The characters are ultimately likeable (and hateable, where they should be), I adore the raccoon, and the magic is super fun. The sexy bits were hot. But with all that, I found the romance too slow, held up by more and more and more miscommunication and metaphorical dancing around. The male lead comes across as a bit of a Golden Retriever personality, and female lead confused me as she at times seemed naive and at other times jaded, at times witty and smart and other times entirely the opposite, just depending on what suited the story. I enjoyed the read, but would love to see something by the author a little more fast-paced.
I really wanted to like this, the description sounded so fun but sadly I don't think it was for me. Don't know if it was the author's writing style or the structure of it. Cassie and Seth had been friends since childhood and due to some bullying on his part they no longer spoke. Fast forward to when she takes over he grandmas house and Seth come to her asking for help to control his werewolf impulses. That's when Cassie discovers she is actually a witch. Great so far right, but then what tries to come off as banter it's more like bickering about everything between them. They ramble a lot and just go in circles in my opinion. I did like when she starts to embrace the magic that she can do but that also felt a bit off. She hears this inner voice that just tells her what to do and just like that she can create a potion for anything and everything. Then the rest of the story is just them talking dirty but trying to avoid having sex. I like spice in my romance books but this did not did it for me. The best parts were the living appliances and her raccoon familiar Pod that was not in even half of the book.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.
Weird, funny, slow burn. The paranormal elements are enhanced by a contemporary, small town setting. It’s a slower burn than I usually prefer, but still has a great payoff.
I'm thrilled by the creative blend of science fiction and supernatural elements this book offers. Stein crafts an intriguing story that takes the werewolf genre and turns it on its head by incorporating unique scientific twists that are both clever and engaging. The characters in this book are wonderfully complex and dynamic. Their development throughout the narrative really underscores their struggles and triumphs, making their journeys captivating to follow. The interactions between the characters, especially in the context of dealing with a 'hungry werewolf,' are filled with tension, humor, and a touch of romance, which adds a rich layer to the story.
This novel is a bit of a slow burn but entertaining to say the less. I didn’t enjoy the beginning with the bullying in high school. I didn’t enjoy the miscommunication. It frustrated me at some points of the book
I loved this book. And the cover is so pretty! I could not put this book down. The plot was very interesting and the romance was just as good.
This book has a fabulous cover! Don't you love it? Is this a Paranormal Romance? Is this a RomCom? Does it matter? Let me tell you, I have thoughts about certain parts of the book that I need to discuss in a book club setting!
Since the tagline of the book is (to paraphrase) What We Do in the Shadows meets Gilmore Girls, I'm categorizing this book as a Paranormal RomCom. Heavier on the Rom than the Com, but a good amount of Com.
Now then important things you should know about the book. The prologue features an incident of our male lead being a jerk and humiliating Cassandra, our female lead, very publically in high school by making fun of her size. For me, and this is just me, I don't have a problem with a high schooler saying something mean about another high schooler, this is something that happens every day all day. I don't like it in my fiction when the female lead says terrible things about her looks to herself. Cassandra doesn't do this so the book works for me.
I found the ending satisfying. I thought it was going to go one way when I started reading the book but it went another way that was actually better. I love the magic and the world it takes place in and I would have enjoyed more of the world, the magical rules are really fun and different.
This book is like when you have your phone in portrait mode to take a picture. We spend this book with Cassandra and Seth in focus and getting more in focus as the story goes on while the side characters and the setting are a bit blurry. I hope that there is a second book in this series so I can see more of this world.
Throughout the book, I felt like our main characters acted much younger than their age of twenty-seven. Especially, Seth, I decided maybe what I was supposed to understand was because he became a werewolf, and that slowed his maturity. And maybe since Cassandra doesn't know an important fact about herself, her growth is also stunted.
My rating for this book is 4 stars, if you read it let me know, I'd love to talk about a couple of spoilery things!
I rec'd an ARC from the publisher, all my opinions are my own!
How to Help a Hungry Werewolf is like an adorable grown-up fairy tale! High school did not end on good terms for best friends, Cassie and Seth. When Cassie returns to their small town after her grandmother’s death, she is faced with none other than Seth. And surprise! He’s a vampire…and apparently she’s a witch?!? Will Cassie be able to reconcile this new info and the two friends let bygones be bygones to heal their relationship? This is a really fun paranormal romance read about second chance and moving forward!
Review is posted on Goodreads and will be on Instagram ahead of the publication date!
Conflicted on this one.
The rekindling of a friendship and the banter between Seth and Cassie was sweet and fun at the beginning of the book. Albeit, there were times when I was a bit confused about things that took place because the way they were described didn't make sense.
And, once the sexual energy built to a point that was uncontrollable that both characters blamed on "werewolf mating urges", the book focused solely on sex. Which, while it is a romance, I don't know that the same relationship-building and connection from the beginning of the story carried through. It felt like it devolved into a horny teenage erotic wet dream and I kept waiting for the story to get to the point.
The "antagonist" was more the sexual energy between Cassie and Seth, as though they were battling it and trying to find a cure, rather than the other werewolves that were briefly mentioned at the beginning of the book and barely again until the very end when the "climax" of the book occurred. But, the real focus was all the other climaxes occurring before and after the short battle between Cassie and her high school nemeses. And, once Cassie won, the sappy confessions between Cassie and Seth didn't fit the rest of their relationship.
