This review isn't going to be so much on Anne of Green Gables--which is one of my favorite books in the world--because I don't think I could say enough positive things on this book. But, THIS edition, while I wasn't actually able to read any of the extras--was able to see what the extras will be.
So to avoid spoilers, I'll just name a couple.
The first one will be a map of Avonlea. I cannot WAIT to see what this looks like!
Another insert is a recipe card for raspberry cordial. Now I've made this before due to the Anne of Green Gables Cookbook. But I'm so excited to see if this is the same recipe and to give it a try!
The other things I want to read are the letters between Anne and Diana.
The cover is beautiful and if this is like any of the other books done by Heller, I'll be pre-ordering this one for its October release.
This book is a classic and one that could be read over and over! This book is like being able to reminisce with your best friend!
Title: **Review of Anne of Green Gables Special Edition**
As a huge fan of "Anne of Green Gables," I was eagerly anticipating this special edition, which promises to include replicas of thirteen items from the story, such as notes between Anne and Diana, the Debating Club program, and Marilla’s recipes for raspberry cordial and currant wine. These items, recreated with charming handwriting and historical detail, are meant to transport readers to the idyllic Prince Edward Island.
Unfortunately, the advanced reader copy (ARC) I received was just a PDF of the original book and did not include any of these special features. Without the unique elements that make this edition special, it’s impossible to provide a comprehensive review.
I hope to obtain a complete copy when it is published and provide an actual review then. For now, asking us to review an ARC without the included objects that set this edition apart seems counterproductive. Therefore, based on the ARC provided, I can only give it one star..
I love Barbara Heller’s classics with letters, and I’m sure I will love this one just based on the introduction alone and seeing the research she put into it, but seeing as how we were not provided with any PDFs of what the inserts will look like, I’m afraid I can only rate this four stars because those documents are the main contribution Keller makes to LM Montgomery’s work.
A classic for a reason, everyone should read this book. We meet Anne as she is being adopted by siblings Marilla and Matthew, who were expecting to be sent a boy to help on the farm. Anne's wide-eyed optimism and fanciful imagination soon convince them to adopt her and bring her into their home. Anne, who has been an orphan all her life, throws herself into normal life with enthusiasm, bringing everyone around her into her sphere as she finally starts experiencing life. A book I have read over and over and will continue to over my life, this is one that I cannot recommend loudly enough.
"Anne of Green Gables: The Complete Novel, Featuring the Characters' Letters and Mementos" is an enchanting gem for any fan of L. M. Montgomery's timeless classic. This special edition, lovingly curated by Barbara Heller, offers a delightful journey into Anne’s world through meticulously crafted replicas of thirteen cherished items.
Each piece, from the heartfelt notes between Anne and Diana to the Debating Club program featuring Gilbert Blythe’s memorable recitation, is recreated with exquisite attention to detail and charming handwriting. Marilla’s recipes for raspberry cordial and currant wine add a nostalgic touch that transports readers straight to Green Gables.
This deluxe volume transforms the beloved narrative into a tangible, interactive experience, breathing new life into familiar scenes and characters. It’s a beautiful keepsake that celebrates the joy of paper mementos and the enduring magic of Anne’s story. Perfect for collectors and dreamers, this edition is a heartfelt tribute to a literary treasure.
It didn’t actually contain any images of the “mementos,” so I can’t review anything about it. It’s a cool idea, but if advance readers can’t even see the letters and pullouts that are going to be part of the experience, it’s kind of pointless to review an ARC of it, because I’d only be reviewing the original story, as that is all that is included. If my library gets the copy I’ll give it an actual review on my Goodreads, but until then I’m disappointed as the blurb did not say we wouldn’t get to see what the materials were.
I imagine the hard copy version of this special edition is truly lovely, with the original story plus pockets that include recreated memorabilia of the characters, such as notes Anne and her best friend passed at school, recipes for currant wine and raspberry cordial, the debate club's program. What a creative way to make this beloved story come alive!
Beautiful. Everything about this was beautiful. Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the download,
The original novel, with no edits. I pulled out a copy of the original novel to compare and it's exactly the same, with exceptions for chapter formatting. The ARC copy I received did not include any of the additional letters or features which this edition advertises. The biblography looks extensive and it seems like a well researched project. I cannot tell if the letters and mementos will be included in a pocket or tucked into the book but it definitely seems interesting and I wish I had the opportunity to see them.
* Thanks to the publisher Chronicle Books via Netgalley for the ebook.
