Christina is driving home in a very bad storm when she hits something. She gets out to investigate and doesn't see anything. Assuming she hit an animal, she continues on her way back home. In the middle of the night, the police knock on her door, telling her that her husband was involved in a hit-and-run accident on the same road where she just thought she hit an animal. Is it possible that she actually hit her husband?
This caught my attention from page one. I needed to know what actually happened that night. Did she hit him? Did someone else? Why was he out walking in such bad weather? SO MANY QUESTIONS!
Totally bingeable with a twist I didn't expect, this is my favorite AJ Campbell yet! (I know, I know... I say it every time, but she just keeps topping herself!)
One note: I would have liked a bit more clarity at the end of the novel regarding the accident.
This was a fun and fast-paced thriller with an interesting storyline. I was hooked from the beginning and enjoyed the unexpected twists towards the end.
With short, easy to read chapters, this book kept me guessing till the end. Each time I tried to guess a twist, the author proved me wrong. I kept doubting each and every character and wasn’t expecting that twist at the end.
I would recommend this book if you like to read domestic and fast-paced thrillers.
Thank you so much AJ Campbell, Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC copy!
AJ Campbell is a fantastic author….The story is very gripping and wow the ending is a big surprise. I thoroughly recommend this book, another thrilling read by this talented author
This book was fantastic! I liked that it had short chapters, easy to find a stopping point (if you dare). The book started out a little slow, then around chapter 20 slapped me in the face and had me hooked. It was an even pace from there on out. Every person was a suspect in my mind, having both reason and ability … I was shocked end and couldn’t wait to start sharing the plot (without spoilers) to all my bookish friends.
So basic plot, husband and wife are slightly estranged due to an incident where they teach. A female student came forward accusing the husband of being overly affectionate, causing a scandal, and him losing the opportunity to be headmaster (which the girl later retracts, but he still loses the opportunity of advancement). As you can imagine, this sets him into a depression, and things at home fall apart. The wife has 2 children from her previous marriage, a teenage daughter with cancer in remission, and a son who is going through the throws of hormones. Both of the children do not care for their step dad. Wife goes out to dinner with her twin brother, has a few drinks and as she’s driving home in a terrible storm, late at night & hits something. She thinks it’s an animal, gets out to check, and can’t find anything. Hours later she gets a knock on her door, it’s the police informing her that her husband is in critical condition, in the ICU, he was hit by a car and found in the middle of the road. Did she hit her husband?? The police find ring doorbell footage & cctv footage, showing her husband leaving the house. She assumes he’s going to the pub he walks to often when he can’t sleep … but the footage shows him going the opposite direction and then later being dropped off in a car at the pub … what is going on? As she starts to investigate, things get interesting! Did she hit her husband? Did her son? Did someone put a “hit” on her husband because of what a total a$$ he is? Is he having an affair? What is going on!?! He’s in a coma, will he wake up? Will he remember what happened? THEN a letter shows up, blackmail, who knows what, and can they be stopped? Such a great read!
We know from the beginning that Christina hits something and she thought it was an animal. She did get out of the car and looked around. She saw nothing and went on her way home.
When the police come to the house she yells out to Michael that the police are there. He doesn't greet them with her. That's when they tell her is in the hospital.
Christina isn't happy but would never harm Michael. she stood by his side after a scandal at the school , where he teaches. As the story kept going and we get glimpses of Christina's family and Michael, I wasn't sure what to think. Who is really lying and covering things up. Who is really Christina's friends are has her back. The ending though is not what I saw coming.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ebook to review.
Did I Kill My Husband?
By A. J Campbell
3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall I did enjoy this book and would recommend this to readers who enjoyed ‘The Woman in the Window’ as it gave me the same sort of vibes due to the excessive paranoia and drinking from the FMC. However unlike TWITW, this FMC wasn’t an unreliable narrator.
Even though the storyline itself was interesting, it felt dragged out throughout the book with no reveals to break it up and keep the reader engaged. It just felt like one prolonged dialogue of procrastination from the FMC.
The main plot twist happened at 85% and it had me shook, I never in a million years would have guessed it!
I’m not a massive fan of the title of the book as I feel it’s a spoiler for one of the only plot twists of the entire book which happened around 89%. If it was renamed to something like “A Marriage Full of Secrets” then it would still keep one of the plot twists a secret until the end of the book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and A.J Campbell for this ARC in return for an honest review
I will also be posting my review on Instagram, Goodreads and Amazon on publication day.
