This book is full of great recipes! I've only tried a couple so far, but loved each one. I'm looking forward to trying more.
This is perfect for all chocolate lovers! There's tips on how to work with various kinds of chocolate. The recipes look delicious! The recipes that I'm most excited to try are Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Shortbread Cookies, Creamy Chocolate Cheesecake Bars, White Chocolate Chip Confetti Cake, Strawberry White Chocolate Chantilly Cake, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Pie, Chocolate Banana Cream Pie, Chocolate Chip Banana Nut Scones and Peanut Butter Chocolate Buns. I would recommend this! Special Thank You to Michele Song, Chronicle Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was a super fun and informative cookbook with lots of mouthwatering recipes. I'm looking forward to adding this book to my cookbook collection. As a fan of all things chocolate, I highly recommend this wonderful dessert cookbook.
I am a HUGE chocolate lover. I will never not order a chocolate dessert or treat when it’s available. So this book is right up my alley! I cannot wait to work through all these recipes!!
These pictures look so good! My creations didn't look as nice but they tasted wonderful. A great gift!
Michelle Song’s Chocolate Lover cookbook is a feast for the eyes. The accompanying photos showcase white, milk and dark chocolate desserts. There are recipes for weeknight bakes, giftable treats and special occasion sweets. The recipe layout is easy to follow and sets the baker up for success!
This cookbook would be especially great for someone who is a serious baker. If you are looking for quick and easy recipes, there aren't many of those in this book. But, as a chocolate lover, I truly drooled over many of the photos within. Many of the recipes have unexpected ingredients, such as Raspberry Swirl Goat Cheese Cheesecake Bars or Miso Peanut Butter Blondies. But the descriptions that accompany the recipe explain the sort of taste one might experience and, I think, help to sell the unusual treat. I'm particularly intrigued by the Orange and Olive Oil Chocolate Cake, that mimics my favorite gelato flavor!
I'd highly recommend this chocolate cookbook. It has just about any type of chocolate recipe you could ask for, yet has many recipes you won't find anywhere else. If you're looking for a book with lots of quick-to-prepare recipes, this won't be the one. But the end result of each recipe will be worth the time spent to create it.
Thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for providing an advance review copy of this cookbook. My opinions are my own.
Chocolate Lover delivers exactly what it says: a collection of 60 decadent treats curated by Michele Song. Released 17th Sept 2024 by Chronicle Books, it's 240 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This book really is an encyclopedic collection of all-things-chocolate. There are fancy chocolate-y things as well as accessible basic anyone-can-make-it things. There are classics both easy and challenging for all occasions.
The recipes are grouped roughly thematically: sweet treats, cookies, brownies & bars, snacking cakes, celebration cakes, pies & tarts, morning treats, fried/chilled, and bakery favorites. Each recipe includes an introduction, yields, description, equipment, ingredients listed bullet-style in a sidebar, and step by step specific directions which are clear and easy to follow. Unit measures are in imperial (American) measurements with metric in parentheses (yay!). Alternatives and special info is included in highlighted in text bars in each recipe.
Most of the ingredients will be available at any well stocked grocery store; there may be some items which will require a specialty supplier or online source (vanilla paste and a few other items, but not many).
Five stars. The photography is superb. This is a classic and comprehensive collection and will be a perennial go-to. This would be a great choice for public or school library acquisition, home use, or gifting to a foodie enthusiast friend.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Rating: 5 stars
***Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review***
Very clear instructions on recipes, great tips/description on varieties of chocolate/cocoa and explanation on melting chocolate (both Double-Boiler Method and Microwave).
Index Layout: (in parenthesis my favorite choice for each section)
Sweet Treats (Malted Hot Cocoa Mix)
Cookies (Espresso Chocolate Rye Sables)
Brownies and Bars (Chewy Mochi Brownies)
Snacking Cakes (Chocolate Ricotte Marble Pound Cake)
Celebration Cakes (Strawberry White Chocolate Chantilly Cake)
Pies and Tarts (Chocolate Banana Cream Pie)
Morning Treats (Lemon Raspberry White Chocolate Muffins)
Fried and Chilled (Chocolate Mascarpone Custard Doughnuts)
Bakery Favorites (Black Sesame Cocoa Milk Bread)
I think what I loved best is the variety for each section. While I enjoy chocolate as much as the next person, I also didn't want double/triple/death by chocolate options. There are a lot of great low pressure recipes. Also only a few recipes w/ tree nuts **which is a bonus for me (darn allergies)**
Great cookbook for beginners/moderate skill set.
If you love chocolate this is definitely for you. This is filled with lots of amazing recipes that fun and easy to make not to mention yummy.

Michele Song’s 𝘊𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 is an impressive cookbook chock full of delicious dessert recipes. After giving information on different chocolate and cocoa varieties and tips and tricks for working with the ingredients, the book goes into several categories of confections—sweet treats, cookies, brownies, snacking cakes, celebration cakes, pies & tarts, morning treats, fried & chilled, and bakery favorites. Each recipe is accompanied by a beautiful, appetizing-looking image. It all looks so good! Thank you to Chronicle Books for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
An excellent collection of recipes that combines basic ready-for-beginner instructions and more advanced pastry-school style sets.
