I've read one novel by AJ Campbell previously and this one didn't disappoint either. It's not newsbreaking, but still gripping and enjoyable. It has an unrelatable narrator who keeps secrets which naturally leads to a lot of twists. As per usual in domestic thrillers, the husband is a dirtbag, but Campbell just does it so well! Every trope seems new and interesting with her writing. A fast-paced and good domestic thriller for reads of Freida Mcfadden and B.P. Paris

This was my first book by A.J. Campbell. I feel neutral about this one. It has a lot of good ratings and others seem to think it was really "twisty." For me, it was just okay. I think it dragged out longer than it should have. Some parts I was eager to keep reading and others, I just wanted it to end. One of my suspicions was false. I definitely did not guess the ending. While a shocking ending is normally satisfying for me, I didn't feel that way about this one. I'm not sure if I can put my finger on it. BUT I did like the easy style of writing. The author has a lot of good reviews on her other books and I do think I will give another one a try.

In the shadowed corridors of scandal and suspicion that enveloped the school where Michael and Christina, a seemingly idyllic couple, both worked, Michael's exoneration should have been the end of their nightmare. Yet, as the dust settled on the cleared allegations, the fabric of their perfect union had already begun to fray, leaving their perfect marriage not so perfect. Christina, once unwavering in her trust, noticed a chilling transformation in Michael following his forced withdrawal from a coveted promotion— a change that cast a sinister pall over their love.
As nature unleashed its fury in the form of a tempest so fierce it seemed to mirror the tumult within Christina's heart, her struggle to navigate the treacherous path home was only the beginning of a night that would forever alter the course of their lives. In the blinding rain and engulfing darkness, a harrowing thud beneath her wheels sent her heart racing— a presumed victim of the storm's wrath. Yet, when she ventured into the darkness nothing but the void greeted her, leaving an eerie silence in the wake of the unknown. The specter of dread barely had time to settle before the ominous knock of fate echoed through her home, with police bearing news of Michael, now clinging to life in the ICU from a hit-and-run, unknowingly at her hands. In a maelstrom of panic and fear, Christina's secrets began to bury her deeper with each passing day.
Tormented by visions of becoming a widow by her own doing or worse, facing the man she loved with the truth of that stormy night, Christina confided in her brother Ted, seeking a shred of solace in her spiraling world. Yet, unbeknownst to her, the shadows of her confession extended far beyond Ted's sympathetic ear. Someone else was lurking in the periphery of her confidence, leaving Christina more terrified than any storm.
In the creation of "Did I Kill My Husband," AJ Campbell masterfully crafts characters with a realism that resonates through their meticulously depicted emotions and actions. The protagonist, Christina, transitions from an initial shock and confusion to a gradual acceptance of her circumstances, all the while grappling with burgeoning uncertainty and anxiety. As the narrative progresses, her fear intensifies, reflecting the complexity of her emotional journey. Similarly, Michael, another central figure, consistently behaves in a manner suggesting he harbors secrets, even from the authorities, evoking suspicion and distancing himself from Christina whenever confronted. This nuanced portrayal extends to the secondary characters as well, who are imbued with a range of emotions, both overt and subtle, adding depth and authenticity to the storytelling.
"Did I Kill my Husband?" is a masterful example of suspenseful storytelling that captivated me from the very first page to the last, meticulously keeping an even pace that expertly built tension without ever feeling rushed or dragging. The narrative is cleverly woven with twists that are both unpredictable and ingeniously plotted, ensuring that I was constantly on my toes, eager to turn the page and uncover the next shocking revelation. The author skillfully plants clues throughout the narrative, each one seemingly innocuous at first glance, but upon reaching the climactic, twisting reveal, I found myself marveling at how each piece was a crucial part of the puzzle. This book is a rollercoaster of tension, with each chapter ratcheting up the suspense, making it utterly impossible to put down. The balance of maintaining an even pace while continuously surprising readers is no small feat, yet "Did I Kill My Husband?" achieves this with aplomb, making it a standout read that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned.

Did she or did she not? And why was he on the road so late at night? It's a gripping novel with enough twists you won't see coming.

My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫

Christina and her brother Ted are at a pub having a drink and a chat about Christina's husband, Michael. From their conversation it seems like the relationship was on the rocks and that Christina hasn’t been happy in her marriage. On her drive home from the pub, the weather was terrible, and she hit something. A rabbit? Maybe. Til she gets home and shortly after police are knocking at her door. She finds out that Michael was a pedestrian victim of a hit and run...on the very road she taken home. Did she kill her husband?

This was a very quick read, it kept me engaged from start to finish. I had some favorite characters such as Ted, and Abi. Ted is seriously the brother we all want. He is completely devoted to his twin sister, Christina. Abi is a sweet teenage girl who is mature beyond her years. She is constantly checking in on her mom to see how she is doing, many times both of Christina’s children must be the parent for their mom while she deals with everything she’s going through

As with other books from AJ, this was very twisty. I had a few guesses as to what the end would be, even second guessing myself, but I did not see the end coming. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a quick read that keeps you on your toes from start to finish. This was my third book of AJ’s and she has proven yet again to never disappoint.

I was approached by author AJ Campbell to read and review her latest book, Did I Kill My Husband. I just finished this engaging thriller and I'm so glad that I said yes.

A woman who hits something in the road one dark and rainy night. Even after getting out to look, she's unable to identify what she hit. Hoping it's an animal, she returns home to her husband and children. The next morning finds police officers at her door stating that her husband was involved in an accident; he was run over last night and left for dead. As if the thought that she may have killed her husband isn't enough, she soon begins receiving blackmail threats in her mailbox.

