I've read most of Ms. Wolfe's books so I did not hesitate in downloading The Hospital. The blurb was promising but I felt that the story was not as good as it promised. It has a slow start, the main character is slow to grasp any of the things that are really happening to her and the end/culprit was totally predictable. However, in spite of prior comments, the story is entertaining!
I thank Ms. Wolfe, her publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.
I love the premise of this story and the way the author was able to move from past to present so seamlessly was amazing. The story was unfortunately very slow in the first half which made it difficult for me to stay engaged. This led me to not feeling truly invested in the characters the way I would have liked. The ending was also quite predictable so it wasn't able to redeem the slow start for me. That why my official rating is 2.5 ⭐️.
The blurb sounded interesting and it started off strong but it was short lived. There is a dual storyline switching from past to present but it didn’t really work. It was done without notice which at times made the storyline hard to follow. The first half of the listen was very slow whereas the second half really ramped up the pace but it just got too far fetched and ridiculous and it really lost me. This one fell short unfortunately and just didn’t work for me.
2.5/5 🌟🌟/🌟
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review #TheHospital
Mind games are the name of the game in this psychological thriller. Emma wakes up not really knowing where she is at, nor how she got there. She cannot see. She cannot move. The only thing she knows is her name, and then suddenly she realizes that someone tried to kill her. The doctor assures her that once the swelling on her brain goes down she will regain her sight and movement. In the meantime it is full-on blackout terror for her. I cannot even imagine.
Her memories are scattered. As she begins piecing her memories together, she finds that nothing is as it seems. She also realizes that she can trust no one. Unfortunately, she is at the mercy of her caregivers, not even knowing if she can trust them. I cannot imagine a more terror-filled situation than being in total darkness without being able to move, especially considering she knows that someone wants her dead.
I was sucked into this book from the first few pages. I had some ideas of where I thought the story was going, but I was completely shocked at where it ended up at. It was a slow-burn psychological thriller which played with my mind. I found myself trying to decide who was trustworthy and who was not. Honestly, I did not trust anyone. I could see deceit in every person's demeanor and actions. Her career in acting meant she was in a world where it is every man for himself and a dog eat dog world. Stepping on those you care about in order to advance your career is just another day in the entertainment industry, and Emma soon realizes that any of her friends/family could be responsible.
Secrets, lies and betrayal play a heavy part in this drama, but the most scary part is that there is a lunatic in their midst. You just do not know which one it will be until the ending. If you like playing guessing games in your mysteries/thrillers, this book will be perfect for you.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The premise of this book was intriguing. I read the blurb, and was instantly interested. I enjoyed being in the main character, Emma’s head as she tried to piece together what lead up to her brain injury. She wakes up and chunks of her memory are missing, and she also can’t see. The action starts right away, and we are pulled right into Emma’s world as she tries to recover.
This story is delivered in dual timelines - pre-accident and post-accident. The timelines switch sometimes in the middle of a chapter with no indication, so I was lost at times with which timeline we were in. Listening to this on audio made this aspect even more of a struggle for me. It would take me a minute to realize that I was no longer in one timeline but in the alternate one. This story was also very repetitive. I’m sure that is the case with actual TBIs in the real world, but in a book setting, it was redundant and slowed things down for me. I have mixed feeling s on this one, but I did enjoy it. I just felt the execution could’ve been better. 3.5 stars.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A crazy twisted thriller that held my interest until the very end. Emma Duncan was an interesting character that never gave up trying to find out why she was in the hospital and why she couldn't remember what happened to put her there. She slowly remembered bits and pieces about her past loves and who she thinks is trying to kill her. She had a stalker and was thinking that they put her in the hospital.? i figured out the twist before it happened but I still really enjoyed the ending. I really enjoy Leslie Wolfe's books and will definitely be checking out her other books.
I’m a huge Leslie Wolfe fan and I have read every single one of her publications in portuguese. This time around, I grabbed the eARC NetGalley generously provided of her new work, The Hospital. But for a moment there, I thought I was reading some other author…
The concept is interesting and the plot engages. Unfortunately, I came across the core of the book way earlier than I probably should. And I also envisioned the twist in advance… The MFC is likable, but the time lines of present day and foggy memories intertwine in a complex and confusing way. It was hard for me to fully immerse in the book; the beginning was somehow difficult. But the ending was satisfactory and truly addictive!
I continue to favor Leslie’s series. Tess Winnett and Kay Sharp are at the top of my preferences. But this standalone was a little sub par. Nevertheless, an interesting plot.
I found some parts confusing I think because there was too many characters involved . I enjoyed the suspense and it was a good quick read.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review
Im quite disappointed in myself for taking so long to discover this incredible author.
The only positive side is that I now have a backlog to catch up on for the rest of summer.
Leslie Wolfe, is what nightmares are made of (in all the best ways possible)
Being a medical professional, I love reading books with a hospital or medical setting. As soon as the title rolled off my tongue, I knew I had to have this one. Little did I know, all I would get.
The twist?
It might snap your head right off your neck.
I read The Hospital, in one sitting, now I don't know what to do with myself...
Check out this teaser :
When I wake up, I know three things. My name is Emma. Someone tried to kill me. And I can’t remember who.
When I blink, my eyelashes brush against scratchy cloth. My fingers twitch, numb and distant. In the distance, sirens wail. I’m in the hospital.