This page-turner quite literally begins with a bang. Christina is driving home in treacherous conditions when she hits something, but when she gets out to check, there’s nothing there. And then, in the early hours, the police turn up on the doorstep delivering shocking news - her husband Michael has been knocked down in a hit and run which has left him seriously ill in hospital.
This great premise is the catalyst for a romp of a read, as Christina tries to work out if she was the one who hit her husband, and, just as importantly, what he was doing on a country lane in the middle of the night when he was supposed to be at home minding her kids.
A J Campbell is the queen of the progressive complication and in this book she surpasses herself. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Christina as her life starts to unravel.
It’s not long before our poor protagonist is doubting her own sanity as she begins to suspect that everyone around her has something to hide.
Blackmail, the relationship between twins and siblings, guilt and betrayal are all explored in this belter of a psychological thriller that’ll have you turning the pages long into the night.
As usual with A J Campbell’s books, I failed spectacularly to sort the bad guys from the good guys, which is just how I like it. It was an easy five stars for me!
OMG!!! This book had me gripped from beginning to end.
My husband couldn’t get a word out of me it was such an intense read.
Well written this fast paced exciting read will keep you glued to the pages.
Well thought out plot that sends you reeling from the amount of twists & turns it delivers.
Love , lies, deceit & betrayal with good strong characters this book has it all.
I kept thinking I had a handle on what was going on & who did what, but the author changed my mind time & again.
Synopsis
Christina is regretting going out tonight as she gets caught up in an horrendous storm on her way home.
She can’t see a hand in front of her & she is sure that bump she felt must have been an
animal.
She stops & gets out to check as she doesn’t want to think of an animal lying injured.
Putting on the light on her phone she tries to look round but it’s absolutely lashing it down.
Getting back in the car she heads home to her family.
On arriving home she checks to see if her husband is yet again sleeping in the lounge. She notices a bottle on the table on the table that says he’s been drinking again so no doubt sleeping it off.
Closing the door quietly she goes to dry off & check on the kids.
Sometime later she hears a knock on the door & wonders who on earth is calling on a night like this.
Some police officers are standing there & are telling her that her husband is in hospital.
But how can that be as he is asleep in the lounge isn’t he ?
I absolutely loved this book it held me in suspense all the way through.
Definitely recommend!!
Fast pace, And very intriguing.
I simply didn't want to stop reading.
Did I kill my husband, This one we'll keep you glued to the pages. did I kill my husband Or did something else happen.
Okay, I really thought I had this figured out. A couple of times. Boy was I wrong.
Sinister, people happen all the time in life.
Things will happen you never expect.
Sometimes life will change and you have no control over it, But the question is, did I kill my husband.
This was really, really a good book. I have read almost every single book by this author and I have to say well. This was my favorite.
The perfect read, I highly recommend this author's work. She's fabulous..
Thank you to a NetGalley, AJ Campbell, and Bookouture for an ARC of this thriller.
It was enjoyable, but not the greatest. Lots of twists at the end. Not entirely predictable. I would recommend.
An amazing book with an amazing plot. I could not put the book down. I couldn’t believe the ending, it was the perfect ending that I did not see coming!
Overall great book, and I can’t wait to read more by this author.
Reviewed on instagram and Goodreads, links in bio.
I really enjoyed this book and was engrossed from page 1.
It’s a true page turner that delivers lots of unexpected twists.
It’s a fantastic domestic thriller that I’d definitely recommend.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookoture for this early release in exchange for my honest opinion. Unfortunately this book didn’t gel quite right with me. I love a thriller and the premise sounded really interesting but as someone who reads a lot of thrillers I found this one to be underwhelming.
This book follows Christina a wife and mother who may or may not have run over her own husband. There was a lot of potential but too many things were happening all at once that just didn’t end up making sense in the end at all. The ending was very rushed and just didn’t really hit for me at all.
If you are new to thrillers and need a quick read this may be for you but unfortunately I wasn’t the biggest fan.
This was such an easy book to binge. There were so successful many red herrings, I didn’t know what to believe. There was one aspect of the reveal that I NEVER would have seen coming. If you’ve read it, you know what part. Completely out of left field.
I still have so many questions, though! Which is a little frustrating, of course 😂
This is by far my favorite book of A.J. Campbell as of now. It was fantastic with super short chapters which I loved. Its filled with so many twists and thrills from beginning to end you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough. I highly recommend for all thriller lovers out there...you won't want to miss this one!!!!
