side of it is a bit light and comes fairly late in the story, and it's really more of a side plot than the actual focus of the story. I loved Bray, he was so cute! There was a bit of a "sagging" part in the middle, where things were dragging a little. Nora Roberts sure is long-winded. This was a really good book, but it would've benefited being about a quarter shorter. But she knows how to write a good story with amazing casts of well developed characters. If you're looking for a good Nora Roberts book, this one will absolutely do.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is heart breaking, it was very well written but it is dark.
I loved the relationship between the children and the grandmother.
The fantasy element gives this story a dark side and the romance and family give it a positive and warm feeling too.
The narration is very good.
Mind Games was dark and twisted. It was also so heart breaking. The relationships between the siblings and the Grandmother were absolutely the best as well as the farm setting.
Nora Roberts is best selling author for a reason: she sucks you in. Some might say she is formulaic and her writing is predictable, it doesn’t matter. She gets you. I was completely drawn into the Kentucky landscape. Probably because it reminded me so much of my own grandmother. And the next thing you know, you’re 50% through. She doesn’t it again!
I haven't read a Nora Roberts book in quite a while. This book instantly hooked me with the description of the watching of the mother. Without knowing who the man was I new something bad was goingto happen. I liked the strength of the daughter and her ability to fight him off in her brain. Also her strenght to actually meet him in person at the jail.I enjoyed this style of writing for Nora.
My goodness, I’ve forgotten how much I love Nora Roberts’ books. It has been years since I’ve picked up one of hers and when I had the opportunity to get this one from Macmillan Audio and NetGalley, I just had to grab it, and boy am I happy I did.
January LaVoy does a fantastic job narrating this book. I could not stop listening even though it was a longer book.
This book starts off so sad. When a dream shows a granddaughter and grandmother pair of a tragedy occurring somewhere else in the country, everything changes. The granddaughter actually sees the murderer, and gets him put behind bars. The two have a twisted connection, all the way up until Thea is an adult. The characters are so well developed. I loved Thea and her family, and hated the murderer, just the way I should have.
This book had me grabbing every Nora book on my shelves to read.
I really enjoyed it. It was sad and exciting, everything I love about Nora Roberts books. It does include both childhood and adulthood story that could almost be two books in one. But it set up the story so well that I had a hard time putting it down.
5 stars
As an avid Nora Roberta fan I really enjoyed listening to this book. The narrator is one of my favorites. A bit of mystery, psychic ability, and romance ticks off boxes for many different readers. Highly recommend!
Mind Games by Nora Roberts - My FIRST Nora Roberts book. Nora Roberts really knows how to do characters. You can truly feel that you either love or hate the characters. You can feel the tension building between them throughout the book. The ending left me with a bit to be desired but I think I was just expecting something different from the ending. The whole book really kept my attention and was so unique. I was sad when this was over because I loved most of these characters! Loved the narrators too!
Mind Games AUDIO by Nora Roberts is a romance but really that part is anti-climactic given the rest of the book. I have never read or listened to a Nora Roberts book before and that has been a mistake. This listen was fresh with a fabulous storyline, even if it possibly stretched the bounds of reason. A young man and his wife were killed in their beds one night by a bad man. He resented their things. What he didn’t know is that the couple’s daughter had what is known as “the sight,” and she had witnessed every moment of it. She could even tell where he had stopped to sleep and could describe him to a police sketch artist. By the next day he was in custody, his room full of their belongings and those of others he’d murdered. Life in prison. Thea Fox checked on him often, using her gift, not realizing that he had the gift, too, and would haunt her.
What an amazing story. Such unbelievable behavior and yet, such normal people. The children, Thea and Rem, stayed with their grandmother, where they’d been the night of the murders. Neither ever went back. The uncles retrieved their belonging and their lawyer saw the house and furnishing were sold. They both had plenty of money. Where they lived, in Kentucky, Thea’s gift was accepted, but she learned quickly to keep it to herself out in the world. She and Rem each bought five acres from Miss Leona, down the road. Thea became a game developer and designed and built herself a house. When Miss Leona passed, Thea felt her leave. Shortly her grandson arrived, bringing with him a four-year-old boy. His son. They grew close until one day he misread the situation and they quarreled.
January LaVoy was the reader for this extraordinary novel and she read it well, with nuance and grace, giving it all the layers it deserved. What an extraordinary performance. I’d give it more than five stars if I could.
I was invited to listen to Mind Games by MacMillan Audio. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #MacMillanAudio #NoraRoberts #MindGames
WOW, this book... Gut wrenching beginning and a wonderful story of love for family, being true to yourself and finding your people in life.
