Seraphina is a nice mermaid but very insecure to her role. Neela, her best friend and companion, is a stronger character that I really liked. We get other characters including Blu, Ling and many others.
There is betrayal, death and action...a small dash of romance...loyalty and friends...all mixed together is a "Save the World" adventure.
I will read the next one. I am curious how it ends but I do warn new readers, be sure to have patience and focus when you start reading this!

Deep Blue by Jennifer Donnelly is an exciting start to the Waterfire Saga! It’s a fun and fast-paced adventure following Serafina, a mermaid princess, who is thrust into a dangerous mission to save her underwater world. The world-building is rich, with unique mythology and a vivid underwater setting. I loved how the story blends action, magic, and friendship as Serafina and her friends uncover dark secrets and face off against enemies. It’s a great read for fans of fantasy with strong female characters, though it can feel a bit predictable at times. Overall, a solid, enjoyable start!

An underwater tale of mermaids written for a young adult audience - Seraphina, the heir of this watery kingdom, must save the sea. If you like adventure stories and rich worldbuilding, you should give this a try - but keep in mind that this is the first in a series!

I expected the romance to take a lot of place in the story but fortunately it absolutely didn't. Sera doesn't spend all of her waking days thinking about the one she is set to marry. Instead, she sets off on an adventure filled with dangerous events and interesting meetings. The characters are kind of immature, but they do seem to grow with time and experience.

Mermaids are fascinating creatures and I love reading how different author's build an underwater world. Donnelly's offering is complicated, yet at times, felt like a glorified The Little Mermaid, Disney-style.
While I was attracted to the story, there was times when I was rolling my eyes with the puns and obvious situations. Overall, if you're a die-hard mermaid fan, and especially if you're a juvenile, you'll most likely love this one!

I love mermaid stories, but this one just wasn't for me. I'm not a fan of all the made-up words, and like more action in my stories.

I love mermaids and I like Donally's writing, but I had a hard time engaging with this one. Might try again in the future.

This was a great first book in a series about mermaids, Atlantia, Abbadon and more.
I found it to be fun, and as the chapters were short I flew though the book.
There's a glossary at the back which explains what terms mean and who characters are. I found this to be really helpful.
I love the fact that the main character Serafina has a pet octopuss. That's just so frickin cute!
I don't often hear a lot about mermaid books, but I always feel I was meant to be a mermaid myself, so that's probably another reason why I loved this book.
I've already ordered the sequel and I can't wait to see where it leads.
If you want a simple yet fun mermaid read, then this is for you!
