I wanted to like this book but the fact that it took me so long to finish it speaks for itself. I really enjoyed Falling, Drowning not as much and Worst Case Scenario even less so. The premise was there. I listened on audiobook, and it was well read, and I enjoy a disaster movie, and this book had the feel of one but then.... it was just one bad thing after another and by the end I was just ready for it to end. That last chapter just kept going and going and going. And much like Newman's previous book Drowning, all the technical jargon was too much. I respect her for the research she puts in, but I had no idea what she was saying many times. I found my mind checking out when the technical bits would come up. I will continue to give her books a shot with the hope that maybe I will find one that I enjoyed as much as Falling.
Thank you to Little, Brown and Company, and NetGalley for the chance to read and review this book.
Wow! Another nail-biting suspense novel from TJ Newman. I really enjoyed her first two novels, Falling; and Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421, so I knew when I saw this one was coming out it would be an auto-read for me. Ms. Newman sure has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat. My heart ached for every character in this book as they fought to prevent a nuclear meltdown after a commercial airliner crashed into the nuclear power plant in their small town. Action-packed and full of suspense and emotion. Keep them coming TJ Newman! I loved it!!
Another smash hit by T.J Newman, Worst Case Scenario grabs your attention right from the start and kept me reading non stop til the end. Newman does a fantastic job keeping the reader engaged and in the story. I loved how the small town citizens are put in positions where they have to step up and do extroidinary things to stop the worst case scenario from happening. I struggled a little with keeping the characters straight-I feel like I was introduced to so many at the beginning. Other than that, a hands down must read thriller. I received this as both an audio and an electronic version
This book was absolutely amazing. A tragedy occurs on a flight when the pilot suffers a fatal heart attack. The plane goes down, and crashes into a small town that happens to be home to a nuclear power plant. The plane unfortunately has crashed right into that plant, causing many catastrophic consequences. This book was so heart wrenching, so edge of your seat, and so great. I loved it so much, and I can’t wait to read more of Newman’s books in the future!!!
I loved this, and think I could handsell it to such a wide variety of readers—what a gift to a bookseller! No one writes fast paced, edge of your seat, high stakes thrillers like TJ Newman. She is a master of this genre, and I will read anything she writes!
Another excellent, gripping story from Newman. Absolutely could not put this book down, from page one. She hooks you right up until the last sentence.
T.J. Newman has done it again! I was sweating while reading this one on the edge of my seat! Haha! But seriously, I loved Newman’s previous books and absolutely loved them and although this one is a little different, it does not disappoint in the thrill department. I loved the pacing of the story and the title of this book tells you all you need to know!
I was on the edge of my seat once again! I loved the characters and their stories. The author is really great at setting the (terrifying) scene. I would definitely recommend. 4.5 stars rounded to 5!
As with the author's previous books this one is a disaster thriller. It is set around an plane crash and a nuclear power facility. The plotting is very fast paced and the fact that you are left with no time to catch your breath between all the action is my only minor quibble with this book. It is also in a weird way the strength of the riveting story though, as author gets you caught up in the anxiety and stress of the events. I really enjoyed this entertaining adrenalin rush of a novel. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital advance reading copy. 4.25/5
TJ Newman knows how to deliver a heart stopping {literally 😂} action packed thrilled that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you read…. In her latest, when a pilot suffers a fatal heart attack in the air, while the co-pilot is in the restroom, the plane goes down with over 200 lives on board; right into a town with a nuclear power plant leading to the “WORST CASE SCENARIO”…
The novel is a bit different from Newman’s first two plane centric novels; this one is much more focused on the events after the plane goes down which is just the very beginning, this novel tells the affects of the town and how it changes so many lives. The audiobook is so well done and powerful. I wish it had been a bit longer; but Newman is always concise with her writing, which is what makes it so cinematic and perfect for translation to film.
It's been over 12 years since I was on a plane, and I admit TJ Newman's books don't exactly motivate me to get on another flight. While Newman's first two books Falling and Drowning make you anxious to fly, Worst Case Scenario shows that you're not exactly safe on the ground either.
TJ Newman is a previous flight attendant turned author and has used that experience to influence the thrilling books they write. Every book I've read has me on the edge of my seat, anxious to find out what happens next. Worst Case Scenario grabs you right off the bat, and holds you throughout the book. The pacing is perfection, and that combined with the intense twists and turns, makes for a fantastic and entertaining read.
Another aspect of the book to point out is Newman's ability to get readers to connect with the characters. There are a lot, and we grow attached to them as the story progresses. While it's true I was more invested in some characters versus others, I still wanted to know where every character's story wound up.