I was unsure what this story would bring but the description was very tempting. I am glad I gave it a go, the story was different and unique. The characters were developed. There were some true twists along the way and did not really start out in what I thought would end in a happily ever after, but it did. This story takes you on a journey from the eyes of a young girl who sees her parents in a tragic ending, going to live with her grandma, dealing with true and real family issues on the events after death. Growing up and understanding she has a gift, what that means to her, her grandma, her brother and the police. Becoming an adult, falling in love, being vulnerable, staying true to who you. I would recommend and loved this book. So much so, I did listen to this in audio as well when working on a house project. I loved it even more the second time. The audio was done extremely well.
I've seen titles by Nora Roberts in the past but had not experienced her writing before now. The same can be said for January LaVoy who narrates the audiobook.
At times, Mind Games is disturbing with grim subject matter and the thought of people able to project into your mind. I had started listening to the audiobook while driving and my 23-year-old son gave me some side eye to question my choice of audiobook as it was dark quite quickly.
Balancing the dark subject matter are occasions when you see Thea, Rem, and their grandmother, Lucy, thoroughly enjoying each other's company. The book is written so that vivid pictures are painted in your mind's eye. I could imagine the calm feeling Lucy's home provided for Thea and Rem. But, I could also feel the fear pulsing through a young Thea as she remotely witnesses her parents' demise.
Written in multiple parts, you go from the terrible, life-altering murder of Thea and Rem's parents to her life in college and then as an adult. Additional characters make their way into the story, but at the heart, it is mostly about the disturbing and strange connection between Thea and the man who killed her parents.
Thank you Nora Roberts, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for providing this audiobook ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
Mind Games was both riveting and compelling. I paired the e-arc with the audiobook, narrated by January LaVoy, which is one of my favourites. January LaVoy was excellent at differentiating between the many characters throughout the storytelling. Lavoy emotes the characters' grief, heartbreak, and joy through her narration. She did an outstanding job. She brought me along for the ride. With bringing them alive, I could picture them in my mind's eye. It was well-paced and cleverly written. I was captivated from beginning to end and had difficulty saying goodbye to the characters.
This book turned out to be so much more than I had been expecting. Nora Roberts has a way with a plot! There a layers to this story which I fully appreciated. Perfect book for summer. Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to get my hands on it.
THOUGHTS:
I’m not going to lie I struggled with this book a bit at the beginning. I felt that it was very dark very quickly and I wonder if it is just me or if all of her books have always been this way and I am just more aware of it. I will say I absolutely loved Thea and Rem throughout this book, along with Lucy, their grandmother. The relationship between them is one that I wish all siblings have but I know that it is not always the case. Thea and Lucy’s gift is truly amazing and can be used for such good but also the bad that encroaches their lives at every turn. The love story intertwined is enjoyable as well and Bunk is probably my favorite character…guess you’ll hav to read to find more about these wonderful characters. Thank you @netgalley for allowing me the privilege of listening to the audiobook before it was released!

Mind Games by Nora Roberts is a romantic suspense story, with a paranormal storyline. It also has a dark thriller undertone, all set with a family drama playing out. John and Cora Fox take their two children, twelve-year old Thea and ten-year old Rem, to visit their maternal grandmother Lucy in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky every June. The kids are excited as they love spending time with her. John and Cora return to Virginia, looking forward to their "alone time". They are very much in love and everyone can see it. Within a few days of being back home, tragedy strikes and they are murdered in their bed. Thea and Lucy (grandmother) have powers to see things, and they both wake up, with Thea having seen the murder in her sleep. "The gift" is passed down through the females in the family, but Thea's is much stronger than Lucy's and she is able to identify the killer from her nightmare, assisting the police by working with a sketch artist. This begins a lifelong battle with the killer in her mind. Thea and Rem remain with their grandma being raised in a loving home, in a beautiful setting of the Appalachians, but Thea has to deal with her gift all her life. She eventually meets someone she could have a relationship with, but the evil and darkness of her parent's killer, continues to invade her days and nights.
Mind Games is a story set over more than ten years. We see Thea and Rem grow up and flourish under the love of their grandma and the community. This is a wonderful juxtaposition to the darkness that continues to invade Thea's mind. The characters are well-developed and likable. Lucy is an amazing grandma, and lovingly shares her wisdom with her grandchildren. Secondary characters add to the story, and I really liked the two police detectives that are involved with the case and pop in and out of the story at times. When Thea finds romance, it was a wonderful addition to the story and I loved his young son, who stole the heart of all Thea's family, as well as mine. Things don't go smoothly and when the darkness continues to push in on Thea, she has to do something dangerous, if she wants a normal life. Although it is a bit longer than many books I read or listen to, the build up and development of the characters was all part of the story to make the characters believable and relatable. I really enjoyed this story and the narration by January LaVoy on the audiobook was amazing. The voices she gave the characters made them come alive for me and pulled me right into the story. If you have a chance to listen to this book, I highly recommend it.
