Ruhi Choudhary is an author I have never heard of, and she knocked it out of the park with His Last Wife. Very complex plot for a genre, domestic thriller, which normally follows a pretty guessable formula. I seriously was enthralled, listened to it in the course of 24 hours, and GUESSED NOT A SINGLE PART OF THE ENDING. Well done, Ms. Choudhary.
So, why not a 5 star based on those few sentences above? The trigger warnings. At the start of the book the author, very wisely, warns the reader of the TW for domestic abuse, emotional abuse and sexual assault. Sigh. Had I known......
But, I requested this on Netgalley so I wanted to meet my read/review obligation. After finishing I returned to Netgalley and shame on them, or Bookouture Audio, for not mentioning ANY warnings. C'mon guys - allow the readers who have experienced trauma the common courtesy to pass over that which can be upsetting. That said, part of the premise of the novel was dependent on all the triggers, and I have read way worse, but, I would not have picked this one up if I'd been warned. To those who do not have the personal experience of assault and abuse, I imagine books must truly just be an escape, but many of us need the warnings in order to make the best choices for our emotional health.
Will I read this one again. Nope. Will I now scour every book Choudhary has written and try another? Yep.

Special thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio and Ruhl Choudhary for advanced access to His Last Wife, in exchange for my honest review.
Holy buckets, I loved this book! Ruhi Choudhary is a new to me author. I'll definitely be adding other books of hers to my tbr list.
His Last Wife is a psychological thriller that has so many twists, I was guessing until the very end!
Publication date for His Last Wife is April 25,2024.

4.5 rounded up, because the suburban drama of it all is so up my alley!
Perfect for fans of Frieda McFadden, Daniel Hurst, and secrets, HIS LAST WIFE follows Anna, a working class woman who marries a wealthy widower with an adorable daughter. Despite his wife's disappearance (and presumed murder) a year earlier, Carey quickly falls for Anna when he meets her through work. In a ridiculously contracted timeline, he introduces her to his daughter, moves her in, and has the child calling her mommy (the audacity!!). It doesn't take too long for Anna to learn that there's more to his wife's disappearance that he let on - but Carey isn't the only one with secrets.
There was some unrealistic expositional dialogue (especially one speech by Anna towards the end, which is full of revelations she wouldn't list out to someone who lived those things) and plenty of disbelief suspension required, but it was well-paced and kept me obsessed until the very end, so that deserves 5 stars.
There were so many seemingly unrelated questions that at one point I didn't believe Choudhary would be able to pull it all together. I'm pleased to say I was wrong! I will definitely read more from this author.
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
