This is not my first T.J. Newman novel, so I had my helmet ready for a wild rollercoaster of emotions. Do not worry, this had to be my favorite out of the 3 books.
This novel had a different type of vibe than the other novels. It starts with a plane crashes into a nuclear power plant that unlocks a new level of accident. There was many characters stuffed into this book, but they all had unique set of responsibility to prevent a natural disaster. Which I admired their bravery and courage into rescuing others. Especially Joss and Dani.
I loved every moment of this fast-paced novel!!
Thank you NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley, T.J. Newman, and Little Brown and Company for the ARC.
Wow! This is the first book I’ve read from this author and you better believe I’ll be reading the other two very soon. This book gripped my attention from the first page and didn’t let it go until the very last.
This book is jarring, it’s chilling, it’s emotional and it’s thrilling. It’s everything you want in a thriller and then some.
I live between two nuclear power plants, this book really made me aware of just how powerless we are in the event of a nuclear meltdown or catastrophic failure. While this book depicts events that are not likely to happen, it proves how quickly things can spiral and how the fate of the surrounding areas can largely be impacted.
There are a lot of characters introduced at the beginning but over time they become easier to manage. We learn a lot about these characters, their past, and how important their role is to the story. This author is very detailed and is able to vividly depict the scene without being too much. You can feel the terror and sadness the characters are experiencing.
The countdown to meltdown at the beginning of each chapter increases the suspense and makes you want to finish the chapter quickly to find out what happens next.
This book will make you feel a rollercoaster of emotions. It is not very often I read a book like this. It’s not often a book has me nervous and looking into my city’s evacuation plan in the event of a nuclear catastrophe. This is one of those books that’s going to stay with me for a while. Incredible book. Well done to everyone involved!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4.5 stars!
I thoroughly enjoyed this and wow was it a whirlwind of emotions!
Worst Case Scenario is a bit different from Newman’s other two novels ‘Falling’ and ‘Drowning’ in the sense that the storyline doesn’t take place in the airplane itself. This time it takes place after an aircraft crashes into a nuclear power plant! This definitely made it not as claustrophobic like her other two, BUT, it definitely still had that adrenaline inducing effect!
Out August 13th, 2024
Thank you Little Brown & Co. and Hachette for the advanced ebook and audio!!
What a rollercoaster ride of emotions and an absolute page turner! I couldn’t put this down! It’s extremely well written and so descriptive. There’s so much going on throughout the whole book that it had my anxiety all over the place. My heart was racing and tears were shed. You couldn’t help but love every single character and be emotionally invested in what happens next. I loved everything about Worst Case Scenario. A book I will remember forever.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
First of all a huge thank you to netgalley and Little, Brown and Company for letting me read an advanced copy ahead of its release.
This is my first time reading such genre of a book and honestly i was hooked. You dive right into the action and then it just never stops. Then you think everything is going to be alright and suddenly you are on the brink of a huge meltdown because you managed to fall in love with these characters and their stories. To sum it all up i am hugely impressed by how well written this book was and how the author managed to write suspense and also make you think everything will be alright just before crushing your heart.
I recommend this book to everyone and i will definetly be looking into the previous book in this "series"
TJ Newman did it again.
Worst Case Scenario was cinematic, page-turning and honestly just a masterpiece.
Although we may be used to Newmans books on a plane, this one is a little different. I do love that she still started on a plane but the shift to a small town with failed promises of growth from a nuclear plant was such an atmospheric background for this book. As someone who grew up in a town not much bigger, the community in this book rang so true to what I personally know. The way that lives interconnected and people just genuinely cared about each other.
I loved that this was told in basically two stories-the people at the nuclear plant trying to save the world and the firefighters at the crash scene trying to save one person. It was written so incredibly well and by the end I was actively crying.
I just couldn’t give you a reason to not read this book and I’m so thankful to NetGalley for the early copy!
WORST CASE SCENARIO
I don’t know why I keep reading TJ Newman’s books when I already have flying anxiety but here we are again.
Similar to her first two books, this is a fast-paced and thrilling read. Same formula, but instead of the focus being on/in the plane, WORST focuses on the small town trying to prevent national disaster when the plane hits a nuclear power plant.
Equally intense and horrifying. You know bookstagram’s infamous line “I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding”? That was actually me reading this. I was kept at the edge of my seat.
