I have been a fan of Tami Hoag for decades, so I had to read this one.
Set in the Louisiana bayou, the characters are interesting, the atmosphere is a dark yet charming, and the story is one that you can't put down. What a wild ride through the swaps.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I have read lots of Tami Hoag books over the years. This is my first of this series and I did not realize it was the third one until well into the book. Set in the bayou it is an interesting mystery, but not one of her best. I struggled through parts of it but maybe it is just me. As I read the reviews of others I saw mixed reviews so this one is also. If you are a Tami Hoag fan and certainly if you are familiar with this series I would encourage you to read this one. Thanks to #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
If something happens to someone with a less than stellar reputation is there anyone that will fight for them? In this case it is sheriff’s detective Annie Broussard. As a mother herself she can't help but want to help even though it complicates what was supposed to be a slow return back to work. Annie and her husband Nick don't go into anything slowly. Engaging read that you hope the entire time for a good ending.
I picked up this book not realizing it’s third in a series. The book is set in a small bayou town. A deceive finds a body. Another detective finds a couple missing people and they try to figure out if it’s all connected. I thought this was a decent police procedural but it did get bogged down in the politics of the office and the relaying of information from one person to another.
Thank you to netgalley for a copy of this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me an advance reader copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Was fortunate enough to listen to Tami Hoag on a panel before this ones was published! Really enjoyed reading this one & now have Tami Hoag on my TBR pile for all new titles & her back catalog as well!
Description
Small-town labels are hard to shake. Hometown hero. Fallen angel. Can anyone ever escape their past?
A murder victim dumped at the dead end of a lonely country road, face and hands obliterated by a shotgun blast, is not the way sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade wants to start his week. His only lead takes him to the family of a hometown hero suddenly gone missing. Marc Mercier left his home for a weekend hunting trip and hasn’t been seen since.
Meanwhile, sheriff’s detective Annie Broussard begins her first day back on the job after suffering a brutal attack by taking on the case of B’Lynn Fontenot, a mother desperate to find her grown son, a recovering drug addict. Robbie Fontenot has been missing for eight days, but the local police have no interest in the case, telling B’Lynn that an adult has the right to disappear, and a missing addict is no big surprise. But B’Lynn swears her son was turning his life around. Sympathetic to a mother’s anguish, Annie agrees to help B’Lynn, knowing she’s about to start a turf war with the city police.
As Annie searches for Robbie Fontenot and Nick investigates the disappearance of Marc Mercier, it quickly becomes apparent that nothing is as it seems in the lives of either man. And it’s still not clear whether either—or neither—of them might be the unidentified murder victim. Old jealousies and fresh deceits, family loyalties gone wrong and love turned sour all lay a twisting trail that leads deep into the Louisiana swamp, endangering all who cross the path of a bad liar.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! No spoilers. Beyond amazing I enjoyed this book so very much. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Could not put down nor did I want to. Truly Amazing and appreciated the whole story. This is going to be a must read for many many readers. Maybe even a book club pick.
While I have read many Tami Hoag books, this is my first Nick and Annie book. Wow! I absolutely loved this book. I could not put it down. A great story, a great thriller, a great mystery - all wrapped up in amazing character development. Thank youNeyGalley and thank you Tami Hoag.
This is the third book in the Broussard and Fourcade series. It took a few chapters for me to get invested in this book, but I am so glad I stuck it out. I love Annie and Nick and love how the cases they are investigating interweave. Great story from Tami Hoag.
It had been a while since I'd read a Tami Hoag book, and this one did not disappoint. A few seemingly separate stories coalesce suspensefully in this can't-put-it-down thriller.
I have read Tami Hoag before and really enjoyed her writing. This was no exception. This is book 3 of this series, I have not read the other 2 and was able to follow what was going on. I may go read the first 2 to get the back story of Nick & Anne.
I liked Anne and her husband Nick. I was impressed how Nick can be protective of his wife, but know that she is a cop like him.
This starts with a body found by the water, then a missing person, then another missing person. While it seems they are separate it isn't long before they are linked.
This book was a little slow at the start, but when it picked up, it was full steam ahead.
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the advanced copy
First few pages I wasn’t sure what I was reading. Then the story line developed and I totally enjoyed the who done it and the characters. Murders, missing persons and plenty of clues and outcomes to think about. Recommended read for mystery lovers.
