I had some pretty strong feelings at the end of this story and said something rude to the author out loud to my husband. She was not supposed to make me cry. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book and heavily invested in every single character. As a child/young adult, I always loved a good disaster movie, and as an older adult who rarely watches TV or movies, finding a book that reels you in and keeps you on the edge throughout is rare!
This is book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time reading it. The characters were so well developed and I fell in love with several. Loved the action mixed with true character development.
With her third novel, Newman has cemented her voice in an exciting and emerging new genre created in part by her own self.
The premise of the novel is an exciting and terrifying one, and Newman manages to sustain a level of tension throughout the novel. The rapid-fire chapters build on each other, and Newman is smart in ending and starting them in an appropriate manner, balancing the different characters and never losing sight of any of them. The novel's pacing is fast, never easing up unless for the occasional emotional beat, and while that can leave some readers desiring for a break from the anxiety, the pace fits the whole scenario of this novel--the whole world is in grave danger.
Newman's writing is also concise, aware of the type of thriller she's writing. Although this sort of disaster/climate thriller could easily have only focused on said disaster, Newman attempts to create characters to root and care for. Again, though, Newman introduces a variety of them, and while that can help the novel's pace (as the reader has multiple disastrous situations to embark on) it does some disservice to their characterization. The emotional beats work for the most part, though, for a thriller moving at break-neck speed.
There's some dialogue and comical bits that did not work for me. They read awkward and clunky, but their goal to alleviate the tension was successful, albeit not necessarily in their intended manner. There's also a minor romance subplot that felt jarring to the novel's tone and personally just did not work for me.
The way Newman wraps up this story contains some moments of the previously mentioned awkward tone shift, but overall does a good job wrapping up the characters' storylines and leaving the readers satisfied.
Overall, a very fun, tense, and surprisingly emotional novel. I will for sure check out anything else that Newman decides to write.
Like her previous novels, this book is action packed from the beginning to the end. However, I didn’t really connect with the characters this time and had a harder time following this story.
This is the third book I have read from this author, and I have yet to be disappointed. This is an adrenaline packed story just like her other two. She has turned into an auto read author for me. This one was more technical than her other books which is why I am giving four stars as that isn’t my interest, but it is clear that she did a ton of research to write this book. Thanks for the ARC, and great job, T.J. Newman!
This is my first time reading a book by this author, and it is definitely entertaining. The story immediately starts right out the gate with a worst case scenario and doesn't stop from there. It reads like a action/suspense movie with life and death situations almost non stop. At times it felt like there was almost too many things going on and wrong at the same time. But if you are looking for entertaining suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this one's for you. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for this ARC.
When I read @tj_author books, I feel like I am sitting in the front row of a major action packed blockbuster movie. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼, her newest thriller, definitely upholds Newman's reign as the best in this genre. This is a gripping thriller that will take you on a heart-pounding journey through a potential nuclear disaster in a small Midwestern town. I finished it in ONE DAY! We start here with a heart pounding description of an aviation crash, but from there Newman crafts a story that is both intense and emotionally charged. ⠀
⠀
The plot centers around a commercial airliner that crashes into a nuclear power plant in Waketa, Minnesota, triggering a catastrophic crisis with global implications. The narrative follows ordinary people—power plant employees, firefighters, teachers, and families—who are thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Their courage, ingenuity, and determination are put to the ultimate test as they strive to prevent a meltdown that could devastate millions.⠀
Newman’s storytelling is masterful, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with relentless suspense and well-developed characters. The book’s pacing is impeccable, making it difficult to put down. The realistic portrayal of a nuclear disaster and the human response to such a crisis adds a layer of authenticity that enhances the overall impact of the story.
𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰 is a must-read for fans of thrillers. T.J. Newman continues to prove her prowess in the genre, delivering a novel that is both thrilling and thought-provoking. Pick this one up as soon as you can!
Newman does it again with a gripping, edge of your seat the ENTIRE book, nerve wracking thriller.
What’s a pilots worst fear—the absolute worst thing that could happen? A jetliner crashing into a nuclear plant has got to be at the top of the list.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve never even considered this possibility - it’s just not something I have thought of - maybe because I was so young when 9/11 happened and didn’t wonder what else could be catastrophic, maybe it’s because I don’t fly a ton, but either way this book definitely point that fear in my mind now.
This book was terrifying from not only the emergency response POV and how they tried to handle the out of control situation, but also because of the sheer amount of impact this would have on the rest of society.
I highly recommend Worst Case Scenario (and Newman’s two other books) for a fast paced, fantastic thriller read unlike any books I have read!
