All the Hidden Monsters by Amie Jordan is a debut urban fantasy novel about a werewolf and warlock teaming up together to investigate a string of werewolf murders.
I enjoyed the world of All the Hidden Monsters as it reminded me of other series that I had enjoyed when I was younger, like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and Wizards of Waverly Place in the sense that it was a magical world that is being kept a secret from the humans. The magical inhabitants of this world mostly live Upstream, but some do choose to live among the humans Downstream. Sage and Pia are two such magical creatures who choose to live in London, as they were both originally human before becoming a werewolf and a poltergeist, respectively. Sage always wanted to become a police officer and after being turned, she continued to aspire to join the police force equivalent in the magical world. However, the magical police is exclusively made up of warlocks due to their magic and immortality, and she is continually rejected by the police chief. But when Sage finds a lead regarding a string of werewolf deaths, she is thrown into a partnership with Oren, an infamously powerful and ruthless warlock.
This book had a solid mystery and it was an enjoyable read all throughout. I definitely recommend this book to the fantasy girlies as I think the enemies to friends to lovers dynamic is done wonderfully with Oren and Sage. Oren's aloof nature and morally grey past makes him prime Booktok boyfriend material. He's even hundreds of years older than the heroine! But jokes aside, the relationship was just done wonderfully well and it had a lot of heart with how Oren warmed to both Sage and Pia. I would definitely continue this series as I'm curious how it will continue, especially in regards to the romance as warlocks are immortal and werewolves are not...
Thank you to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for providing a copy of the audiobook for review. I enjoyed Kate Dobson's performance as the narrator and her English accent and delivery of British humour helped immerse me in the setting and characters.
From start to finish, I was immersed in this one. The characters are fantastic, there's an intriguing mystery regarding murdered werewolves, and there's enough character stuff to get me invested without slowing down the action.
Sage is a Werewolf who wants to be a detective, Oren is a warlock detective who prefers to work alone. When a friend of Sage turns up dead, the two must work together to solve the case.
I just loved all of this. The premise was so original, and the characters so full of life (despite some of them being dead). The story flowed so neatly, and the narration really brought the characters a lot of warmth. There's a decent pace that keeps the story moving forward, while still making time for us to get to know everyone.
I really enjoyed the narration, too; I thought it was done well.
This was a unique urban fantasy and I'd love to read more set in this world.
I don’t know why I always find it so hard to write a review for a book that I love, I always imagine it’ll be so much easier and then when it comes to it I have no idea where to start.
I loved everything about this book, it immediately sucked me in and had all the right elements to keep me hooked, supernatural beings, murders needing to be solved, and fantastic characters.
The story is amazing, Sage, a werewolf, discovers her friend murdered and manages to force Oren, a warlock who likes to work alone, to let her help investigate. The world-building was incredible, Sage and Oren live in Downside, the home of most supernatural beings, but they were mostly investigating Upside aka our world, where some supernaturals choose to live. I enjoyed exploring Downside and its differences through Sage, who is part of both worlds.
This made the relationship between Sage and Oren fascinating, two supernaturals who are in some ways completely opposite and closely linked in others. They both feel like monsters and struggle to show people their real selves and at first, they clash. Soon enough though, even with their differences, they grow to respect each other and then form a close relationship.
This is helped along by P the poltergeist who, with no need to be afraid of anyone puts up with no-nonsense, likes to look after everyone and pull them together. I thought all the characters were great but I have to say I have a little soft spot for P and how protective she is over Sage, and her snark.
I have to say that I was kept guessing until the very end about who was committing the murders and why, it was very clever though. There were some other revelations throughout the story that made it very hard to put this book down, it has a lot of action and enough secrets to keep you gripped.
The narration was fantastic, I thought it was brilliant that Kate Dobson was able to have so many distinct voices and accents for the characters, it brought the story to life and helped with the sense of place.
I enjoyed this book so much that I’m hoping that there is more to come from these characters, All the Hidden Monsters is a book that I would highly recommend. Loved it.
I loved this mix of well plotted urban fantasy/mystery featuring well rounded characters and set in an original world building.
Good storytelling and an excellent narrator
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This was fine! It's passed the time and it was fun enough but really stood out to me.
I really wanna to live it but overall I found myself uninterested in the characters and I wasn't really bothered what happened to anyone.
