If you have that one, on repeat, TV series that was cancelled out of the blue with a cliff hanger, and an ‘ohh no, they never got together the way they should have’, and you have depended on it because your own life wasn’t quite perfect, then wish on a birthday cake candle as Brynn did, and see what happens. To be prepared for the outcome read this easy read book. If you have a flat mate, better get them to read it too! Thank you to Penguin General UK - Fig Tree, Hamish Hamilton, Viking, Penguin Life, Penguin Business and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Prime Time Romance, the second novel from Kate Robb, was such a joy to read. I absolutely loved it.
Prime Time Romance is a duel POV story that sees Brynn and her roommate Josh transported to Carson’s Cove, the setting of Brynn’s much loved comfort TV show, after she wishes for her own happy ever after when a mysterious birthday cake appears at her door. When they wake up in Carson’s Cove, they come to find that not only are they now in a weird new world but they’re no longer themselves, they’re expected to play the role of the girl next door and the bad boy. Only the girl next door is supposed to end up with the golden boy, so will they stick to the script or will real love change this story.
As with her debut, This Spells Love, Robb has created a wonderful work of magical realism where we are totally transported to the fictional world of Carson’s Cove. In it we have a gorgeous slow burn friends/roommates to lovers, alongside a love letter to all of those teen shows that our millennial hearts lived for. There are so many fun Easter eggs to spot - but I’ll leave those for the reader to enjoy. I will say though that I particularly loved the Buffy ones!
This novel is best enjoyed if you’re prepared to suspend your disbelief and just go with it. If you can do that you’re going to have such fun reading this one. It’s fun to see how Brynn at first embraces her new reality, getting to live out her comfort show, but then allows herself to break away from the old tropes and be truer to herself. I really liked the blossoming relationship between Brynn and Josh, as well as the emerging friendship between Brynn and Luce.
This one was a lot of fun and the nostalgia was just brilliant. I’m looking forward to whatever Robb writes next.
What a beautifully quirky read! A little bit bonkers and whole lot of romance. Well worth suspending your beliefs to dive into this unique, cleverly crafted and dun bit of escapism. Fun and fabulous!
Having grown up with an active imagination, I always tried to re-imagine my favourite shows with different endings, or what kind of character I'd be in the universe. Right down to what I would have done in the main character's shoes.
So finding a book about a woman making a wish and ending up in her favourite comfort show was right up my alley. (Although with my current comfort shows I'd be terrified to end up there - I'm not too hopped up on hospitals or surgery IRL, not keen on my possessions setting on fire, or I'd end up pretty much dead/irrelevant in Greendale. IYKYK)
This book was such a fun and easy read. Sprinkled with the nostalgia of old shows we love, with tropes and nods to show plot lines we like, it is an easy recommendation from me.
One thing I wanted more of was a little bit of drama. Thinking about it like a series, we have the main storyline which was explored well and had its notable gasp-worthy moments. But I feel like some of the mini-plot lines or side characters introduced felt a bit irrelevant and added just to give a 'sense' of tension.
The only other thing I think would have tied the story up nicely was a little longer in the 'after', but that's because I'm greedy 🥹
A huge thanks to Penguin, and NetGalley for this ARC!
i adored this book and absolutely sped through it! brynn is divorced and living with josh, a bartender. after not really talking for a while, a night out at josh’s bar sees the two watching brynn’s favourite tv show. one unexpected food delivery and birthday wish later, brynn and josh find themselves in a whole new world, specifically, that of brynn’s favourite fictional world.
this book is full of funny, heartwarming, and emotional moments. it was such a lovely read and definitely recommend it!!
I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It’s definitely 50/50 for me. Some bits I really enjoyed but others felt flat. I think it could have been shorter but then it wasn’t super long in the first place.
The romance had loads of potential but there wasn’t enough depth to it so it all felt a bit flat. The plot did make up for it as it was really interesting but I was here for the romance and there just wasn’t much

A new divorcee finds herself in the ideal world of her favourite 2000s teen soap and a second-chance romance
this is the author debut and i really enjoyed it
This book was a bit of a mix for me! It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy it but it also wasn’t one of my favourites either! I liked it but I’m not sure I’d read it again, the concept was unique and I hadn’t truly been expecting it!
The FMC had a lot of qualities that I could personally relate to, which made the book more enjoyable.
Overall this was a nice book, and I would recommend for a bit of a different read!
Prime Time Romance - Kate Robb 📺
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
KATE ROBB NEVER MISSES!!
I adore this book, after reading This Spells Love last year I was desperate to get my hands on Kate's newest book and I'm so happy I did.
Prime Time Romance follows Brynn - a recent divorcee - who is obsessed with the 90's tv show Carson’s Cove. After her 30th birthday Brynn finds herself and her roommate Josh stuck in the tv show, on a quest to get back to the real world she falls in love but is it with the wrong guy?
Kate writes magical realism so well and always keeps me hooked on the plot. I read this book so quickly and was so sad that it was over.
Cannot wait to read all of Kate's books in the future!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin UK for sending me this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own*

