A true paranormal thriller that keeps you guessing!

The Girls on Floor 13 is the third book in the Detective Maria Miller Series. Maria is a go-getter that cares deeply for those in her life and in her cases. Her witty and rough-around-the-edges partner, Frankie, team up to solve a horrific murder on floor 13 of a swanky hotel in New York. This murder quickly turns into something much more, and the pair of detectives need to enlist the help from an unlikely bunch.

Things I liked:
- While this book is part of a series, you do not need to read the prior two to read this one, which I highly appreciate. You still should though!
- The author wasn’t afraid to randomly and without warning be gruesome.
- So many female characters that slay the day away (I love you Isabelle).
- Biased, but my dog’s name is used in this book and I love it (Emerson).
- Heavy on imagery and description. An example, “Nearby a receptionist was fussing over an elderly couple seated on two of the tired, velvet armchairs near to the elevator.” As a reader, this is SO important to me and the author executed this wonderfully. I was able to run this book through my mind like a movie.
- References to the Cecil Hotel and to Freddy Krueger.
- The relationship between Emilia and Missy. So sweet and wholesome.
- Harrison is cool.
- We truly had a beginning and an end, nothing felt like it was still hanging in the air at the end. Enough to maybe have another book in the series…?🤭

Things I didn’t like:
- The vocabulary. It is apparent immediately that the author is British and this story takes place in New York. It was slightly distracting reading about New York residents, especially cops, speaking in British slang and phrases. I also was under the impression that “broad” was kind of a derogatory term these days, and this word was used to describe women many times throughout the book. Another thing I want to mention - at times, the characters got really confusing. The switching between characters and references towards them wasn’t always clear. We would read about “him” or “her” or “them” but not know who the author means. Often I was able to reread the last page or two and I’d be able to figure it out, but it did mess with the flow of my reading.
- What’s up with the feet!!!!
- Frankie. Why is he such a man😭
- The detectives didn’t really feel like detectives. Maybe it’s because they’re part of a special unit but they didn’t seem like detectives to me.

This book wins 4/5 stars for me. I’d like to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this one!

This new volume, the third in the Maria Miller series, is set in a creepy hotel inspired by the NY Chelsea. I loved all the stories and legends, as well as the whole cast of characters. As always, the chemistry between Maria and her partner Frankie made their dialogues sparkle, but also the supporting cast has their own voices, including some who are not human and/or technically alive. There were a lot of twists that I wasn’t expecting, keeping me glued to the pages. The descriptions of the hotel make for creepy reading and some familiar faces are back. I’m not sure where (and if) the series will go from here but there seems to be more books down the road. I hope that they are.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Storm Publishing.

This is the 3rd in the series of Detective Maria Miller. If you are into Paranormal this is the book for you. Phifer has done a great job in keeping you riveted that you don’t want to put the book down. What I like about this series are the likeable characters and how they interact with each other. Not only do you have the main characters, Detectives Miller and Conroy, you have the hauntings that will blow your mind. Two teenagers have been found dead at the Parker in room 1303. It is up to Detective Maria Miller and Detective Frank Conroy to find out what happened to these young ladies without them being killed by something unknown. Thank you to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for providing an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

My first book by Helen Phifer, and it worked very well as a stand alone novel, although I am aware this is the 3rd in this series.

I am not usually a paranormal book lover but I did enjoy this one. It was well written and overall a good read. I felt it was a little predictable at times so I'd give it 3.5 stars.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Parker hotel is a ghost hunters dream. A run-down historic New York hotel with stories and legends dating back decades.
Dory Painter and her best friend Michelle Carter got a little too curious and found themselves wrapped up in the Parkers grasp.
Detective Maria Miller is called to investigate the latest mysterious murder with her partner Frankie. Can they uncover all of the secrets The Parker has to hide?

A twisty, paranormal thriller that I loved from the prologue to the last chapter! The third book in the Maria Miller detective series but can be read standalone. There were a few references to the previous books but it did not take away from the plot having not read them. I really enjoyed Maria and Frankie's friendship/detective-partner relationship.
I enjoyed the characters from Maria's love interest to the hotel staff.
The comical banter mixed with the unfolding of plot details was a nice breather between the scary. Overall great read!

