Wooowwwweeee! This book managed to have me simultaneously on the edge of my seat and tearing up several times throughout the whole book. As a parent, this one definitely tugged at the heart strings for me a few times. I loved how the author really put a spot light on the heroes of the book, and their bravery and selflessness through each scenario. My only complaint was how technical and detailed some of the nuclear descriptions got, it took me out of the story a bit. I alternated listening and physically reading this, and the narrator did a fantastic job creating a tense atmosphere, and bringing some of Newmans scenes really to life. I’d love to see this made into a movie!
Thank you NetGalley, Little Brown & company, and Hachett Audio for my ARC and ALC in exchange for my honest feedback!
HOLY MOLY… this book should come with a prescription for Xanax! It is a wild ride and an addicting thriller! I’ve read all of T.J. Newman’s books and want them all to become movies!
In Worst Case Scenario, a commercial airplane crashes into a nuclear power plant in a rural community- triggering a huge disaster that could potentially lead to an extinction level event! The locals are faced with hard decisions as they race to save the world!
I loved this book! It’s absolutely terrifying, but also tugged at my heartstrings! And the conclusion was chef’s kiss! 👌👌👌
Four stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to the publisher and @netgalley for my ARC of Worst Case Scenario. It is out now!
Thank you, Netgalley, T. J. Newman, and Little, Brown and Company, for the ebook. This was fast-paced. I can't believe that could happen, type thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat! The beginning unfolded in my head like scenes from a movie, and I need to unsee! Perfectly pieced together.
Worst Case Scenario is TJ Newman’s third book. Like her earlier books, Falling and Drowning, this one involves a plane crash. However, this time, the plane has crashed into a nuclear power station in a small town in the US. Time is of the essence to save the power station before it implodes. At the same time, firefighters are trying to save the life of a young child who is stuck in his family’s van hanging off a bridge, covered in fuel, after it was hit by part of the plane’s debris.
The story starts off with a bang and there are some good, tense scenes. The child in the van storyline is very well done. However, I found that the nuclear power station storyline required technical descriptions that at times took me out of that part of the plot. I found myself skimming those descriptions.
Having said that, the author does a good job of weaving interesting issues and questions into the nuclear power plant plotline around family, sacrifice, community, the value of one life versus several, and motherhood.
Yes, the hype is real!! If you loved her previous novels, you'll love this one too!!! And yes, you must pick this one up today!!
If you're concerned about another plane crash story, don't be. Newman branches away from the crash, creating the same tension as her previous novels at the nuclear power plant.
What I loved:
✨Plot-driven thriller: anxiety-inducing, heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat - it is everything you want for a plot-driven story.
✨Every Day Heros: Newman really shines here. She showcases the everyday heroism of ordinary Americans who selflessly step up for the greater good. Her portrayal of first responders carrying out their duties with selflessness is a poignant reminder of their true bravery. These sections gave me chills while listening.
✨Emotional rollercoaster: Newman pens a realistic portrayal of a catastrophe, so please note that not everyone gets a HEA.
✨Narration: I don't watch TV, so I didn't understand the hype when Joe Morton was announced as the narrator. However, Morton absolutely nails the characters' anxiety-filled adrenaline while also conveying their emotional vulnerability to a potential nuclear catastrophe. The narration combined with the special effects creates an immersive audio experience. I HIGHLY recommend this format!
OMG, can this author write!! TJ Newman excels in so many ways: hooking the reader from the start in believable and realistic story lines, immersing you in the action, keeping you in almost unbearable suspense while also providing richly depicted scenes and characters. YOU ARE THERE, and it's scary as can be!
Worst Case Scenario turns an ordinary flight into a nightmare as the pilot suffers a medical emergency causing the plane to crash, killing all souls on board. It escalates to worst case scenario when the plane hits a nuclear power plant in a small town, causing extensive damage to the power plant and putting the survival of the world in question.
As someone who lived near the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania and experienced the horror and suspense of that stopped just in time near core melt-down, this novel admittedly hit me hard. However, it also gave me an appreciation for how well Newman captured the impact on the towns and people in the surrounding area, and how very quickly a day can change from the quite ordinary to the "are we going to live through this?" fear. Nowhere we could evacuate to would have been far enough away, and we had to prepare to leave knowing we may never be able to return. And yes, cancer occurrences and deaths skyrocketed in the following years. Sometimes even near misses have extensive and extreme consequences.