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
T.J.Newman never fails from Falling to Worst Case Scenario she draws me in keeps me turning the page absolutely terrified to see what the outcome would be.I still recommend Falling to people and will be adding this to my list to recommend.#netgalley #littlebrown
I want to thank everyone for this gifted copy of Worst Case Scenerio by TJ Newman!
I loved and devoured TJ’s first two books. Read working 24 hours, heart pounding, had to know what was going to happen.
This one…..I’m feeling a little disappointed. It was a good book! It had parts that made me want to read it, and I finished the last 45% in one afternoon. There was just something missing. Without spoilers, stuff started to go down, and I couldn’t help but think to myself that it was oddly similar to her other books.
It was still a great suspenseful read, but I felt like it could have had a little bit more. Maybe living in a nuclear town has tainted me a little bit on this topic lol
This book read exactly like how I expect then movie version to go. If you like reading disaster movies, you will like this book!
I appreciate how fast moving Ms. Newman keeps her books. There are a lot of main characters so I was not sure this would work well but it does. Keep with it and it's worth it. Rounded up from 4.5 stars
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC
I don't know why I love disaster novels and movies, but I do. Can't get enough of them. Worst Case Scenario is one of the great ones. Exciting all the way through, and I cared about the characters. All of T.J. Newman's novels are worth checking out.
I am a library associate and received an advance copy from #NetGalley.
How does T J Newman continue to impress me with each new novel she writes? One is just as thrilling and suspenseful as the next! That is why she has become one of my favorite new authors and I will be first in line to read anything she writes. And I cannot wait for the movie versions of her books! My thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This is a fast paced disaster novel that TJ Newman is becoming well known. The opening hooked me in immediately. I wanted to love this book as much as I loved the authors first book, Falling. There were just too many characters to keep straight and I felt disconnected from them as a reader. The detailed technical explanations about nuclear power plants may interest some but I guess that I'm in the minority and it did not. I was more interested in how the disaster affected the community and the neighbors who banded together to help each other. I especially enjoyed the author's note at the beginning of the book. I tandem read and listened to the audio book narrated by Joe Morton who was a fantastic narrator for this book.
This is a fast-paced thriller that starts off when the pilot of an airplane has a medical emergency and the plane crashes into a small Minnesota town right on top of a nuclear power plant. The story then centers around how to keep the NPP from exploding leading to a worldwide disaster. It's definitely a high stakes scenario with a lot of what-ifs, and not everyone survives leading to some sad moments.
There are probably about 10 "main" characters, as well as a lot of sub-characters, so keeping track to everyone is difficult if you don't write them down. After you get to about the 75% mark, you will finally know the characters.
I love the adrenaline rush these books give me. TJ Newman knows how to right a good thriller!
WORST CASE SCENARIO
If you’re looking for a good and sappy disaster/feel good story, this one works very well. Set in current times in small town Waketa Minnesota, a plane crashes into a nuclear plant. There’s a lot of local drama and everyday heroes. Solutions coming from unlikely sources and immediate Federal response keep it interesting and upbeat. Tension filled with time sensitive life and death decisions to be made, this book is excitement from the first page to the last.
This book is the third written by this author, all featuring airplane disasters. All present a variety of terrifying predicaments, and each one is enjoyable - if you can bear the tension!
I would like to thank NetGalley, T.J. Newman, and Little, Brown and Company for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I'm a really big fan of TJ Newman's work, I read Drowning last year and really loved how fast paced and intense it was and I was so excited to read another one by her. While this still had the intensity and fast pace that Drowning had, I felt like there was a lot of technical things about the nuclear plant and how it works that went over my head quite a bit so I felt like it took me out of the story more than I would've liked. I also didn't love the way it jumped around for the points of view- it happened so quickly and without warning that it was hard to keep track of everyone and what their role in the story was. I did really like the story overall, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping it was.
I have a love hate relationship with TJ Newman. Hate her for keeping me up all night with another page turner. Love her for creating stories and characters that draw me in. She is the queen of disaster thrillers. This one was a bit different from her previous books, but glad she spread her wings and expanded her storylines.
✨4.5 rounded up to 5!✨
Was not expecting to cry on this one but that’s exactly what happened. Then I cried some more. I should’ve known because Newman is able to write such thrilling book that absolutely heart punches you.
I was a little lost with how many characters and who was who but other than that, perfection. It was thrilling, bingeable, heart wrenching. This is my third book from TJ Newman and after this one, she just became an auto buy author for me.
Thank you NetGalley and little brown books publishing for an advance readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was good, but it didn't engage me like "Falling". I did learn an awful (and I mean awful) lot about nuclear disasters, but there was too many graphic descriptions of the carnage for my taste.