Did I Kill My Husband? is an intense psychological thriller book that will keep you up all night!
Synopsis - Christina goes driving down in a dark road when she knocks on someone--or what she initially thought an animal. When she returned back home, Christina believed that her husband Michael is asleep. Then suddenly, the police knock on their house and tells Christina that Michael has had an accident and somebody has knocked him over without stopping. Immediately, Christina realized that it wasn't an animal she had knocked on but her own husband Michael? Did she actually kill her husband? And what was her husband doing in the dead night walking on the road?
Good points - There is suspense in the whole story. Christina is overwhelmed with guilt that she nearly ran over Michael. And at the same time, someone knows that Christina was the driver and thus start sending threatening messages. The suspense as to who might be responsible for threatening letters was interesting and intriguing. The writing was really great and I was put on the edge of the seat while reading this book. Not only that, the whole story was fast paced, and is a page turning novel that I couldn't simply put the book down!
Bad points - I am not exactly sure if I did like the ending or not or whether I actually liked the twist at the end but that was the only issue I had.
Overall verdict - this was actually a great thriller--this is the first book I have read from this author and I cannot wait to read more books from her. Worth 4.5 stars.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
Below is the blurb
"The police officer’s voice is steady as he tells me the news. ‘Your husband is in hospital.’ My heart pounds. I think about my children, safely tucked up in bed. What will happen to us if he loses his life? And more importantly… do the police know where I really was tonight?
Everybody thinks Michael and I are the perfect couple. But everybody is wrong.
Because my dear, lovely husband was at the heart of a scandal at the school where he teaches. He was cleared of any wrongdoing. At first I believed him. Now, I’m sure he’s been hiding something terrible.
But I can’t tell the police a thing. Because my husband isn’t the only one with secrets.
So, as I stand here knowing I have to tell my children that Michael is fighting for his life, I ask myself: what would be worse? For my husband, the much-loved local teacher, to die? Or for him to live, and for all his lies to come home again?"
I would rate this book as a "holiday read" ie, it was fairly enjoyable and didn't take too much concentration. I was convinced it was going to twist at the end in a particular way but it didn't go where I though it was going. I do have to question her decisions, but I suppose if she had chosen differently there wouldn't have been a story.
I received this book as an arc, and since I don’t read much mystery-thriller books I was excited to read it. I ended up giving this book 3.75 stars as it was a really good book, but some parts of it did confuse me. I loved the characters and the letters aspect but I felt like the letters could have been worked on more. I definitely do recommend this book to everyone as it’s a really good read!
This was a fast paced book that I read in about a day.
It was solid thriller that had a good twist at the end. I enjoyed it and will read more by this author.
Thank you!
I honestly don’t know how A.J. Campbell does it but once again she’s written another stellar 5 star read. Did I Kill My Husband starts with a bang and ends in an explosion.
It’s a dark stormy night and Christina is driving home after a drink at her brother’s pub when she suddenly hits something with her car. After getting out of her car and seeing nothing, Christina assumes it was an animal she’d hit. She decides to come back in the morning when it’s light out to inspect further. Hopping back into her car she drives home to her children and husband, who she assumes is asleep on the couch. But a few hours later when the police show up at her door to inform her that her husband is in the hospital in a coma after being the victim of a hit-and-run, Christina’s world shatters. She thought her husband was home asleep on the couch. Could she have been responsible for his accident? Surely she’d know if she hit a human? It must have been a deer. Or was it? But if she confesses her doubts to the Police they would never believe her that is was an accident. They would think she intentionally hit him and left him for dead. And she’d been drinking too! Her life would be destroyed. She can’t tell them the truth. She must hope and pray that she didn’t kill her husband.
As per usual, when reading an A.J. Campbell book I was certain I’d figured out the plot twists. But it was a rather premature assumption if not a little arrogant of me. I had by no means figured it out. The plot twist was jaw-dropping and completely unexpected. Well done Ms. Campbell. You’ve fooled me once again. I honestly don’t know how each book she writes is so unique and full of twisty turns and ups and downs. If you are looking for a propulsive, engaging, heart stopping thriller then you need to grab a copy of Did I Kill My Husband by A.J. Campbell.
Thank you A.J. Campbell, Bookouture and Netgalley for my arc of Did I Kill My Husband, in exchange for my honest review.
