This book was INTENSE. I went in blind so I was expecting another plane crash book, which this is but it’s also so much more. I try not to think about nuclear reactors too much because they freak me out so this really just validated my fears (I know, I know; it’s fiction… but still!). all of the people trying to figure out what to do with no way to communicate with the general population all while dealing with other crises… it was a lot. This book was stressful and exciting and a little bit sad. I always want everything to work out perfectly for everyone but that just doesn’t really work in a thriller like this. There’s gotta be some stakes.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book which was truly about a Worst Case Scenario.
Thank you to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for the ARC!
TJ Newman is the queen of action pact novels. All of her books are constant action from start to finish. This one follows the aftermath of a plane crash in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant and the rush to save the impending nuclear disaster. This book was hard to put down given there were such high stakes and you needed to know what happened. However, I thought there were a few too many POVs to the point that it was hard to keep track of each individual story line. I think if one or two had been removed as a reader you would’ve been able to connect to each character more than spending most of the time remembering who they were and what their last chapter had been. Overall a very emotional high stakes story that is easy to fly through.

T.J. Newman writes some of my favorite disaster fiction, and Worst Case Scenario was no exception. Written by counting down the sixteen hours after a plane crashes into a nuclear power plant, this title jumps between characters and settings to give a breathless woven story of tragedy and community. While I missed the extra character development from her previous book, Drowning, this was a fast, clever, read. Recommend!
I loved T.J. Newman's Falling and Drowning and this is another excellent one!!! While the airplane disaster storylines in Falling and Drowning were very frightening, this one truly is the "worst case scenario" - a plane crashing into a nuclear reactor. The small town of Waketa, Minnesota becomes ground zero for the worst catastrophe the United States has ever faced. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot of a jumbo jet carrying 295 people suffers a massive heart attack resulting in his immediate death while his co-pilot is outside of the cockpit. Before anything can be done to remedy the situation, the plane goes into a nosedive and crashes into the Clover Hill nuclear reactor. Plant employees and the people of Waketa have to work together to figure out how to keep deadly radioactive poison from entering the air and the Mississippi River. The impact would be devastating to millions. I didn't want to put this book down and finished it in two days. I loved the characters and couldn't wait to find out what would happen to them. I definitely recommend this one and can't wait for T.J. Newman's next book! Thanks to #netgalley #littlebrown and #tjnewman for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
T.J. Newman is knocking it out of the park with her plane disaster books. I can’t believe she’s so new at this! This one was amazing like her other two. If you like her books you’ll love this one!
The drama was so intense I had to take a break so I could digest the situations the characters were dealing with.
When a pilot suddenly dies in his seat, his copilot is locked in the bathroom, a new flight attendant alerts the 295 people on board instead of air traffic control that the jet is immanently about to crash, there is no-one to take control to counter the plane's descent. What no-one knows is the crash site is a nuclear energy plant whose cache of spent fuel rods/cells are overcrowded in their concrete cooling ponds,. the whole operation is running on a shoestring budget for personnel and repairs and expansion.
The small town pulls together, plant personnel step up, everyone is doing their part to reduce radiation exposure and save lives.
This is the third airline thriller by TJ Newman that i have read. I highly recommend them all.
Though this book wasn't quite my top pick from this author, it still managed to be incredibly engaging and entertaining. I think my order of the three are:
Falling
Worst Case Scenario
Drowning
The main drawback I found was the abundance of characters; it was challenging to keep track of everyone. The fast-paced, suspenseful nature of the plot—particularly with the plane crash—made it difficult to form connections with the characters. I feel like the bridge crash and saving the little boy was its own side plot that felt a tiiiiiny bit disconnected from the big picture. Though that was freaking devastating and I almost cried. I appreciated the author’s choice to shift the focus from in-flight horrors to the plane crashing into a nuclear power plant, which added a genuinely terrifying element to the story. However, the technical details about the tanks and patching up the damage were a bit overwhelming. Despite the attempt to simplify the explanation, I still found myself struggling to grasp the specifics—perhaps a more basic explanation would have helped. I was waiting for a better reasoning of what was going on but maybe I'm just too dumb to follow.
Nevertheless, the book was an exhilarating and wild ride, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story despite these minor issues.
While this book wasn't my favorite by this author, it was so engaging and entertaining.
My ONLY flaw would be that there did seem to be a lot of characters and they were hard to keep track of. It was hard to connect with them when it felt so quick and jam packed with suspense and craziness due to the plane crashing. I liked how she steered away from in flight issues and focused on a plane crashing into a nuclear power plant. That is absolutely terrifying and could happen, but the general info of the tanks and patching the hole went over my head. There was a line about asking to explain to someone like they were five, and I still had a hard time following. I was like ummmm can you explain like I'm two?
BUT! This was so fun and a crazy ride and I loved the story either way.
T.J. Newman does it again! A nail biter that will break your heart. The definition of suspense from start to finish. Just when you think things are going to work out, there’s yet another wrinkle. This author has become a must read for me!
Thank you NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for a copy of this book!
This is my third novel by T.J. Newman. I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this book since I learned about it. She is the queen of giving her readers a wild ride. This book takes off running right away and you never get a chance to catch your breath. I really loved this book! My heart broke for these characters I fell in love with in this intense situation. I was able to get my hands on both the audiobook and the digital copy for Worst Case Scenario. The audiobook was fabulous! I could not finish this book fast enough. I still love her second book the best, but cannot wait to continue reading more from T.J. Newman.