I'm excited to start trying these in the kitchen right away.
Her instructions and explanations are thorough and easy to understand, making it easy for even the most novice baker to create delicious treats. I appreciate that she uses both cup measurements and weights for her ingredients. The photos are gorgeous! You can practically smell the heavenly chocolaty goodness.
She offers great tips and tricks too, like sifting the add ins (like chopped cookies and broken pretzels) for your chocolate bark to get rid of dust, making the finished product much prettier.
I’m a cookie freak, and I was excited to try her Strawberry and Cream cookies and the Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate shortbread. Both of them were delicious! And don’t even get me started on the White Chocolate Chai Doodles! There’s even a section devoted to snacking cakes that are perfect for when a regular size cake is just too much.
Her use of unusual ingredients like goat cheese, miso and rye flour is exciting. But there are a lot of more traditional recipes too. There’s something for every chocoholic in this book. And Ms. Song’s clear and concise instructions will make you feel like a baking pro!
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Must love chocolate...
The essential chocolate cookbook. How to prepare and cook and bake with chocolate.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a chocolate-y dessert or treat.
Just say yes!
Highly recommend.
As an avid (amateur) baker, I am always looking for new recipes to bake and Chocolate Lover by Michele Song is packed full of delicious, chocolatey, unique and easy to follow recipes! The majority of my baking is enjoyed by my husband and 3 kids, and these recipes are, as I said before, unique but still pair well to a child's palate. I didn't have to worry about someone not liking what I made.
The beginning of the book was also filled with tips and tricks, and a guide to learn more about chocolate and all its varieties. This is especially helpful as I hope to pass down my baking love to my children and teaching them while we make yummy treats is a major plus.
I can't wait to purchase this cookbook for my collection so I can continue to make the recipes I didn't get a chance to yet!
Thank you Netgally, Michele Song and Chronicle Books for the ARC!!
Holy moly, if you like chocolate has Michele Song written a cookbook for you! This well-designed book begins with a detailed explanation of the various types of chocolates as well as how to work with them. Each recipe was paired with a delectable picture and clear directions. The beauty of the recipes throughout Song’s book is that there are some takes on familiar items. Under the heading of sweet treats, there are goodies such as Strawberry Matcha White Chocolate Bark and Malted Hot Chocolate. Under brownies and bars, Ultimate Millionaire Pretzel Bars have a twist by using a miso caramel layer for an extra depth of flavor. Each recipe was a delight to read and a sight to see. This is one to go back to again and again for the surprises inside.
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
The title is perfect haha! I liked that this cookbook provided so many tips for success in the beginning before getting to recipes! However, I would consider this book for intermediate level bakers! If you're committed and really want to start from ground zero, then you will enjoy these recipes!
This is a gorgeous chocolate book! The intro section has lots of chocolate specific info and how tos. There are 60 recipes in 9 chapters, so none of the chapters are very long: Sweet Treats, Cookies, Brownies and Bars, Snacking Cakes, Celebration Cakes, Pies and Tarts, Morning Treats, Fried and Chilled, and Bakery Favorites.
Every recipe has a mouth-watering color photo. Some of the recipes have more unique ingredients alongside the chocolate: things like rye flour, miso, tahini, black sesame. Others just sound incredibly delicious, or amp up a familiar recipe either by making a combo (Pumpkin Chocolate Babka), or adding chocolate to a beloved classic (Chocolate Frangipane Croissants).
It's been a while since I saw a chocolate cookbook I felt had unique ideas, so I'm very excited for this.
Michele Song created a beautiful book for you or the chocolate lover in your life.. I loved that the book started with a love letter to Chocolate. It then went on to school the reader on how to treat chocolate, pantry ingredients, different equipment needed and a lot more great information. Then the recipes started, the delicious photos popped up throughout and my mouth was watering.
I look forward to first making the Very Best Chocolate Chunk Cookies this weekend and then the ultimate Millionaire Pretzel Bars. I also know of a few people who will love this book as much as I do.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.
This is a very dangerous book to flip through before lunch, LOL! Now I want some chocolate baked goodness!!
The cookbook is obviously a labor of love by someone who loves chocolate. :D (I imagine we'd get along great, haha.) I love that it not only includes photograph(s) for every. single. recipe (a rarity in cookbook-land, it seems like), but also some unique ingredients and flavor combinations. (I'm looking at you, pistachios, miso, matcha, buckwheat, and buttermilk. And no, those aren't all in one recipe, but spread across several!)
I also learned a few new things, such as how/why to "bloom" cocoa (to bring out flavors) and caramelize white chocolate! (I think caramelizing white chocolate would indeed make me like it better, haha.)
I'm especially excited to try the crispy chocolate buttermilk waffles and the chocolate stout rye Bundt. (Insert token reference to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" here.)
A fantastic and inspiring collection of recipes, photos, tips, and tricks that will be an invaluable resource to any baker, from amateur to pro.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