This was a really fun and well-written thriller. I read it in a day because I was dying to find out what was going on. Four stars, I highly recommend this one!

This fast paced thriller was definitely a page turner. Christina’s investigation in her husband’s life Micheal after he was a victim of a hit and run kept me at the edge of my seat especially that with each discovery we find out that he’s not who he truly is.

Full of twists and turns, I finished this book in one setting, it was really hard to put down. The crazy twist at the end took me by surprise, I wasn’t expecting that. I highly recommend.

It’s always a good idea to set aside some time to read a new book by A J Campbell and that’s what I did this Bank Holiday weekend. It turned out to be an excellent idea as I binge read this book in less than 24 hours, some of that time spent on a deck chair in the garden. Bliss!
I was totally gripped from the first chapters. Christina is driving home after a heart to heart with her twin Ted about her worries over her marriage to Michael, her second husband. She is concerned whether she can trust him after allegations made several months earlier by a 6th form pupil he was teaching even though the matter was dropped. Something in their relationship has changed since this happened. As she is driving home in terrible, wet weather she hears a thump at the side of her car and stops to see what she has possibly hit. On finding no sign of anything she continues home. Her children are home but Michael is not and he has not taken his car. In the middle of the night she is woken by two police officers who say that her husband has been the severely injured in a hit and run.
Christina immediately panics. Could she have hit Michael on her drive home? If so, if she voices her fears, would she be believed that it was really an accident? She had a large glass of wine with Ted at the pub, so if the police ask for a breathalyser test she may be over the limit. All these thoughts race through Christina’s mind and in a split second she decides to say nothing.
As one lie results in many more, Christina finds that she can’t go back without implicating not only herself but also Ted.
As the story unfolds I was gripped by the twists and turns of the plot. I never guessed the end even though I had plenty of theories and this story had me on the edge of my seat with its fast pace. 5 stars from me! Many thanks to the author and NetGalley for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Story kept me guessing, with enough suspense to keep me turning the pages. A very well written book, with a sting in the tail ending.

3.5 stars

Christina on her way home hits something/somebody on the road. She gets to know later that her husband was in an accident and the driver fled away. A misled decision then leads to the plot of the book.

A storyline with great promise and mystery as we not only see Christina trying to cover up the accident but also the secrets the husband has been keeping. As the story progresses, you start to guess what is actually happening because most mysteries that involve a couple lead to the same arc. There were red herrings given by the author into who else is involved so the final reveal was not surprising but kind of disappointing. Mind you it disappointed me because we didn't expect that to come from the said person.

My only hitch was the endless anxiety issues Christina undergoes every time. Sort of drags the line. Overall a good one time read.

I thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this E-Arc and I am leaving my review voluntarily.

What an absolutely outstanding read. So many times I thought I'd it all figured out and then more doubts set in. I was terrified for Christina, I felt like she couldn't trust anyone. I was doubting absolutely everyone in her family and not trusting them at all. Then BOOM along came that ending! A complete suprise which is shocking! Definitely will be recommending this book!

I love AJ Campbell’s writing style: short chapters that keep up the momentum and draw you in and the language and characters are always relatable. This new book does not disappoint with plenty of ‘clues’ and possibilities that have you thinking you might know what the twist is going to be. Chances are you haven’t got it right though. An easy read that I had to make myself put down so that I could savour the story rather than rush through for once! Happy to recommend this great book from an author that keeps getting better and better.

I received an ARC in return for this honest review. All views are my own.

Did I Kill My Husband
by AJ Campbell
Pub Date: May 29, 2024
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the arc of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
The police officer’s voice is steady as he tells me the news. ‘Your husband is in hospital.’ My heart pounds. I think about my children, safely tucked up in bed. What will happen to us if he loses his life? And more importantly… do the police know where I really was tonight?
Everybody thinks Michael and I are the perfect couple. But everybody is wrong.
I’ll tell the police that I would never, ever hurt my husband. But will they believe me?

This is a heart-racing thriller that you won’t be able to put down! Perfect for fans of The Housemaid, Jeneva Rose and Shari Lapena.
I was convinced on more than one occasion I had this all solved and knew exactly who had done what and was completely wrong…. the sign of a great thriller….it is very cleverly written by this author
It is a very engaging story that once started I pretty much read in one go as there was little option not to as I wanted to know the outcome

I liked this book. I liked the short chapters and the cliffhangers after every chapter, making the reader want to continue just one more chapter. I did end up guessing the ending.

There was no real shock and the middle got a little draggy for me. While, a good read, not something that made me over excited for it.

Did I Kill My Husband, by AJ Campbell is a domestic thriller centered around a woman named Christina who is driving home in a raging summer storm and runs over an animal. She comes out to check, but can't see what she hit due to the intensity of the rain, and heads home. Later, two police officers show up at her door, telling her that her husband has been hit by a car and is in the ICU at the hospital.

The reader is taken through the story then through short chapters as Christina finds out there may be more to her husband than she thought as she peels the onion to her husband's life.

I liked this book and finished it in two days. It definitely was one of those where I stayed up to read the ending. I liked the short chapters and the cliffhangers after every chapter, making the reader want to continue just one more chapter. I didn't end up guessing the ending, which was great because there were so many red herrings placed in the novel. I for sure thought I knew who it was, but was completely off base!

There was no real shock for me as there are with other novels, and the middle got a little draggy for me. While, a good read, not something that made me gasp. Overall, well written and good storyline.