The third in the Det. Maria Miller series.
With lore from both the Chelsea Hotel and the Cecil Hotel thrown in the mix - this is a creepy ghost/demon story.
I loved the series and recommend it to anyone who loves creepy!

This author is fantastic writer love reading her crime books,I am not really into many paranormal or ghostly reads as I dont believe in it,ive read the first two books and found this one is the best,I love the main characters Detective Maire Miller and Frankie on there way to a crime seen at a haunted hotel where the room was very creepy was it a sinister shadow or a killer at large?Maire sees a woman in blue and whoever sees her is certain of death...Im hoping its not the last of this series, this book so engaging and cant wait for more of her books brilliant read...this deserves the five stars...

The third (and possibly last) in this enjoyable, easy reading series about a Mulder and Scully type partnership investigating murders that have a supernatural element to them.

Here the story is based in a creepy old hotel in NYC where murder, demons and ghosts are a plenty.

I’ve enjoyed this series immensely. Short, easy and fun reads that don’t take themselves too seriously but, alas this was my least favourite of the trilogy.

The story itself was fun but some of the dialogue was just downright weird. Characters were saying the oddest of things that didn’t seem natural at all. That with too many cliched lines from characters that just felt incredibly lazy.

Also there is a saccharine sweet overtone to this one. It’s not hinted at. You are hit over the head with it. I didn’t care for it at all.

So enjoyable if flawed and certainly the weakest of the three, it’s still worth your time as you will read it in no time at all.

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

Detective Maria Miller and partner Frankie are called to the Parker hotel where 2 teeanager girls are discovered dead, with their feet missing. Perplexed as this doesn’t seem a supernatural case, however, soo the Parker hotel reveals a nasty shadow that is our to get Maria. The hotels history relays years of strange encounters on the 13th floor and this isn’t the first murder either. Can these cases be linked?
I really enjoy this series, slightly off the mainstream route, but provides a well written paranormal plot, with likeable main characters that have history together. I hope to see more books in the series.

Detective Maria takes one last call at the end of her shift, which brings her and her partner, Frankie, to a murder scene at a local hotel that has a checkered history with mysteries and murders. As soon as Maria steps foot in the building, she knows there is something wrong and very dark in the walls with an ominous sightings of the blue lady that is reportedly only seen by people prior to something bad happening.

The Girls on Floor 13 is a detective procedural mystery with a supernatural twist. Now, i will admit that the supernatural isn't my usial cup of tea, but i love Helen Phifer so much that I had to give it a try. I love the characters in this series. The Detectives are relatable, and i find their banter wnjoyable. Marias elderly neighbors are just 2 lovely women who are easy to fall in love with as well.

The writing is great. I love Helen's writing style and it is easy to fall into the story. They are quick reads, well paced.

The ending was a bit surprising in this book and left me with some questions for the series.

Overall, i enjoyed this book and would recommend reading it.

Thank you to Helen Phifer, NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.

Detectives Marie and Frankie happen upon a case when Maria answers the phone at the end of a long shift. Two teenage girls have been murdered and their feet removed and taken. Their bodies were found in a hotel. A hotel that has a reputation for being haunted. As they investigate Maria is targeted by whatever is in the Parker hotel, facing death more than once.

I will confess I am not a huge fan of the supernatural. However the way the author writes this series is fantastic. Maria and more so Frankie are sceptical and it takes a lot to get them to believe. While somethings are unbelievable I find that I am so engrossed in the whole storyline, they just fall into place. I enjoyed the pace of this book, and the unexpected ending. The final pages made me a bit sad but I’ve got my fingers crossed this isn’t the last time we see Maria and Frankie.

Loved it.

I haven’t read this author before, so I was interested in the ideas in this book. Supernatural and hauntings are not my favourite genre. However, the premise of this story was good. Maria and Frank are great characters. There are references to previous cases, which occurred in previous books in the series, but it is not essential to have read them to make sense of this book. It was an intriguing story that held my attention, although I did wonder about some of the police work. Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for an advance copy to review.