This book will be released on August 13, 2024.
Thank you to Little Brown and Netgalley for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review
I was so excited to receive an advance copy of TJ Newman's latest thriller, Worst Case Scenario! I am a big fan of her two previous books and devoured both of them in a single day each. I did exactly the same thing with this newest book. Be sure you have a day to devote to this book so that you aren't having to put it down once you start it. This one starts off on a plane like the other two books but then it nosedives into a nuclear reactor location. A small town does everything it can to keep the reactor from blowing up and destroying the world. You might just be in tears as you read this book. Read and enjoy!
Fasten your seatbelts...TJ Newman's latest book, Worst Case Scenario, is a nail-biter. This time, the story revolves around a commercial passenger plane that crashes into a nuclear plant. I learned a lot about the subject through the author's words. Newman has a unique talent for explaining a complicated topic in a simpler, intriguing way. The most challenging part of finishing this book is knowing I will have to wait until next year for her next fascinating rollercoaster of a thriller.
Just like her previous books, this new novel doesn’t disappoint. Set some time aside because you won’t want to stop until you’ve reached the last paragraph—a nail-biting saga from page one on. Buckle up.
Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for the ARC!!
Wow! This book not only had me biting my nails but crying my eyes out. The story has so much heart.
When a plane crashes into a nuclear power plant, a group of scientists and first responders literally have to find a way to save the world in under 24 hours.
From science nerds to firefighters - the women and men in this book display acts of true selflessness and heroism in ways that are expected and unexpected.
This book had me on the edge of my seat and wondering what I would do in the same situation.
I highly recommend it for readers who like page-turning action, thought provoking scenarios and emotional drama.
Thank you to Net Galley for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Holy crap! I think I have found my top read for the month… No, the year. This was so freaking good! I am still mentally stuck on this book 2 days after finishing and am struggling to have any desire to read anything else. It takes a lot for me to not immediately forget most details of what I read and move on to the next book, and this one made that impossible. I am so impressed.
TJ did an impeccable job on this story. I have read her previous book, Drowning, it was amazing as well, and now I have pulled Falling to the top of my TBR because Worst Case Scenario has me in a chokehold and I need more. I am an emotional wreck, in the best way possible that only book lovers will understand. I laughed, I straight up UGLY cried, and I gasped and screamed a few times along the way. My non reading husband (yes I know, pray for me) literally asked me multiple times why I didn’t just put it down if it was “so bad” that it was making me so emotional. My 13yo book loving daughter is begging to read it after seeing the roller coaster of feelings I went through.
This is very fast paced right from the start. Filled with so much tension and breath holding moments, it will have a hold on you from start to finish. I did not want to put it down and was scrambling to get back to it anytime I had to. TJ does an incredible job of making you FEEL everything that is going on. You connect to the characters and get so emotionally involved that you’re on the edge of your seat literally rooting out loud for them from one disaster to the next. She writes in an educational way as well that doesn’t leave you feeling dumb, but leaves you wanting to learn more as well. My google history right now would probably scare some people. I was literally all in. You can see the amount of time, love, and research she puts into her writing and it just makes it all the more amazing.
This is a MUST read. I couldn’t recommend it more.
Thank you to Little, Brown and Company & NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this one.
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (3.5/5)
My fav by this author was Falling, then Drowning and then Worst Case Scenario. In that order.
I liked learning more about how a nuclear exposure would impact the body. It’s truly terrifying. The author definitely does drive home terrible situations.
However, I couldn’t get into this one as much as her others and never really connected with any of the characters.
I did think the way the audio was done with the special effects from time to time was cool.
It wasn’t bad I just didn’t like it as much as the others.
When a plane flies into a nuclear power plant, humanity must prepare for their first potential Level 8 Disaster.
This book has unlocked a new fear/ fascination for me. Just when I thought this author's books couldn't get anymore action-packed and intense than the first two, I was surely proven wrong. This book had it all. While I didn't precisely understand the scientific mechanisms of what was going on, I did enjoy the descriptions and the story and it didn't take away from me feeling the buildup of tension and the sense of doom throughout this book. The themes of restored faith in humanity, heroicism, and community in this book were exquisite. I experienced so many different emotions throughout and I was on the edge of my seat until the end. There is so much I want to say about what loved about the conclusion, but I can't without spoilers, so you'll just have to check it out for yourself!
4.5/5⭐
Another excellent novel from T.J. Newman. This book begins with an edge-of-your-seat scene and doesn't let up.
A plane suddenly crashes near a small town, cutting off the main highway in or out, destroys buildings and lifes, and puts everyone in the area at risk when most of the plane hits the nuclear power plant.
What ensues is a fast-paced story with heroes, unreal situations, unending problems and throughout it all, a community that pulls together to help everyone out.
Growing up in a small town, I've seen people pull together in an emergency that isn't as readily found in today's world. And hard to find in urban environments.
Community and family are themes throughout and really the only solution to a situation like this.
Newman seems to love to put her characters through the ringer. She doesn't hold back with terrible situations. I actually gasped at one point in the book. And even though you don't have a long time to get to know and love the characters as you would in a series, you still are able to identify with them, connect with them and mourn them.
A great read. You won't regret picking this book up as soon as possible.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat and taught me a lot about nuclear power which is not something I had much knowledge in before. I think people of all ages will enjoy this action packed book.

BOOK REVIEW: 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤/5
A pilot suffers a massive heart attack at 35,000 feet in the air on a plane packed tightly with passengers.