Kudos on another excellent suspense novel! I will continue to read everything you write!
My thanks to Little, Brown and Company for allowing me to access a digital review copy of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own and are freely given.
Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown, and Company for the arc of this book. I have read and enjoyed all the other TJ Newman books in a can’t put it down sort of way. This one did not grip me as much, but I still really enjoyed it. I think the nuclear science part was a little much and I lost interest at times. There were also several storylines and I found myself preferring one over the others…it was a large cast of characters with very little characterization.
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. Worst Case Scenario by TJ Newman. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for this advanced reader copy. I jumped at the chance to read former flight attendant TJ Newman’s newest novel. I loved her two previous books (and both have been optioned for film). However, this one was not my favorite. A pilot suffers a fatal heart attack, causing a packed airplane to plummet to the ground. However, that’s not the worst of it. The plane crashes into a nuclear power plant, causing a potentially cataclysmic disaster. The small town in Minnesota bands together, and ordinary people scramble to save America. We learn much about nuclear power and nuclear waste. I was not remotely aware of the intricacies of this clean energy, and I now know plenty. The whole nuclear power plant setting made me too nervous. I am a child of the 80s, and those fears of nuclear war bubbled up. I’d suggest reading her other books. They were winners. #netgalley #bookstagram #tjnewman #airplane #reading #whatiread #bookgram #bookworm #books #goodreads #libbyapp #whatsinyourbeachbag
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
Wow!! Wow!! Get ready for the ride in the airplane heading down when the pilot suffers a heart attack heading to the nuclear plant. Feel the passengers emotions, the stewardess emotions, can you feel the stress? Can they stop the downward spiral? Can they save the plane, the passengers or anyone?
Worst Case Scenario was intense!!!! My heart thumped and broke all at once during this tragic story. All of the characters were so well written. I can't even imagine something like this happening which I'm sure is why TJ Newman is such a great author. You can tell how much research went into Worst Case Scenario. I switched between ebook and audio, both were great. This just came out yesterday, go get it!!!
This book reads with the same panic and intensity as Newman’s other books, which I love! There’s also always at least one situation amongst the crazy events that makes me cry. I knew nothing about nuclear plants before reading this book, and I definitely learned a few things! Overall, not my favourite by T.J. Newman but I enjoyed it!
If you have read Newman's other books, Falling and Drowning, just stop reading the review and start reading Worst Case Scenario. Newman's writing style of edge of your seat, pulse pounding, and stress inducing is on display once again. As mush as it is cliff hanging chapters, I had to give myself a rest every once in a while! I was so anxious! Another 5 star read without a doubt. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
While T.J. Newman is the reigning queen of heartpounding thrillers, this one may be her best yet- and it's certainly the one that made me the most uncomfortable. It's the way this one felt incredibly real and horrifically plausible and far too close to home. It is actively terrifying to consider how easily a tragedy like this could occur, and the way this is written with a ton of chapter to chapter cliffhangers made it honestly impossible to stop reading.
5 stars. Wow! T.J. Newman does it again. I read Drowning by her last year and haven’t stopped thinking about the plot or the characters, I recommend that book to anyone and everyone looking for a fast-paced suspense book that reads like a movie. Worst Case Scenario is no different. I also sell or give away my books once read but Drowning is always one I ask for back to pass on to others and intend to read again (I never reread books). I wish I had a hard copy of Worst Case Scenario to do the same with.
I was a bit lost in the beginning with the explanations on the logistics of a nuclear power plant but the way Newman lays it out and returns to the parts and infrastructure throughout the book helped me to visualize how it all worked. The emotional attachment to the first responders, power plant employees and briefly the passengers on the crashing plane were genuine and pulled at my heartstrings.
As far as the format of storytelling I love the switching POVs and how almost every chapter ends with a suspenseful, hold your breath type of moment. It makes this book un-put-downable.
This book makes me want to go back and read Falling by Newman, the only one I haven’t read of hers yet.
Thank you to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company Publishing for an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When the pilot of a plane has a heart attack and the plane crashes into a nuclear plant all hell breaks lose. Everyone is called in to help fight a disaster waiting to happen. This is how everyone comes together to try and save their town.