This was such a wild ride of a book, with warlocks and werewolves it follows sage the werewolf and oren who is a warlock trying to solve the mysterious deaths of several werewolves around town. Oren is part of what is essentially a paranormal police force and after sage persists they pair up to solve these cases.
They meet at the site of Sages friends death Lucy, who appears to be the first of many to die under mysterious circumstances. <spoiler>Once they figure out its silver </spoiler>, they aim to hunt down who is responsible for committing such hurt.
It deals with themes such as grief, friendship, and fear, both of self and who you can trust. I really enjoyed how Oren and Sage grew as a pair not only to solve the mysteries they were faced with but with how they grew to truly trust and care for each other.
Overall I would definitely recommend this to those wanting a paranormal mystery!
Sadly I didn't get you listen to the whole story due to technical issues and the app kept crashing so I can't comment on story but I can comment on narration. I would have loved to get to the end of the story as the premises is great and very different from some of my most recent reads.
The narrator in the audio story of All the Hidden Monsters had a clear sounding voice that was easy to listen to. It was read at a nice pace and easy to follow. I would listen to other books by their narrator.
This book worked pretty well with me. I'll have to re-read it before the second instalment comes out, because there are lots of interesting side characters and they are worth revisiting. The plot is engaging and the story absolutely delivers what it promises: a great entertainment, twists and turns, friendship and more. A perfect YA fantasy.
This was fine. I've been unwell which hasn't helped me to enjoy much but I think this was just one of those audiobooks that didn't grab me - there were quite a few characters to keep track of and I just struggled a bit to keep up with them all to the point that when we had the reveal I didn't really care because I'd barely paid attention to that character when they were mentioned previously.
4.5 stars
ALL THE HIDDEN MONSTERS is the first book in a YA paranormal murder mystery series about a world of warlocks, werewolves, ghosts, and more living underneath the human one.
Sage is determined to find out the truth, even if it means making a bad bargain with the paranormal police - and getting a grumpy partner in the deal. This is a murder mystery that escalates in severity with more bodies and a killer who taunts them. It's the more vicious side of paranormal, lots of literal fangs and teeth and dark pasts.
The relationship between Sage and Oren gives the book its heart, two characters with lots of guilt and heavy pasts who do not get on but slowly learn to trust and open themselves up. I loved watching them slowly, grudgingly begin to spill their secrets and heal because of it.
P, Sage's ghost of a housemate, was my favourite character though. She's smart and compassionate and takes no nonsense, standing up to the big scary Oren without a single thought. She's the loving bully of the group.
Both Sage and Oren get chapters in the book, though Sage has a lot more page time than Oren. I really liked this because Sage is the teenager, while Oren is a centuries old mage, and her storm of emotions helped this book stay in the YA category.
Kate Dobson narrates both perspectives. I whizzed through the audiobook, pulled in by the story and the narration. It was a lot of fun, I wanted to find out whodunnit, and I wanted to see where the relationship went.
I will be reading the next book!
My review will only appear bias since I wrote the book - but. have to leave a review so my NetGalley score doesn't go down.
But rating the audiobook objectively isn't hard - I have very strong opinions on narrators, and they make or break a book. I DNF more audiobooks than hard copies if the narrator isn't right.
Kate Dobson is all that I could have hoped for when I heard we were getting an audiobook - which isn't guaranteed as an author. I was very clear (and grateful to Bolinda for honouring my request) that I wanted an authentic Northern accented narrator as the story is set in Manchester, and Kate Dobson was perfect. Plus, her ability to switch up her accents, tones and inflections easily brings extra depth to my characters and makes the conversational exchanges very easy to follow, which is what worried me most before I heard the audiobook.
I loved listening to this audiobook as simply a listener for the first time. I cannot wait to hear what Kate does with book 2.
Congratulations to Kate and to Bolinda for the great production of this audiobook.
This is a superbly entertaining YA fantasy audio book. Police murder procedural - if the police are warlocks and the co-opted assistant is a werewolf. The characters are strong, yet have so much hurt in their very long and not so long respective lives. So many surprises to be discovered. Maybe in their search for a killer they can find some self-forgiveness for their own crimes. I really liked Sage’s witty conversations with Oren as the tension rises - tension in many guises. Thank you to Bolinda Audio and NetGalley for the audio ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
I loved this one and I’m ready for the next one! I listened to the audiobook basically nonstop beginning to end. I loved all the character details, so descriptive that they feel real. Very fun new series, highly recommend!