I love the author so was keen to get stuck in but I mainly ended up confused. O wasn't expecting the supernatural element and if the book was going down that route then I with they'd committed to it and really added in more creepy and scary elements. It all jist felt a bit half done. The police procedural side was entertaining and the actual murder side of it kept my attention. There were also a lot of random characters that seemed to pop in and out and have mo real purpose. Overall it all felt very unfocused and bitty...... like a bit serial killer a bit police procedural a but supernatural a bit romance...... and none of them fully committed to

When the bodies of two teenage girls are found in a rundown hotel room on the 13th floor of a New York City hotel, Detective Maria Miller is called to investigate. From the very beginning, strange and spooky occurrences happen, such as homicidal and suicidal ghosts. Maria is never quite sure who the killer is and puts her life on the line several times to solve the mystery. This book is a paranormal, ghostly, mystery thriller with a gripping plot and some added humor, Overall, the book is decent but the paranormal aspect didn't appeal to me. However, some readers may enjoy it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
When the bodies of two teenage girls are discovered in a rundown New York City hotel room, Detective Maria Miller is called to the crime scene. The best friends were supposed to be at a sleepover miles away in the suburbs. With no record of the girls checking in and the room on the thirteenth floor closed off to guests, what were they doing there?
Perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter, Mary Stone and A. J. Rivers, The Girls on Floor 13 will have you racing through the pages and sleeping with the lights on.
Good read - this book is a ghostly, mystery thriller with a great plot and some added humor. Loved the main characters which were a pair of detectives, Frankie and Maria. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and enjoyed the paranormal setting.

When the bodies of two teenage girls are discovered in a rundown New York City hotel room, Detective Maria Miller is called to the crime scene in The Girls on Floor 13 by Helen Phifer.

The best friends were supposed to be at a sleepover miles away in the suburbs. With no record of the girls checking in and the room on the thirteenth floor closed off to guests, what were they doing there? While Maria races to interview staff before another body turns up, the hotel manager shares an old newspaper article about an identical double murder decades before. Could the cases be linked?

The Girls on Floor 13 is a good supernatural story with a nice, sentimental ending. Some parts were slow, but overall, it was a solid story with good characters.

I look forward to more in this series. I like Homicide Detectives Maria Miller and Frankie Conroy as they have a fun relationship with good banter.

I would recommend this book, this series, and this author.

I started off hook to this story at first, until it went the paranormal route (i didn't realize this was the third book in a series). Overall the dialogue was a bit cheesy to me and the paranormal aspect was spooky at first but then everything just kinda fell flat at the end. Some of the side characters, ie Harrison, felt unnecessary ( i honestly thought he was the killer for a minute bc his character was so suspiciously placed in the story) i'm giving this 3 stars because i feel like a lot of things were rushed to wrap up and i still have questions to be honest.

Thank you Netgalley and publishers for the exchange of this ARC for my honest review!

Maria Miller is no stranger to the world of evil. A homicide detective by trade she has dealt with every human evil imaginable, but lately something unnatural is stirring and it seems to be attracted to Maria.
When two teenage girls are found dead in an infamous hotel that resembles a cold case from decades ago, Maria must battle supernatural forces to foil an entity who is hell bent on finishing their murder spree.

This book was definitely interesting. It went in directions I wasn’t expecting and it was an entertaining read. The paranormal elements are a fun twist on a police procedural, thriller.

In saying that I felt as though there were many unnecessary aspects to the work or that just didn’t make sense.
Large parts of the dialogue I felt wasn’t needed, especially by those who aren’t main characters. There is a lot of adjacent characters that we never see again that probably don’t need to be included.
The relationship/romance aspects are strange. They add nothing of value to the work and at one stage she says she’s falling in love with Harrison but then is jealous of her detective partner and has always had a thing for him? Unneeded.
The demon makes absolutely no sense. Is it a sleep demon? Not really… more research into paranormal entities and demons would have benefited this work.
