WOW! This book did not disappoint! If you like unreliable narrators, everyone in this book is unreliable! The plot twisted me around so much my head is spinning! I couldn't even keep track of how many times I was blindsided by a twist!
A popular socialite wife disappears with no trace except her blood in her home. Her narcissist doctor husband finds a new lady. This lady moves in and begins to be called mommy by his daughter. New lady realizes the man is scum and thinks he killed his wife. Then the tables turn...
I really can't go on without revealing twists that I don't want to reveal. This book is packed with secrets and lies. Trust no one and know that nothing is as it seems.
If you are a fan of Freida McFadden, then I dare say you will enjoy this book! My only wish is that we had a better epilogue that told us how the character's lives went on. A view of 6 months later might have actually pushed this to 5 stars for me!
This is one of those books that you won’t be able to guess the ending. Twists are almost complete new storylines that are explained afterwards vs building off clues. There are 4 parts. The parts felt clunky and very different from each other. It felt like the author wasn’t sure what storyline/twists to choose prior to writing and forced them all in. It felt disconnected.
Part 1 focused on Anna becoming the girlfriend of Cary, a man whose wife mysteriously disappeared. They move quickly and suddenly Anna is living in his house and raising his infant daughter who calls her mom. Part 2 begins with a major twist and Anna feels like a whole new character. I strongly disliked her victim blaming and selfishness. She comes off as severely insecure, hateful, spiteful whereas she didn’t seem like that to me during part one. Part 3 now has new character voices and Part 4 is full of twists completely out of left field that would only work if characters were completely blind.
Things that bothered me: How was there not more in the media regarding Presley’s disappearance? How was Cary able to stay out of the media scrutiny and live such a normal life after his wife was taken leaving a bloody crime scene in his home? And as a surgeon husband? He would have been blasted all over the news as the #1 suspect.
I was very confused on the passing of time. By Anna’s account everything seems to be moving slowly, day-to-day, but Harper starts as a 10 mo old when Anna meets her and eventually sounds/acts like a 4 year old, only to find out 18 months pass from meeting to the end of the book.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #BookoutureAudio for the book #HisLastWife by #RuhiChoudary. This book was a whirlwind of twist and turns till the explosive ending. A new relationship, a new daughter, a missing wife and her mother all thrown at once at Anna. Will I be the next to go missing? So many lies and deceptions had me on the edge of my seat.
There are so many twists and turns in "His Last Wife" I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride. At the start of this story, we see everything from the perspective of Anna, a woman who manages a therapy office and falls in love with a surgeon who is also a client coping with the grief of losing his wife and raising a baby girl on his own. As Anna's relationship with the surgeon develops, she realizes that all of the perfection on the surface barely conceals the chaos underneath.
Readers who love a suburban thriller filled with secrets, lies, and drama will enjoy "His Last Wife," though I felt it dragged a bit before heating up at the end.
3.75/4⭐️
As this was my first Ruhi Choudhary novel so I wasn't sure what exactly to expect, but I can confirm i will be reading more of Ruhi’s books!! I was completely hooked from the start which continued throughout. I did find a times it was bit far fetched but at the end of the day this is a story made to catch attention. Do have to say I loved the ending and how everything tied nicely together. I did not expect how many twists and had me shocked at the ending few chapters.
Overall this was a great suspense thriller that had me wanting to find out more. I would 100% recommend this book to all readers.
Thanks to Ruhi Choudhary, NetGalley, and Bookouture for the ARC.
Slow to start but definitely worth the ending!! This was a wild ride with twists I totally didn't see coming. Motherhood, marriage and friendships and the elite! I don't want to give too much away but this was a fantastic read! If you liked The Housemaid and are a fan of twisty community thrillers this book is for you!
A marvellous masterpiece of misdirection, with an excellent twist and a half added for good measure.