Definitely more plot-driven than character-driven, this played out like an action movie in my head. The multiple POVs prevented from feeling overly connected to the characters but there were still plenty of emotional moments—from impossible choices to sacrifices—that made me tear up. TJ brings a level of community and humanity to disaster which I really appreciated.
DROWNING remains my favorite by TJ. If you enjoy her previous novels, this is definitely worth picking up!
Thank you @littlebrown for the #gifted e-arc in exchange for an honest review. WORST CASE SCENARIO comes out Tuesday (8/13)!
I’ve read all of TJ Newman‘s books & this one just might be my favorite. I rarely cry when reading a book but this one definitely got a few tears. I can’t talk too much about it without giving anything away, but if you like books with worst case scenario situations, reading to beat a dystopia, this one’s definitely for you.
Okay, where do I buy a ticket for the movie? Seriously, this book was a wild ride. Yes, the chain of events that had to happen to initiate the plot was chock full of back-to-back unlikely incidents, but who cares? This was an entertaining thriller harkening back to disaster movies of the 80s (intended in the best possible way) in that it wasn’t all focused on the action, but also the stories of the people. This is small town American filled with people. People grieving, people trying to find their place in the world, people struggling, kids trying to grow up. We grow to love the child, the teenager, the firefighters, the schoolteacher, the widower, the misanthrope turned hero. This book was great fun, and the perfect summer read. It gave me everything from breath holding moments, to nails in the palm incidents, to swearing out loud, to tears of both sadness and joy. If you have read T.J. Newman before you know to expect and you will not be disappointed by this one.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this advanced copy of the phenomenal book!
TJ Newman has done it AGAIN! She has the best way to suck you in and not let go.
I was fortunate enough to listen to this one on audio - excellent narration! and also have an eARC. I felt like I was immersed in the whole scene. From the opening line to the last I kept holding my breath, thinking "this is it!"
The small town of Waketa is one I would want to live in. Disaster strikes and everyone jumped in asking how they can help, rather than fleeing.
Pick this one up, you will not be disappointed.
This was my first read from T.J Newman and it was so exciting ! I was hooked from the beginning and it was just one thing after another ! She does not give you a second to breath in this book but buy is it a wild ride ! This book made me feel everything … from scared to surprised to shocked to sad and dropping a few tears ! A ride of emotions for sure , but well worth ! I also loved that I got a glimpse into some new knowledge about nuclear power and how it works . A book that is also informative wins me over every time. If you’re looking for a thriller that keeps your emotions going this is the one for you ! Excited to read the other 2 books from her !!!
Worst Case Scenario follows TJ Newman's tradition of writing pulse pounding action novels involving air travel. Only this time, a plane crash is the least of our worries. Trying to avert a potential nuclear holocaust is our focus. With a cast of characters you can't help but root for, Worst Case Scenario is a book you will read with a racing heart, and you will not want to put it down.
Newman does it again. I can't turn these pages fast enough. This one seems to be a little more on the technical side and there was a lot that was over my head... but my husband who is an electrical engineer would have LOVED the whole power plant aspect. That wasn't my favorite but I still loved the book!
Mid air a pilot has a heart attack and a massive 757 crashes into a nuclear power plant. On the Nuclear Event Scale, Chernobyl was a level 7, if those in charge don’t solve this one - it can be a level 8 - a disaster never before seen with global implications far beyond anything you want to even imagine.
When I saw that TJ Newman had a new book I knew I had to get my hands on it - little did I know the level of stress that this book was going to inflict on me (I’d say I got to a level 6). This book, like her others, has a plane crash (hence the plane on the cover) and multiple storylines. What I liked about this one was the creativity and ingenuity of the nuclear power plant storyline - it was super interesting and super stressful. That being said I wasn’t as connected to the characters and the ancillary storylines as the last two novels and I think what I really like about Newman’s novels is that she takes you on a wild ride and a heartfelt story at the same time. This one certainly had the ride - I had to switch to the audiobook (which was great btw and I highly recommend) because reading stressed me out too much and the ride was great, I just missed the connection with characters I had in her other two novels. Still throughly enjoyed this and am on the edge of my seat waiting for her next!
Thank you to Little Brown & Co and NetGalley for the ARC to review
T.J. Newman has made a name for herself as a writer of "plane crash" thrillers.