The third book in the Broussard and Fourcade Series truly is a stand alone. I enjoyed reading it and have not yet read the first two book sin this series. This is a well written mystery with great character development and I look forward to the next installment in this series.
**Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review an electronic ARC of this book.
A small town, police procedural mystery. A husband and wife duo investigate a murder and disappearance in the Louisiana Bayou. The book starts slow with character introductions and the dialect distracted from the flow, however, I enjoyed the latter part of the story and the unexpected twists.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for the advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Hoag is back with a great book filled with many twists and turns. Lots of characters with singular stories that Hoag ties together with a masterful narrative. The final plot twist is completely unexpected. I loved it.
I did not enjoy BAD LIAR at all for a few reasons.
1) I have not read the previous stories in the series so I was a bit lost at times.
2) I'm from Louisiana and I just always have a hard time reading fiction or watching tv shows or movies set in Louisiana. The writers almost always get it wrong.
3) I did not like how the story would flip around and give background on the characters in the middle of conversations. It became too confusing for me.
Getting back to the Louisiana situation - so people here either speak all Cajun French or none. The random French words thrown in made the story seem to try to hard to give a Louisiana Cajun aesthetic. Unfortunately, it became too much for me.
Unless you live in the swamp, and I mean actual swamp, most people here are intelligent, not redneck or "coonass" and we speak English. It's true the Cajun French language is dying off, and that is sad, believe me, but the portrayals of people in the story just were not accurate.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for an e-copy of BAD LIAR to review.
I rate THE BAD LIAR three out of five stars.
Bad Liar by Tami Hoag is part of her Broussard and Fourcade series and It was full of suspense from start to finish. I have not read the previous books in the series and was able to enjoy the story with no issues and am excited to go back and read them. This story was engaging, full of secrets and twists. Married couple Nick and Annie, both part of the Sherriff’s office and investigating cases in a small town. It was a bit of a slow burn and dealt with some heavy issues. As each of them investigate separate cases, things may be as they seem.
I have not read Tami Hoag in a while, but after reading this book. I want to go back and read any book I have missed. The author did a great job with the characters and their journey.
Happy reading!
Annie Broussard and Nick Fourcade are back after a much shorter hiatus this time, and it's Annie's first day back at the Sheriff's office after the events of The Boy. She's anxious to get back but also still anxious about what happened, so when she immediately runs into a hysterical woman at the desk, Annie welcomes the distraction.
That "distraction"--a missing man with a history of drug abuse--takes her down a dark road of addiction, loss, and broken families. When Nick responds to a homicide, they have to wonder if their two cases are connected. Suddenly, this small community is missing several young men as well as harboring secrets and long-held resentments.
I love Tami Hoag, and I will likely read this book again since it's from one of my favorite series. However, the plot of Bad Liar was a little slow-going compared to her other novels. As always, Hoag's characters are perfectly, believably human: Annie's pain and fear as well as the missing man's mother's desperation and determination shine through nearly every paragraph. Well worth the read, even if it will wring you dry (and maybe bore you for a few minutes here or there).
Hi, I'm late to the Tami Hoag party - but I am SO HAPPY I have finally arrived.
Not only did I just randomly jump into this series, I did it blind. I have had many friends recommend this author to me, so I went for it. This book was nothing short of incredible and masterfully written. The overall mystery kept me guessing and left my head spinning, and the pace was perfect!! So fast and kept my attention the entire time.
I highly recommend this book (which can easily be read as a standalone!) I cannot wait to start from the beginning.
Received and ARC inn exchange of my honest review.
First, I did not know this was part of a series and yet what I like was it can be read as a standalone.
I honestly thought that this was not one of Tami Hoag's best. In fact, I will take that back and will say that I truly believe this was not her best according to me. It started very slow, that kind of slow enough for me to skip days. But I was wondering how the characters will end up in the end because the book has potential!
I dropped at 65% and called it quits! I am not giving up on Tami though. She is among the best. Regardless of me not finishing I still like the writing and plot of this book.
I both read and listened to this book and appreciated both formats and would recommend each highly. This was my first Hoag book and I loved both Broussard and Fontenot and their interactions with each other and the other characters. The mystery about who exactly the mutilated body in the swarm is amidst several missing men was a good one and kept me guessing. Even though this was the third in this series, I was able to jump in with all of the characters and Hoag did a great job of making me not feel that I was missing anything. I have already started the first book in this series and look forward to the next book. Thank you to Penguin Group, Brilliance Audio, and NetGalley for the early access for my honest opinion.