Thank you Netgalley, Amie Jordan and Belinda Audio for the audio Arc of All the Hidden Monsters
Narrated by Kate Dobson
This is my first book by Amie Jordan as I like a good mystery thriller mixed in with warewolves./ witches and warlocks. What is there not to love?! All the Hidden Monsters is a great paced mystery thriller surrounding Sage, who is trying to figure out what world she belongs in. One of her closed friends who was found dead, sparks off an investigation and Sage is determined to get to the bottom of who is killing werwolves. Working closely with Oren, a warlock, they delve into the darker side of who is killing.
I love the dynamics between Oren and sage and the characters are well fleshed out. The narrative is very well paced and I enjoyed listening to Kate Jordan as she kept the characters individual.
Thank you to net gallery for letting me review this book. The narrater of the book brings this book to life as the way they speak and do all the different character voices is so well done and so well executed I really liked this narrator. I really enjoyed reading this book as it was such a great book and the characters in this book are so well written and so well described I really liked the names of the characters as they were so unique. The storyline of this book was told so well and I liked how the author described everything in this book down to the last detail. To say this is a debut book it was fantastic to read and I will pick up more work by this author. The only bit that let me down was that I thought the ending was a bit rushed sadly as there was so much going off and it was so faced paced that I kinda got lost in the last 20 pages. I will definitely be reading the 2nd book in this series xxx
I can’t put my finger on what it was about this book that I loved so much but I will try my best to put it into words. I’m not usually a crime fiction kinda gal but throw in the fantasy element and I’m 100% here for it. We’ve got warlocks, werewolves, sphynxes, poltergeists, ghosts and more amongst the characters in this urban crime romance (not a phrase I thought I’d write) and Amie Jordan created a world for them beneath our world, which is a fascinating concept.
Oren is an unapproachable, powerful warlock working for what is, essentially, the magical police. Sage is a determined young werewolf trying to edge her way into a job in the police force, and she may finally have the opportunity. They make an unlikely pair but with murders to solve, it’s all hands on deck to piece together the clues and the trails of evidence and find out who the serial killer is and why they’re murdering people. This story has dark back stories, reluctant allies, cooking poltergeists and found family. There’s also a fair bit of gore, as you might expect. I couldn’t get enough of following Oren and Sage through this story, slowly discovering pieces of their past and watching their rocky acquaintance develop through the book as their investigation progresses. There’s the smallest hint of romance but it’s so delicious I can’t even fault being teased right to the end of the book. It brought me too much joy seeing Oren and Sage’s relationship slowly change and you better believe it has me desperate to get my hands on Jordan’s next book so we can see where the story takes us.
I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook and it was beautifully narrated, with great voices for our main characters and for the dialogue from other characters.
I received a free copy of this book. All views are my own.
This book was not for me. I found it very difficult to get into the story and I didn't like the characters enough to really care about what they were doing. There were many clichés throughout and a lot of moments that made me cringe in embarrassment. However, I will admit that although I am a young adult, this book was aimed at teenagers and young adults, so I'm sure that there are many readers younger than I am who would like it.
Great start to a new series - excellent twists, loved the world building and sense of community/found family.
Sage and her family went camping on a full moon - sadly, Sage was the only one to survive - and turned to a werewolf as a result.
Now in her older teen years, Sage wants to be part of the arcane version of the police - but as a werewolf, she is denied entry. Until paired with the outcast, Oren. Together they investigate the death of Sage's friend, Lucy. With the suspicious deaths of other werewolves, Sage and Oren must uncover the truth.
I loved these characters - and cannot wait for their return!

Thank you to Bolinda Audio and NetGalley for sending me a free ALC in exchange for an honest review.
10/10 - Absolutely no notes. Perfection. I need more in this universe.
The way Jordan writes about the human domain versus the supernatural added a unique twist on the typical urban fantasy where we see humans live in a civilised manner while supernatural beings use candles and forsake all modern accommodations. The world created 'downside' is almost a mirror of the topside world, with their own pubs, markets, bands and media and there was something about these small details that really brought the story to life.
The mystery was engaging and kept the listener on their toes, with multiple twists and turns throughout. The character of Oren carries an air of mistrust throughout, tot he point where I was almost certain that he was the killer.
The narrator - Kate Dobson - did an incredible job of bringing each character to life and is perhaps the first narrator I've come across who didn't commit some sort of hate crime with her Scottish accent.
If you loved Being Human, this is the book for you.