While waiting with fingers crossed, hoping that my request for the Worst Case Scenario ARC would be granted, I ordered T.J. Newman's earlier novels from my local library and quickly devoured them. Rest assured, T.J. Newman's writing style has definitely improved with Worse Case Scenario.
Fast-paced action, likeable characters (with a few curmudgeons like R.J to keep things honest) and numerous - not to mention unrelenting - world ending dilemmas will keep you turning those pages. It is 3:30 a.m. as I write this review, so I can definitely attest to the fact that there was no way I could put this book down until I turned that very last page.
So much heroism in the face of impossible odds!
But apart from the unremitting tension and action, what I most applaud about this book is this very clear message: so much more has to be done to secure and safeguard all nuclear power plants. It took one plane crash in a small town next to a negligible power station to underscore how much the powers-that-be are downplaying the dangers and consequences of a potential meltdown.
Ironically, articles abound on the internet reassuring us that North America's nuclear power plants are safe - even from attacks by enemy aircraft. And yet.... T.J. Newman was able to demonstrate that this is just not so. I'm no scientist but it will be interesting to read the commentary from the scientific community as to whether the events described in this gripping novel could indeed ever happen.
I'm rating Worst Case Scenario a 3.75 out of 5, rounded up to a four, because although I was definitely totally "thrilled and gripped" by the story, some of the writing was tad too melodramatic and gung-ho for me. Fire Chief Steve Tostig was larger than life: those last few chapters jerked several heart-broken tears out of my eyes. His eleven year old son, Matt had a role to play that seemed well beyond his tender age. But, if you suspend your disbelief and hang on for the ride, you will have to conclude that T.J. Newman has successfully churned out yet another gripping disaster thriller - a movie adaptation of which will surely be coming to a theater near you in the very near future!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and TJ Newman for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Worst Case Scenario coming out August 13, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I’ve read a couple books by this author. I love his subject matter surrounding aircrafts and tragic events of survival. I was definitely surprised to receive this book. I loved this book! I thought the action started off hot and kept going. It was intense! I was definitely hooked and wanted to see what happened next. I think the characters were awesome. There was a little bit of the science stuff that I wasn’t as interested in, but overall, I loved it!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys intense survival stories!
Wow! What a ride! TJ Newman has done it again with another gripping, edge of your seat, emotional (I wasn’t expecting to get teary-eyed), buckle up buttercup kinda read.
This is the best kind of thriller.. it’s chilling, heartbreaking, great character development, edge of my seat, non stop page turning til the very end. I gasped and cried and cheered the whole way through. This is my third read by this author and each book gets better and better. I just finished and I could finally exhale!
A pilot has a heart attack.. the plane is going down.. and there’s no one to stop it. Maybe it’ll crash in an open space? No. A nuclear power plant.. the worst case scenario.
Small town America is going about their day when a loud boom has them all questioning what happened. The plane has left death and destruction in its wake before it ever even crashes.
The characters are from this small town and are all intertwined from the firefighters to the plant workers and the children of the those involved.. you fall in love with the characters and cry with them and for them and cheer them on - I was so invested and could feel the anxiety and drive to save the day along with them.
Never did I think I would love these plane crash stories but it’s not just another plane crash story!
Thank you @NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the chance to read this ARC!
And I thought her other books were intense. Worst Case Scenario takes that tension to new levels. I was on the edge of my seat, clenching my jaw, feeling legitimately anxious for much of this book. However, at some point halfway or two thirds of the way in, I started to struggle to maintain focus- I think in part because of that tension level. Even a brief break for some humor or humanity would have helped- not only to break the tension, but to then make its return fresher and more effective.
Still an entertaining and standout read, if not on my favorites shelf alongside Newman’s previous books.
Thank you T.J. Newman, Little, Brown and Company, Hachette Audio, and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the eARC!
Buckle up and Hold on tight this was a wild ride! Not just a plane crash but a plane crashing into a nuclear powerplant 😬. Very descriptive writing which made me feel like I was in the book which I loved. There were lots of characters you grow to love and root for throughout the story. I was dying to know what happened het not wanting the story to end at the same time. This was my first read from T.J. Newman and certainly not my last!
I will be posting my review on my bookstagram account @bookofthemeg on 8/8!