I am happy about the HEA and loved the idea of their supernatural sanctuary given all the other things that happened throughout the book. But I think the story could have been richer with less focus on the sex and more on the relationship as well as the build-up to Cassie facing her past bullies to overcome her past.
It was my first paranormal romance. I genuinely enjoyed it. First of all, I love fall, and there's nothing better than a book that gives you Halloween vibes. Secondly, werewolf romance has become my favourite genre this year and here you will find plenty of wolves)) and other mystical creatures. The book is fast paced, very light, sometimes funny.
The MMC is a cinnamon roll. The FMC gives black cat vibes, duh she is a witch.
In general, I recommend to read this book during Halloween.
Well this was really bad for me because I hate not finishing a book but this book was too much for me. The fat-shaming, her constant self sabotage and more. Also the way the writer describes everything and how I feel she is not getting anywhere. I have to be honest because I was really excited to read this book, the concept is good, the idea of a Paranormal romance with a werewolf is something I really enjoy; but I feel this book was too much for me. If you don’t mind anything that i just shared here, this book is for you, this book isn’t for me and that is ok.
I received this book from NetGalley, thank you St. Andrew’s Press!
Monsters✅
Slow-Burn✅
Friends (except he’s a real dick in the prologue) to Lovers✅
Plus Size FMC ✅
Those are four of my favorite things! I will say, the prologue had me real scared though, I don't love a bestie turned bully situation, but there was context given later that cleared things up a bit.
Cassie and Seth are a great combination of sickly sweet, funny, and sexy. The magic in this felt whimsical and fun which was a nice change from dark and scary! The whole book is purely ridiculous but if you go into for a good time and not taking things seriously, you’re set.
Part of me loved that it was 90% them in their own little bubble and part of me wanted to see them interacting with the town more, but regardless I was entertained
Good spooky season read!
This was a fun paranormal romance. The magic plus werewolf and others was enjoyable. Its a quick beach book.
When Cassandra returns to settle her grandmother's estate, she faces her former best friend and source of her greatest high school bullying trauma, Seth. Cassandra makes new discoveries about herself and new powers. Seth has changed and needs her help. She remembers how close of friends they were before he hurt her previously and offers her assistance. This is a different kind of paranormal romance with more friendship leading to a relationship. I read this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is 100 percent a good read for fans of What We Do in the Shadows.
Cassandra and Seth had me all over the place, I was laughing, I was annoyed at times, I wanted to throw my kindle across the room at other times.
This is my first book by the author, and it will not be my last. I look forward to reading more from this author!
*Thank you Net Galley for this ARC. I am leaving an honest and voluntary review*
This a cozy paranormal romance featuring former childhood best friends. Cassie and Seth fell out with one another when Seth befriended Cassie's bullies in high school. After a terrible prank goes wrong, Cassie and Seth never spoke to one another until she returns after inheriting her grandmother's house. Cassie never understood she was a witch until Seth stumbled back into her life needing help with his werewolf-ness. It's a slow burn romance but once it spills over to them giving into the attraction it's spicy. If you crave a good cozy romance with paranormal elements this book is for you.
This was a fun and fantastic read. I absolutely adored the characters, how relatable everything was, the magic, the humor and definitely the spice! I look forward to sharing this book with patrons and romance book clubs!
I would describe this book as a cozy paranormal romance. It’s over the top silly, in a good way. The FMC spent so much time denying her feelings for the MMC, that I questioned if she even liked him. It was too drawn out for me. The story outside of their romance was compelling and I wish more was done with it. Around the middle of the book the plot just kind of goes out the window and doesn’t reappear until the last 20 or so pages. I wish we got to see more of Pod.
I hated that the MMC back tracks on his reason for fat shaming her and she’s just fine with it. I think she let him off too easy. It’s a cute fall read and I have my fingers crossed for more in this series.
My favorite book is by far the raccoon! I would classify this book as a cozy romantacy novel. It was fun, cheesy, and ridiculous. Full disclosure there is bullying at the beginning of this relationship that took place in high school. So if you're not into that then I would skip this novel.
This story is an entertaining paranormal rom-com. It's a bit of a slow burn but gets fairly spicy, and includes the miscommunication trope. It also has some high school bullying at the beginning of the story that may bother some people. However, it is really the only instance of bullying from the MMC and is explained later. I had a fun time reading this story and it was interesting to see the author's take on the various supernatural beings and the magic that the FMC can create/cook. One aspect that I loved the most was the witty internal dialogue and banter from both the FMC and MMC characters. Although I think some people may see it as more juvenile, I thought it was entertaining. I also loved the raccoon, Pod, and wish there had been more of him in the book. There were a couple of aspects that frustrated me, for instance, the miscommunication/lack of communication. It felt like it got to a point that it bordered on ridiculous. Another thing that was a bit off was the fact that the first part of the book had a certain cutesy fun feel and then the last half had a bit of a different feel, the sex scenes were very spicy and seemed to take more of the spotlight compared to the main plot of the story. Overall, it was a fun read and I would be interested in reading the next story in this series.
