I was unsure about giving this author another chance after feeling just ok about her first book, but the premise of this one really intrigued me. While all of T.J. Newman's books revolve around plane crashes/accidents, this one felt different because it wasn't super focused on the accident itself, and was more about the aftermath of a terrible plane crash. I don't know much about nuclear incidents more than the surface level but I did not feel like I needed more than that to understand what's going on and what's at stake in this book. I had a pretty good time but I never felt connected to any of the characters and I didn't really care about what happened to them. They all felt very 2D and it was hard to figure out who was who at some points. I'm not sure if this author will ever be for me, despite exclusively writing about a topic that absolutely scares me. Maybe the third time's the charm?
Wow! T.J. Newman does it again. This was great. Sad and tear felt. But so good. It will definitely have you on the edge of your seat and you won’t be able to put it down until you finish the last page.
Such a thrill ride! It started with a bang and kept going. I loved the way the community worked together to help each other and keep their town from being wiped off the map.
TALK ABOUT READING A BOOK AND BEING ON THE VERGE OF A FULL BLOWN PANIC ATTACK! This book read like a fast paced action movie. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book. WOW! This author writes such real life, high stress, insane situations. I eat up anything and everything that she writes! Well done!
Who would guess that a book about a nuclear power plant struck by a plane would give me all of the feelings and be so good?! Not me! I read Newman’s other suspense books and found myself confused throughout. This one read easier. I liked the multiple views we saw. The short chapters helped. I breezed through this one. What a story.
I thought T.J. Newman's (much-touted) debut was pretty good. Was it the blockbuster everyone said it was? I didn't think so. But it was fun. Then came her follow-up, Drowning, and that blew me away. I thought it would be hard to follow up that, and then came news that a new book was coming a year later (unlike the two-year gap between the first two) and the results are... about as I suspected. They're good, not great. Out of her three, this is probably the weakest one. Taking a macro approach and focusing on a large town, I feel like we never really get to dig deep into the characters besides their main talking and thinking points. The two who are best explored are also savagely dragged through the book for effect at the ending. Did that work? A little. I felt a little something stirring in my chest by the book's end, but I also felt like it could be more. Newman's approach of being the 'Grisham of the Skies' definitely sets her apart and I will continue to read her books, but I'll approach the next one with a little more trepidation.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
I have enjoyed TJ Newman's last two books, so I was very excited for this one. I don't think it had the same thrill that the other 2 had, but I still enjoyed the read.
Fantastic! T.J. Newman is now my go-to author for this kind of edge of your seat, propulsive thriller. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Worst Case Scenario, true to author's style, was easily a bingeable read. I loved Drowning so much, but this one just didn't do it as much for me. It was missing that rush of adrenaline I had from her previous ones. Read more like an entire season of Chicago Fire looped into one. I felt like I was invested into other stories more so than others.
There was also a lot of nuclear technical information which was fascinating and scary. It is still a good suspenseful read, especially if you wish to read something that translates to TV eventually.
T.J. Newman is a great airline action writer. I’ve enjoyed all her books. This one is no exception. It was a wild ride from the first page. I’ll continue to read her books.
Action began on the first page and did not let up. If you are looking for a fast paced thriller that you can't put down, this is the book.
She did it again. My hell, this was amazing. T.J. has a talent for writing charactera and stories that immerse you into the story and make you feel like it is actually happening. Sucks for my anxiety, bc she writes disaster thrillers 😂 I will always be in first in line for her books.
More like 3.5 stars for me! While I always find Newman’s books propulsive I found myself skimming some parts in this one. There were a few too many things going on and I would have preferred there to be the deeper focus on a single thing as in previous books. Still good, but my least favorite so far.
Imagine the worst possible disaster and that’s the premise of this book. What if a passenger plane plummeted from the sky and parts of it hit a nuclear power plant? The result could make Chernobyl look like a minor accident. Especially since the power plant could send its toxic waste down the Mississippi, decimating most of the country.
When such a disaster becomes a potential reality for the small town of Waketa, MN, the experts at the plant, the local rescue teams and even the President work to try and prevent Armageddon. Newman keeps readers on the edge of their seats as the events of the plummeting plane and the crash unfold. Then the extent of the destruction and the measures needed to be taken to prevent contamination become the focus. Compounding the damage to the power plant are other areas affected by the rest of the fuselage and debris as the plane broke apart.
What the book highlights is the reality of people putting the well-being of others before themselves. Like the firefighters on 9/11, those committed to helping in a calamity, know that they are putting themselves in harm’s way. Their commitment to helping outweighs self-preservation. But in Newman’s book, even if everyone does all they can, the town of Waketa and most of the United States, could become a wasteland.
This is an edge-of-your seat, suspenseful novel that showcases the real people who show up when faced with trauma. One of the most touching side stories involves the attempted rescue of a lone child. While the power plant drama takes center stage, the personal story of a little boy needing deliverance from potential death, is tender and moving. With so much at stake, readers will be moved by the extraordinary measures to save even one young life.
Riveting and captivating, this is one for those who like high octane suspense.
Worst Case Scenario is a gripping psychological thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish! T.J. Newman dives straight into the action, creating an intense, fast-paced story filled with high-stakes drama. Her detailed research shines through, especially in the plane crash scenes and the nuclear crisis, which feel incredibly real and well-executed.
Told through multiple perspectives, the story lets each character's background and relationships unfold naturally, bringing real depth to the plot. There’s no single villain here—only heroes facing immense challenges.
This book took me on an emotional ride! It’s shocking, heart-pounding, uplifting, heartbreaking, and inspiring all at once. I’ve read all of Newman’s books, and this one stands out as her best work yet. Highly recommend!
This one was five stars because I couldn't put it down. I inhaled it over the last couple of days and it was like time stood still while I was madly turning the pages to find out what happened next. It takes place over 16 hours and the tension is palatable. We get to know a handful of people and their community in a short amount of time. I'm still buzzing from the wild, terrifying ride. It very much is a worst case scenario played out. I can't help but wonder how would I function under a similar pressure.
Thanks to the publisher for sharing a copy with me. All opinions are my own.
I love TJ Newman and I have loved reading her Falling and Drowning book. This book was no exception, but it scared me to death reading it. I had a lot of anxiety thinking if this would happen in my town, which is a small town similar to this one. Great book, quick read, but the only reason I didn't give it a complete five star was the anxiety I had reading it. Worth reading, but enjoyed her other two titles more.
Literally anything by TJ Newman is gonna catch you from the very first page and hook you until the very end. Idk how she does this but I CANNOT stop reading these books once I start! You are a genius TJ! Great job again!

Worst Case Scenario is an unputdownable thriller by T.J. Newman. This book is an adrenaline rush from start to finish! Newman masterfully combines high-stakes action, heart-pounding suspense, and deeply human characters to craft a thriller that’s impossible to put down. The story plunges you into an intense series of events that feel terrifyingly plausible, and every chapter ramps up the tension to another level.
Newman’s background in aviation shines through, making the details grippingly authentic and the stakes feel all too real. Her characters are complex, flawed, and relatable, making it easy to root for them even in the darkest moments. If you’re looking for a thrill ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning pages late into the night, Worst Case Scenario is a must-read!