At first I wasn’t really hooked, I even told a friend she shouldn’t bother requesting this. Slowly I got more and more into the story, and about 60% in I was fully hooked. I even told my friend she needed to try to get the ALC. Then the twist at the end happened and my jaw dropped. I immediately told my friend I was mind blown and she needs to listen! The ending absolutely blew my mind! There were multiple twists I didn’t see coming. Absolutely recommend!!!!
4.5 stars 🌟
Narration was great, 4/5 🌟
Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutore, and Ruhi Choudhary for this ARC audiobook!
Anna reluctantly enters the life of Cary, who is attending therapy at her place of employment for the recent loss of his wife. She soon falls in love with his near 1 year old, Harper. But everything is *not* what it seems. So many secrets and lies!
A nicely fast-paced thriller. I was intrigued throughout even from the very beginning. I enjoyed the characters and backstories. I enjoyed the twist at the end, unique from other similar storylines.
I picked this one for the narrator and if you listen to it, you can see why.. She is the best! Also the cop voices do really sound like cops. It is like "That is definately how cops talk."
This is one of the twistiest books I have ever read. I thought I had some idea what was going on and then BAM I was hit with a new twist. Amazing.
This audiobook had me hooked!
Anna had a hard childhood - together with her best friend, Seth, she managed to turn it around. An office manager at a therapist office, Anna can't help interest in Cary. A handsome dr, spousal loss counseling.
After moving in to his swanky house with his young daughter, Anna finally feels she has found her purpose. But Cary starts to change.
His last wife has been missing for months - everyone has a theory. But really happened to Presley? Will she ever be found?
First book I read by ruhi choudhary and I already can’t wait for the next one! This kept me engaged from the very beginning! Twists and turns when I didn’t expect it kept me hooked!
Content warning dv - extra points for this being included at the beginning of the book.
A fun domestic thriller that had me truly intrigued initially. I’d recommend it for those looking for an easy thriller or perhaps those looking to try out a thriller as a change. The writing and narration was great and I despised every single character in the book with ease.
The plot was on point for I’d say around 3/4 of the book and I was really enjoying it. I note that some readers loved the ending but I felt it was all a bit like a made for tv drama for my liking and it was tied up quickly and neatly with a bow - which I appreciate is no mean feat for the author to achieve and it was a great idea, I guess I just hoped for a bit more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
I thought I knew what I was getting here, handsome gentleman, missing maybe dead perfect wife, young innocent trying to fill her shoes.
The same story I'd read before, but done well.
Then it turns into something else, and eventually everyone's secrets come out.
A few surprises along the way, plot twists I did not see coming.
A really entertaining listen.
Narrators did and excellent job.
As did author, I won't hesitate to pick them up again
I would consider this to be your typical domestic thriller. We have Anna, who meets Cary while working at a therapist's office. Cary is a patient who has just lost his wife after she was abducted from her car. She hasn't been found yet and is presumed to be dead.
Anna is attracted to Cary but doesn't want to get too close for a number of reasons, however, after meeting his daughter, Harper, she finds herself instantly falling in love with the little girl and wanting to care for her, like a mother would. Cary and Anna get close, with Anna moving into Cary's lavish home, being part of his lavish lifestyle, and ultimately, a mother figure to Harper.
While staying at Cary's home (which is actually his missing wife, Presley's childhood home), things start getting a little weird for Anna. Neighbors are whispering, Cary is showing signs of abusive behavior, and Presley's mother, Juliet, treats Anna terribly. She believes she can never replace her daughter, Presley.
One day, Anna finds herself wandering into Presley's old room and finds her diary. In this diary, she describes the awful ways in which Cary has treated her. It causes Anna to wonder - Did Cary kill his wife? But most importantly, if the cops searched this room already, how has this diary, one that is in clear view, not already been found?
To top it all off, now Anna's neighbors are being murdered, one being a cop who seemed skeptical of Cary to begin with. What is really going on??