I gave Newman's previous two books five stars, so I had high hopes for this book. Though this one certainly did not disappoint by any means, I did ultimately decide on four stars versus five (though it was super close!) Ultimately what docked the star for me was the inclusion of the nuclear power plant. It was an amazing story, but there were parts that felt above my understanding. Newman does a great job at filling in the holes of knowledge, but her other books were easier to wrap my head around.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.
This book absolutely shredded my nerves. Right from the first page until the end it had my blood pressure ringing in my ears and unlocked a new phobia.
This was my first read by this author and it definitely will not be my last.
I wonder if they sell this in bookstores in the airport...... (Insert nervous laughter here).
When a plane hits a nuclear plant, the town is plunged into an emergency situation as they try to prevent a nuclear meltdown while dealing with the effects of the crash. Overall, a fast-paced book involving a situation that you hope never happens to you.
As always, T.J. Newman delivers a fast-paced, high-stakes adventure in her newest release, Worst Case Scenario. It reads almost as if you're watching a movie, and it was difficult to put down, as I made consistent justifications for why I had to read *just* one or two more pages. From the first sentence of the book until the last, Newman wastes no space in the novel's limited page-count, and it shows. The story is jam-packed with both characters and action, and I personally love the changing perspective of the narration and the countdown to Ground-Zero. The nuclear event scale that prefaces the novel is a nice touch, as well, letting the reader know just how intense the stakes are before the book even begins.
That being said, I found I didn't connect with the large cast of characters as I did with her previous novels, Drowning and Falling. Perhaps it has something to do with the size of the cast being larger and more spread out, but nonetheless, this eventually caused a disconnect for me with two of the primary characters, Joss and Steve, and their role in the climax of the novel. I still thoroughly enjoyed Worst Case Scenario, but it wasn't without a few faults for me. I can't wait until this author's next release! Her books are addictive to read.
Thank you to the publisher via NetGalley for providing me with a copy of Worst Case Scenario by T.J. Newman in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and are not influenced by any third parties.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC. I don't typically go for thrillers and I was a little spooked to be reading about a plane disaster in between travel plans, but Worst Case Scenario kept me on my toes in the best way possible throughout this short and speedy book. I loved the various story lines that provided a great amount of depth and emotion to an already harrowing tale of nuclear disaster and a modern tragedy that feels very possible. I was particularly entrapped by Connor's story line and the distances the fire crew was willing to go to save the life of one child.
Drowning and Falling are two of my all time favorite books. I couldn’t out them down! When I saw that TJ Newman had a new book I couldn’t wait to read it. Unfortunately this one wasn’t on the same level as the first two. I’m still glad I read it, but it just wasn’t what I was hoping for.
The first 25% of the book was really slow. I had a hard time connecting to the characters and getting in to the storyline. The first two were tragedies that everyone hopes they never experience, but can understand. This book being about a nuclear power plant came with a little more science and concepts that aren’t as easily understood.
As the book progressed I did get to know the characters better and build connections with them, rooting for their survival. By the last 15-20% I couldn’t put the book down. There were many tears! TJ Newman does a great job of telling the story of one event through the perspective of so many people in different positions. I love that style of writing and she does it phenomenally! I am glad I read this book, but do highly recommend readers start with her other two books first.
Worst Case Scenario details the chaos after a commercial plane crashed into a nuclear power plant, the effects this has on the small town where the power plant is located, and how to resolve the situation before it becomes catastrophic
The third person writing often made certain statements or sentences confusing in regards to who said what. This book flipped between so many different characters that side character’s comments led to a difficulty understanding who said what through the use of “they”
I really liked the way that the author explained things in a way that made sense to those with little knowledge on nuclear power. She seamlessly provided technical information and an explanation so readers understood.
It was hard to get into but the characters had a lot of depth to them. It was a bit confusing and i had to go back to remember who some of the characters even were but overall it was a decent read.
I think maybe it just wasn’t the type of story for me but there are so many readers i know will love it.
DNF at 50%. The storyline was boring and failed to catch my attention. I found myself skimming through passages before giving up around the halfway mark. Thank you Netgalley and Little, Brown, and Company for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I wanted to read this book because I loved Drowning but this one fell short for me :/ the book was very heavy on the procedural aspects of the accident
WOW! When the unthinkable happens, the fallout from it is just traumatic!!
When a plane goes down towards a nuclear power plant, some amazing characters go to great lengths and sacrifice to save the world. This is the first book I have read by T.J. Newman. Excuse me while I go get the others, Falling and Drowning!
This book was well told, and had you from the start!
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC!!!!
