This is my first exposure to this author and I was not disappointed. Choudhary has delivered a fast paced and deliciously wicked tale. The characters are well rounded and come across as believable, whether you love them or hate them. This provocative, somewhat dark and twisted story grabs you from the first page and keeps you guessing until the very end where the authors insert a deliciously wicked twist.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture who provided me with a copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

If you're a fan of Freida McFadden, you have GOT to read this book! After the first big twist of the book, I rolled my eyes and thought, not this twist again. But it turned out that wasn't the true big twist of the book! There were tons of insane twists to come that you'd never expect. They were all done so well and I just absolutely loved this book and recommend all thriller lovers check this out as soon as possible!

Unfortunately for me this just didn’t keep my attention. I didn’t see the twist at the end coming though so I am glad I stuck with it.

Wow - this was a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. I was truly so shocked by all of the twists at the end. Just when I thought I'd gotten ahold of why things played out the way they did, another wrench was thrown in and twisted everything around. The POV of the "watcher" was an especially fun mystery to try and suss out. I thought I had figured out who it was until it was finally revealed at the end. I had no inkling that it could be who it ended up being. I was so shocked by all of the revelations in this and its been a while since I've read a thriller like this that surprised me so many times. This was really well done. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Blurb

Everyone thinks my life is bliss. The love of my life, Cary, and I live in our dream home and we have a beautiful little girl, Harper. I may not have given birth to her, but I’m her mommy now. But there’s one thing we never talk about…Cary’s wife before me, Presley, was perfect in every way. But she went missing a long time ago. Cary was distraught when he told me how she was abducted from her car, leaving behind a pool of blood. No one saw a thing.

The neighbors are always gossiping about Presley. I try to ignore them, but one day I hear something that makes my stomach flip. Presley was abducted from her home. The home I now live in. Cary lied to me about the car. But why?

As I search our beautiful home for answers, I stumble across Presley’s diary. My heart thunders in my chest as I discover the Cary had something to do with his wife’s disappearance. And I’m terrified I might be next.

But Cary doesn’t know that I have a secret too. He doesn’t know how far I’ve gone to get this perfect life, and how much further I’ll go to keep it…

My Opinion

For a few days this book has kept me entertained and I have to say that I enjoyed this thriller. I did feel that this book was predictable - however my predictions were very wrong. I listened to this as an audiobook and for me that just added to the suspense. Whilst the cover is plain, there is an awful lot going on behind the door. Ruhi Choudhary uses many twists to keep the reader guessing.

Rating 4/5

Pros:

The story begins strong and has characters you want to understand. It develops and as more information is exposed the view on people shifts accordingly.

Cons:

I know it isn’t fair to compare this book to others but it feels like an attempt to use the unreliable narrator feels very much like Verity but less effective. May it is listening to the story rather than reading the print but it was hard with so many pronouns, name changes and changing what we see or understand the character to believe in the same moment after we know more. It feels too messy.

His Last Wife by Ruhi Choudhary is a thriller that hooked me from the start with its unexpected twists. I initially thought I knew where the story was going, but I was pleasantly surprised. Anna, the protagonist, seems to find her ideal partner in Cary and forms a quick bond with his daughter Harper. However, living in the shadow of Cary's seemingly perfect, missing wife Presley proves challenging. The unexpected plot twists kept me on edge, and I appreciated the depth of the characters.

The audiobook narration by Penelope Rawlins and Kelly Burke added an extra layer of enjoyment, with distinct voices for the major characters. Overall, "His Last Wife" is a compelling read that I highly recommend to fans of twisty, suspenseful stories.

Love this authors books but this was the first time listening to one and I think I will stick to reading them in the future! The story itself was great with some unexpected twists and turns that really surprised me and some very clever character development. But the narrator annoyed me when she used used voices for different characters especially the child one which I found took away from the story for me because it bugged me so much! So 5/5 for the story but 2/5 for the narrator.

"His Last Wife" by Ruhi Choudhary is a very twisty thriller. When I finished the book, I was dizzy from all the twists. Yes, you can have too many. And... they were not really all believable.

The other issue I had was that I kept falling asleep every time I listened to this audiobook. It happened like 4 times. Eventually, I realized that it was the narrator's soft and whispery voice that lulled me. I'm not sure which one voiced Anna, but the book was narrated by Penelope Rollins and Kelly Burke. Despite different narrators, I had trouble telling apart the female voices and got confused a few times. I did finish the book.

You should be aware of the trigger warnings - domestic abuse, gaslighting, arson, murder, choking, bludgeoning, and blood. Other than that and the title, it's better not to know much about the plot ahead of time.

I didn't like any of the characters, which made it hard to relate to them. The book is told from a few different time periods and several points of view, one of which is a mystery.

I listened to this as an audiobook, which had two narrators for the different viewpoints in the novel, which worked very well. The story was compelling and had plenty of twists and turns and echoes of Daphne de Maurier’s Rebecca - only this time it’s the family that’s called Danvers. The characters, however, were not likeable or sympathetic and the timeline seemed a little confusing, with the child, Harper seemingly developing from a baby to a child far more quickly than the storyline seemed to suggest. At times, it also seemed to drag a little.

With thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.

His Last Wife
by Ruhi Choudhary
Narrated by Penelope Rawlins, Kelly Burke

Rating: 4.5/5.0 Stars

His Last Wife is my first novel by Ruhi Choudhary, and I hope it won't be my last. There were tons of twists and turns that kept me wondering what was really going on until the very end. Anna meets Cary and falls in love with the widower and his little girl Harper. She moves in with them, and the only sticky thing is that his former wife's mother (his wife was kidnapped and assumed dead) is still very present because of Harper, and does nothing to hide the fact that she doesn't approve of Anna. As Anna tries to get to know the neighbors and friends while trying to fit in with the group, she has no idea that someone is watching...and waiting...

There are SO many twists and turns in this novel and I don't want to give anything away, but I really enjoyed listening to it. The narration was very well done and gave plenty of life to the characters and the story.

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture Audio, and the author for the chance to listen to and review this ALC!

His Last Wife was an amazing read. This story was full of twist and turn. When you think you can accurately anticipate what's going to happen then........ YOU DON'T. Once I got started, I couldn't put it down.

Up until the end, the pace was steady with a constant state of “what’s really going on” but when we finally got to the end, I got whiplash with all the reveals. I wanted justice but don’t feel everyone that should have got it, did
I enjoyed the audiobook and narrators, and would definitely recommend listening or reading this authors first standalone thriller

I just finished reading "The Other Wife" by Ruhi Choudhary, and I'm still reeling from the experience. This book is a masterclass in plotting and misdirection - just when I thought I had a handle on what was happening, another twist would come along and upend everything.

The premise is intriguing: you step into the life of a man whose wife has gone missing, only to find yourself inheriting not just her mother (who seems determined to make your life hell), but also a daughter you can't help but fall in love with. As you try to navigate this new reality and find your place in the world of the woman you're replacing, you start to realize that things are not as they seem. Her friends are wary of you, and the closer you get to the truth, the more you realize that there's darkness lurking beneath the surface of their perfect lives.

But just when you think you're starting to piece together what's really going on, someone from the past returns from the dead, and everything you thought you knew is turned on its head. The truth, when it finally comes to light, is shocking and completely blindsiding.

I loved this book. It's one of those rare reads that's both impossible to put down and yet you never want to end. The writing is compelling, the characters are complex and multi-dimensional, and the plot is meticulously crafted to keep you guessing until the very last page. If you enjoy a good thriller with plenty of twists and turns, "The Other Wife" is absolutely worth every one of the stars I gave it. Just be prepared to have your mind blown!