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book!
I enjoyed this book- it was a fun, lighthearted read for me with a great concept. There's definitely a lot more that I would've enjoyed- characters being more fleshed out, a bit more depth to Josh and Brynn's relationship and maybe more of an explanation of how they actually got to Carson's Cove? It wasn't perfect, but it was fun and did what it said on the tin!
The ideas of "suspension of disbelief" and "happily ever after" are central to the plot of this book and to the experience of reading it. If the parallels between "Carson's Cove" and your colleague's favourite late 90s teen drama seem heavy-handed at the beginning, it's because the author wants the reader to be comfortable with being dropped head first into an alternate reality, where they will spend 98% of the book.
So the question is: if you could live inside an episode of your most loved cosy family TV show, would you do it? And what are you willing to give up to stay in a place where you know nothing will ever go wrong and life will be easy? For Brynn, this is a very attractive prospect: her real life is not so satisfying, what with her divorce, her lopsided finances, and her being surrounded by fairweather friends who don't even pretend to celebrate her 30th birthday.
Her first instinct is to embrace her new life, but there's one very big problem: her fate is tied up with that of Josh, an unsuspecting bartended who also happens to be her roommate, and who did not expect to be sucked through a vortex into an idyllic beach town where nothing is ever as sparkly and wholesome as it seems.
The revenge/mystery element came a little bit too late for me, but it does fit in with the general style of the source material: the villain's motives are sinister, but not overwhelmingly so, and their gripes -- which they have turned into the whole world's problem -- are quickly resolved with time for a lesson about "appreciating the life you have".
In the parts where we see it, the chemistry between Brynn and Josh is arresting -- exactly the kind of thing I would tune into Netflix to see.
Ultimately, I just couldn't wait to get the heck out of Carson's Cove.
This as a really cute romance, the concept was unique and I enjoyed it a lot.
Josh was a cutie and I was routing for him, Brynn annoyed me at times but overall I like her character.
I didn’t feel a lot of chemistry between the characters though, it was like they realised they liked each other and jumped straight into sex, which is okay but I feel there could have been more of a build up, more tension and more moments of wanting each other. It just lacked a lot and fell abit for me.
The overall story was cool though it felt like a lot of info about the former show we had to keep learning about. Like something happened which then needed to be explained for a paragraph or two or three and it dragged.
I was routing for Josh’s happily ever after and that’s what got me through the book!
Thankyou to net galley for the Arc 🫶🏻
4.5 stars! I read an arc of this spells love and I loved the authors writing then. I was excited for this one and it did not disappoint. I got the pleasantville vibes right away and also Gilmore girl vibes. I have never seen the Dawson creek which is why I didn’t feel those.
It was a cute rom com and fun take on it. It’s an easy and fun read and I will defiently recommend!
This was a magical and fast paced read. I really enjoyed the story from the startt and will recommend it to friends!
I love how the start of this book reminded of a movie! I really enjoyed the 90s nostalgia throughout the book. I
A light romance that i enjoyed whilst reading it (and read the second half in one go). I appreciated that unlike most romances I've read recently, the two main characters didn't have a massive fight, but I do feel it could've been stronger if they'd banded together to solve their shared problem. Instead, Brynn pretty much deals with it alone.
There was also no hidden reveal or lore or whatever to why or how the two were inserted into this television world, which was a bit disappointing. Like, who or what was Sheldon? How did they end up in the Cove? I guess it was magic.
Overall, a fun read as a palate cleanser between heavier books, or for a bit of escapism on a summer holiday.

Brynn’s looking for her happily ever after and the only place she can find it right now is in her beloved television series Carson’s Cove (based on Dawson’s Creek). What follows is a birthday wish that sends her and her gorgeous roommate, Josh, to a parallel universe where Brynn needs to win the heart of Spencer to get her happily ever after. However, as sparks begin to fly with the wrong person, Brynn begins to wonder whether love on screen can ever compare to the real thing.
I absolutely loved this. It’s witty, magical, fun, and full of awesome little Easter Eggs of all of our favourite television shows. I loved the tension between Brynn and Josh and how it seemed to grow.
This is a lighthearted romantic comedy that screams “pick me choose me love me” (iykyk) and as a sucker for immersive television shows, I was sold. Although with the magical realism and the premise, I really wish I caught a Charmed Easter Egg, so if anyone else did I’d love to know!

I thought this was a really fun read. I loved all the little Easter eggs to teen dramas (Chad Michaels was a particular favourite) and how it really gave off that frothy teen drama vibe. I liked how all the expected archetypes were there and how they all followed their expected storylines. Bryan and Josh were such a fun dynamic and how that evolved against the backdrop of Carson’s Cove. Yes it was predictable, but part of the magic was in everything working towards an happy ending (on multiple levels) even with a few curveballs thrown in.
This wasn’t my usual type of book, but I thought I would give it a go.
It wasn’t bad as such, but it was a harder book for me to get into.
I couldn’t really engage with the characters of the plot so I found it a challenge to keep reading. It was well written, just not my thing. I am sure it would be popular with plenty of others.
What happens when a birthday cake is randomly delivered by an unknown but slightly familiar looking delivery guy, you make a wish and wake up in your favourite series (which was cancelled on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers) along with your roommate and now have to give the main character the happy ever after they deserve but never got to get?
But whilst you’re playing out your teenage dreams of giving Sloan and Spencer their rightful ending, you start falling for the wrong guy!
This is pure 00s and 90s TV and film nostalgia in a book. The story is full of subtle references and nods to popular shows at the time (think Dawsons Creek, Buffy, Riverdale etc). I think this is why I tore through in it 24 hours 😂
It’s a predictable story. From the beginning you know how everything will play out. Nevertheless it was still a fun read!
I did feel like the romance aspect could have been covered more, as for me it was quite rushed. I would have liked to have seen more relationship development between Josh and Brynn.
It’s definitely one to read for a refreshing take on romance and for the throwback vibes ✨