This thriller was good, but I'd say it wasn't much different from your average domestic thriller. We have a wealthy family, wealthy neighbors, jealousy, abusive husband, obsessed wife/ lover, nosey neighbors, super involved mother-in-law, and of course murder and planting of evidence. The plot twists towards the end were good, however, it is your stereotypical trauma response ending to a domestic thriller.
A solid 3 star read!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture, and Ruhi Choudhary for this ARC!
His Last Wife is a mysterious thriller involving secrets, lies, and more secrets! Captivating writing and realistic characters make this book easy to devour.
Anna starts to fall for Cary before finding out that his wife has gone missing and she recognizes the story from the news. She’s already fallen for his daughter and wants to stay in their lives. She finds out details from the missing wife’s disappearance are not what she was told and the wife’s mother is not going to make anything about this relationship easy. Anna has a secret of her own though. This was such a gripping story I could NOT put it down and read it in under 24 hours. I screamed at the twists and was totally blown away!!
The narrators Kelly Burke and Penelope Rawlins did an amazing job. I was so hooked from the beginning and loved their ability to express each character.
Thank you so much to Netgalley, Ruhi Choudhary, and Bookouture Audio for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I hope others enjoy this too on April 25th.
I have posted my review on Goodreads, in my Facebook book club, and will post a Tiktok review within the week before it releases.
Ruhi Choudhary is an author I have never heard of, and she knocked it out of the park with His Last Wife. Very complex plot for a genre, domestic thriller, which normally follows a pretty guessable formula. I seriously was enthralled, listened to it in the course of 24 hours, and GUESSED NOT A SINGLE PART OF THE ENDING. Well done, Ms. Choudhary.
So, why not a 5 star based on those few sentences above? The trigger warnings. At the start of the book the author, very wisely, warns the reader of the TW for domestic abuse, emotional abuse and sexual assault. Sigh. Had I known......
But, I requested this on Netgalley so I wanted to meet my read/review obligation. After finishing I returned to Netgalley and shame on them, or Bookouture Audio, for not mentioning ANY warnings. C'mon guys - allow the readers who have experienced trauma the common courtesy to pass over that which can be upsetting. That said, part of the premise of the novel was dependent on all the triggers, and I have read way worse, but, I would not have picked this one up if I'd been warned. To those who do not have the personal experience of assault and abuse, I imagine books must truly just be an escape, but many of us need the warnings in order to make the best choices for our emotional health.
Will I read this one again. Nope. Will I now scour every book Choudhary has written and try another? Yep.

Special thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio and Ruhl Choudhary for advanced access to His Last Wife, in exchange for my honest review.
Holy buckets, I loved this book! Ruhi Choudhary is a new to me author. I'll definitely be adding other books of hers to my tbr list.
His Last Wife is a psychological thriller that has so many twists, I was guessing until the very end!
Publication date for His Last Wife is April 25,2024.
4.5 rounded up, because the suburban drama of it all is so up my alley!
Perfect for fans of Frieda McFadden, Daniel Hurst, and secrets, HIS LAST WIFE follows Anna, a working class woman who marries a wealthy widower with an adorable daughter. Despite his wife's disappearance (and presumed murder) a year earlier, Carey quickly falls for Anna when he meets her through work. In a ridiculously contracted timeline, he introduces her to his daughter, moves her in, and has the child calling her mommy (the audacity!!). It doesn't take too long for Anna to learn that there's more to his wife's disappearance that he let on - but Carey isn't the only one with secrets.
There was some unrealistic expositional dialogue (especially one speech by Anna towards the end, which is full of revelations she wouldn't list out to someone who lived those things) and plenty of disbelief suspension required, but it was well-paced and kept me obsessed until the very end, so that deserves 5 stars.
There were so many seemingly unrelated questions that at one point I didn't believe Choudhary would be able to pull it all together. I'm pleased to say I was wrong! I will definitely read more from this author.
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