This book was amazing, their are so many things going on at once it keeps you glued to the pages. The story is about more than just the tragedy and how humans respond, it's about community, sacrifices and how far a town is willing to go. I had so many emotions reading this book and actually have a book hangover it was that good. This book will stay with you long after you finish it. By far the best book I have read in years and I will recommend it to everyone I talk to. Thanks to Netgalley, Little, Brown and Company and T.J Newman for the opportunity to read this absolutely first star read.
After having read T.J. Newman’s other books, Falling and Drowning, I knew I was in for an intense thriller with many twists and turns. What I was not prepared for was my heart in my throat for the entirety of the book, nor the tears at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed Falling and Drowning, but I absolutely LOVED Worst Case Scenario.
This book is about humanity. It’s about love, selflessness, and sacrifice for the greater good. Each character is complex, and struggles with difficult decisions that have impacts not only on themselves, but on others (and potentially the entire planet).
As a scientist myself, I saw myself in Ethan, who wants a better world but prioritizes his family over everything else. I admired Joss’s tenacity, Steve’s strength, and Matt’s perseverance. I admired Dani’s bravery, Clara’s calmness, and Marion’s leadership.
This is a heart pounding, anxiety inducing thriller, and to be quite honest, I had to take several breaks from it, while simultaneously not wanting to put it down. I will be thinking about this book for a long time. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.
Buckle up & brace yourselves for the #WorstCaseScenario.
Thanks Little Brown & Company and NetGalley for the ARC.
Synopsis -
A Coastal airways flight carrying 297 passengers crashes into Clover Hill Nuclear power plant located in the small town of Waketa, Minnesota, after its pilot suffered a heart attack. This accident could just be the epicentre of a global catastrophe and a fire so enormous, that humans have yet to figure out how to extinguish. Waketa could just be on the brink of becoming another Fukushima or Chernobyl as it looks at a level 8 nuclear disaster.
Review -
T J Newman has yet again delivered a block buster worthy material. First of all, I want to applaud the level of research that has gone into this. Nuclear tragedies are mankind’s worst ever nightmares and she has done a great job with her imagination by blending her trademark plane crash trope, only this time with a nuclear power plant.
More than the thrill or action, it’s the enormity of what’s at stake, the sheer scale of ruin, devastation and reverberation that we are looking at, that takes the centre stage.
Roping in seemingly ordinary people - the plant employees, fire fighters, school teachers, friends, families and neighbours, she explores how their lives get affected and are about to change forever with such great care and tenderness - her writing brimming with poignancy and emotional richness.
As we painstakingly inch towards the point of no return, the timer ticking down, to the zero hour, the moment a corner is turned, another gargantuan problem crops up and we just have to wait with bated breath, our nails bitten to the quick - for it to be resolved, only until the next one strikes.
The community of Waketa has no choice but to rise up and face upto this apocalypse by coming together.
The plot might slightly be heavy on the technical details, but nonetheless it was an edge of the seat experience!
A must read for Newman fans!
Newman had me on my toes from page 1. Worse Case Scenario is a rollercoaster event, which left me in such an emotional state. This story made me stressed, sad, and hopeful! While reading I ended up falling asleep at 4 am because I didn't want it to end. It had its hooks in me. This was a beautifully tragic story of the absolute worst nuclear event to ever hit our bookshelves.
Thanks to Little, Brown and Company for the ARC!
T.J. Newman is an exceptional author, and I've enjoyed every one of her novels. So when I got approved for "Worst Case Scenario" on NetGalley, I was thrilled! True to her style, this book was just as captivating as her previous two. The plot is uniquely crafted and utterly engrossing—I couldn't put it down and finished all 336 pages in one sitting! Her writing style really pulls you into the story, making it easy to connect with the characters. Overall, this is a nail-biting read you won't want to miss.
Worst Case Scenario is the third book I've read by this author. They all relate to airline disasters.
This one differs from the last book in that it tells the story of the people on the ground and not the flight passengers.
There is a lot of tension throughout the entire book. The characters had a lot of depth and I liked the lengths that they were willing to go to in order to help others.
I alternated between the print and audio book. The book itself is riveting, but the audio version is even better.
I can't say enough to describe how fascinating this authors books are.
Thanks to netgalley and Little, Brown and Company for the arc.
