"i have the right to take up space"

4/⭐

I know not my typical book but healing is important

Nakeia makes it easier for you to talk about things
She asks questions in her books even giving you the space to answer within it

Telling you over and over again things like you are aloud to take up space, i will respect my limits I'm aloud to say no

She doesn't only talk about the clinical/theoretical part of healing but also her story, her experiences and how change effected her

A book worthy of its title i would recommend

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Nakeia Homer for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Habits for Healing: Reclaim Your Purpose, Peace, and Power coming out September 17, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I received this book directly from NetGalley. This isn’t a book I would typically pick out for myself to read. I’m not super into self-help books. But I actually really loved this one! I thought she had a really awesome message about making time and taking the effort to fix your issues while also showing yourself forgiveness and acceptance. I’m a big believer in self-care and reflection on what can I change about myself to do and be better? Some people definitely go through a lot of trauma in their lives and everyone will have ups and downs. I think this book provides healthy tips on how to deal with it. I loved that she had a lot of personal experiences and she added her faith to the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books about healing!

First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author of this book for giving me an opportunity to have and read the ARC.

Honestly, I chose to request 3 titles of self-help books because I have my personal struggles and this is the 2nd one. It was a bit lengthy for me but I did my best because I want to give it a proper review.

I want to give it 5 stars because of the effort but I gave a lower rating because I wanted to drop it halfway. I know that the author give it her best shot to share a piece of her to the world but it felt a bit like a textbook for me. Still, thank you for the slap to reality. It somehow helped me to calm down despite the toxicity in my workplace. Before I read this, I was thinking of not going to work anymore. It helped me manage it even for a bit.

For the author, I hope this review won't stop you from writing more and improve your craft.

Habits for Healing is an incredibly important self-help book that is a heartfelt guide to healing from our past traumas and negative behaviors and ultimately finding peace and self-empowerment. I felt like Ms. Homer was speaking directly to me, and I could deeply relate to examples that she shared. She also offers journaling cues for self-reflection and powerful affirmations at the end of each chapter. I also appreciated that although the author is a mother, she doesn't just rely on anecdotes about parenting and raising children. She addresses many different facets of a person's life. She gives sage, heartfelt advice and wisdom. This book is extraordinary, and I'm grateful to have read it. Thanks to NetGalley and Convergent Books for the ARC.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Nakeia delves into the lives of many of us. We all need to take care of ourselves, and take time for ourselves. She talked about taking the long way when driving so that you can spend more time with your self care. You don't have to be a parent to need self care. A must read for all individuals.

In "Habits for Healing," Nakeia Homer, a seasoned well-being educator and former counselor, provides a compassionate guide to overcoming past traumas and embracing a life that truly reflects who we are and what we value most in life. Drawing on her extensive experience and personal journey of healing, Homer offers readers practical rituals that convert abstract concepts like boundaries and self-care into daily habits. I enjoyed all of the concrete tools shared in the text that make incorporating the habits shared fairly simple.

Habits are hard to break because they are deeply ingrained in our brains through established neural pathways, making behaviors automatic and saving mental energy. Many habits are tied to the brain's reward system, releasing dopamine and reinforcing the behavior. Changing a habit disrupts our routines and comfort, causing resistance. Breaking a habit requires consistent effort, persistence, and addressing any underlying emotional factors that may be involved. Nakeia's suggestions for how to go about establishing new habits makes the journey of change feel possible and less overwhelming.

Through compelling storytelling and reflective prompts, she illustrates how simple actions can lead to a change in perspective and promote emotional healing. This book is a powerful resource for anyone looking to break free from patterns of burnout and emotional exhaustion. Homer's warmth and deep insights make "Habits for Healing" an essential companion on your mental health journey, encouraging readers to live in their true power.

This was such a refreshing take on identifying and embracing the importance of self-care and personal accountability in our own healing processes. I loved the anecdotal portions, but where I found the most benefit was in the sections pertaining to practices, reflection prompts, and affirmations for personal exploration.