I should be safe here, but I know I’m not. The last thing I remember is running, seeing an arm raised to strike… Why would anyone want to kill me?
Desperately, I piece together my scattered memories. I’m standing with my husband on sugar-white sand, our rings glinting in the sunlight. I’ll get better, and I’ll go home to him, and he will protect me.
But when he visits, his new girlfriend is on his arm. He tells me we got divorced three years ago, and my world falls apart. What else have I forgotten?
The only way I can keep myself safe is to uncover the answers buried deep in my mind. But as I talk to my visitors—listening to the gentle tones of the doctors and nurses, grateful for the care of my friends and family—I start to see the lies that contradict what I remember of my life.
They say it’s just my broken memory. But I know the shocking truth: I can’t trust a word anyone says…
When Emma wakes up not being able to move, see, or remember what happened to her she knows something is horribly wrong. As she starts to become more aware she tries to piece together what happened and tries to recover her memories. Filled with twists and characters that all seem suspicious, the story kept you engrossed until the end.
Overall I really enjoyed this story and it kept me invested in the story the whole time. I did think it was a little obvious to who the person behind Emma’s attack was but that didn’t spoil the enjoyment for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publishers for allowing me to read this advanced copy.
I found this one very suspenseful. It had me hooked trying to figure out what in the world was going on.
I enjoyed the plot line, we had a stalker, amnesia, and a whole lot more.
This is a new author for me but I will definitely be checking out more books. Many thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review this one.
Synopsis - Emma finds herself waking up in a hospital although she cannot see properly and doesn't really remember how she ended up in the hospital. The last thing Emma remembered was she was running away from someone. As Emma lies in the hospital with no recollection of her memories, she couldn't help but think how she ended up in the hospital and whether she should trust people or not...
Good points - I actually liked the plot of the story. The retrograde amnesia part coupled with the temporary blindness and not remembering your own name or how you ended up in the hospital is actually a great premise for a psychological thriller. The one that I also liked most in this book is the greatest twist revealed at the end, which was completely unexpected.
Bad points - I have read Leslie Wolfe's books before but unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy this book as much as I thought I should. For example, the author has written in complete Emma's POV yet while reading, you can't differentiate which is present day and which is past before the "accident" because it was all written in one chapter. As such, I didn't like the writing much because of this because as a reader it confused me and it took me sometime to realize that I was reading the past and not the present or vice versa. While what grabbed my attention was the second part of the book, the first part of the book was slow paced and I nearly got bored with the first part as it wasn't fast paced like I expected it to be.
Overall verdict - This was for sure is not her best book. I have read Leslie Wolfe's books where I have read in one go. It took a lot of time for me to get into the story and the timelines in this book was very confusing. However, despite the negative points, the premise and plot of the story itself was unique but I wished the author had executed it well which would have indeed made this book more compelling to read. Overall this book is worth 3.5 starts.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. This one is a twisty mystery of where is Emma and how she pieces together what has happened to her. It was a little slow for me, but when the ending approached, the pace picked up. It was a good read, and I will look for more by this author.
I liked this ok. As a thriller it fell a little flat but I think this would be great for thriller newbies.
It took me a little while to get into this book. It was a little confusing and a little creepy. You do want to keep reading it so you can figure out what's going on. The ending will surprise you.
I really enjoy the Kay Sharpe series by Leslie Wolfe, hope she is writing more, and I liked If I Go Missing. So I was pleased to receive an advanced copy of her latest stand alone book The Hospital.
I had a hard time with this one. it seem to DRAG for the first 60% of the book, then WHAM!
Emma has been attacked and when she wakes up, she can hardly remember what happened and she can't see.
When she starts to piece it together, and me as the reader I was slow to catch on as well. I found it a little unbelievable that all her visitors were able to continue the charade. I did not guess who the stalker was, but was also not surprised when he was revealed.
I do enjoy this writers work and look forward to the next book.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy
So tense! Wow, now I can breathe normally.
This book was so intense, jaw dropping, full of surprises and twists that kept me turning the pages so fast! This was my third book by Leslie and I know I will be reading more from her!
I loved the writing style, the plot, I didn’t have any idea where the story was going, even tried to guess a few times, and the big surprise at the end?!
It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, I couldn’t put it down!
You will love to get to know the main character Emma, her trauma, her emotions, her memories, her strength and beliefs.
You need to read this book!
I definitely recommend.
Thank you so much NetGalley, Leslie Wolfe and Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Hospital by Leslie Wolfe is a completely shocking psychological thriller with a breathtaking and unexpected twist.
This storyline is absolutely original. I never come across anything like this book, not even similar! It's so refreshing to get something completely original!
In the first half of the book, you are just wondering where all this is going and the second part comes in with twists and turns and it feels like a wild ride!
When Emma wakes up in the hospital she doesn't have a memory of what happened but she knows, someone was trying to kiII her. Now she is stressed that whoever tried it will return to finish the job.
She can't see and she can't move her body so she can't protect herself. All she can do is rely on Dr Sokolowski and nurses who look after her. Bit by bit her memory is returning. Will she remember who attacked her?
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this copy!
A thoroughly enjoyable read that has you guessing and then second guessing at every turn. Well paced throughout and with authentic characters.