This edition is a beautifully formatted and sure to be an inspiring treasure for Anne fans. The introduction by Barbara Heller, explaining not only her own love for orphan literature (especially Anne of Green Gables) but also the life of the author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. I could easily see how her difficult childhood inspired the book and I had no idea she struggled with mental health and died by suicide. Also surprising, but in a much better way, was how prolific her writing was. Montgomery not only wrote the Anne of Green Gables series but hundreds of short stories and thirteen other novels!
I wish the ARC I received showed the inserts that make this book a unique and interesting edition. I would have loved to see the map of Avonlea, the Exhibition Program, and letters. Thankfully, there is a notes section in the back where Heller shares about how she did her research on the additions like her historical recipes that she gleaned the cordial recipe insert from.
In all, I think any Anne fan would enjoy having this on their shelf alongside their likely already well read copy.
Thank you Net Galley for this ARC of Anne of Green Gables! Of course, this is a classic tale of our favorite orphan finding her forever home with the Cuthberts in Green Gables. The story is not new, but the arrangement of the classic LM Montgomery novel is perfect! I loved the surprise letters at the end of the book. Though I received an e-copy, I believe the hard copy will be a beautiful collection to add to your shelves. 5/5
I absolutely adore Anne, she's one of my favorite characters from any book. This edition of the book is stunning, and I'm really excited to add it to my personal collection. The map, cordial recipe, and the letters to Diana are wonderful additions that I appreciate. I think these editions are marvelous, and any classic book lover should definitely have them.
I'm a massive admirer of all things Anne of Green Gables. So, when NetGalley presented the opportunity to snag an early copy of the special edition with keepsakes, I pounced on it eagerly. The introduction was a lovely nod to the adoration so many children hold for the Anne of Green Gables stories, yet it also offered a more mature perspective.
Towards the end of the digital book, there's a list of additional materials, including newspaper clippings and appendices. The appendices contain details about the letters and keepsakes featured in the hardcover version. The downside of reading the electronic version is that the replicas from the story aren't included in digital form. It would have been wonderful to have everything at hand. Nonetheless, I'm certain they're delightful, and those who opt for the hardcover will be in for a treat.
Barbara Heller's incorporation of Anne of Green Gables into the Handwritten Classics series is sure to bring joy to fans of both Heller and Anne.
I absolutely adored this book. The cast of characters are diverse and so lovable each in their own rights. A very well crafted story about being fearlessly yourself in spite of how odd others might find you. I think it’s a story that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime. Highly recommend! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my review.
Pros: Anne of Green Gables is a classic (and one of my all-time favorite books), so I will not comment on the story itself but will instead focus on this new edition! Throughout this PDF arc I could see notes to where inserts of characters's letters and mementos would be inserted, so I have a good idea of how much fun this book will be to have in a physical format. I thought the notes on the letters and mementos at the end added a lot to the book as well.
Cons: I wish I could have seen the notes and mementos! However, I understand that that would be difficult to show in arc format. I think this will probably be a 5-star book in a physical format, but I feel like I can only give it four stars here because I could not experience what I assume will be the extra special parts of the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the opportunity to read this book.
I have a large collection of Anne of Green Gables books and when the print version of this book is released I will definitely buy it! The introduction by Barbara Heller is wonderful and it appears that the additional materials will be a fantastic addition to the book. it's a bit difficult to engage with the book as an e-book, so I'd encourage anyone who really loves this novel (or wants to fall in love with it for the first time!) purchases it in print.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are my own.
I loved Anne of Green Gables when I read it last year, so I was curious about this edition. Though it's a digital copy, I think it's beautiful. The physical hardback must be even more beautiful. I think this will be worthwhile for collectors, it's a lovely edition.
What a lovely copy of Anne of Green Gables. Bringing this classic to life in a new and fun way! I think the physical copy of this will just be so special.
This special edition of the full Anne of Green Gables novel includes collectible items such as letters "written" by the characters and other mementos. Now... what I got my hands on is the eBook and I can see I will need to get the physical book when it comes out in October - which is perfect, as Anne says: "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers." The eBook gives a description of the extras included in the print version and includes details on the research and history involved in creating these items, such as: a map of Anne's world, the Lord's Prayer card, recipes, Diana's note to Anne when she was forbidden to speak with her folded in a pinwheel shape like a "puzzle purse," Anne's note with recreated children's handwriting based on L.M. Montgomery's early written letters, the Queen's pass list as it would have appeared in the newspaper, and more! Barbara Heller, who oversaw the creation of all these items has done the same for Little Women and Pride and Prejudice... I am going to have to check those out, too!
