A classic by Mary Burton!!! It's always interesting when you drop into a book and the main leads have already kinda fallen for each other but they are slightly fighting it. Then you add in dead bodies and it makes for a really interesting read. I love that her books are always nice and long. You get to sit with the story and the people for a long time and I enjoy that!
Thank you to NetGalley, Mary Burton, and Kensington Publishing for an ARC copy of "The Hangman".
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Hangman! From the very beginning, the story had me hooked with its intense suspense and complex characters.
The mystery surrounding Julia's father's death adds an extra layer of intrigue, making the stakes even higher as she navigates both her professional and personal challenges. The discovery of the woman’s bones, along with the photograph of Jim and young Julia, was a chilling twist that deepened the plot and made the story even more intriguing.
If you're looking for a thrilling and suspenseful read that keeps you engaged from start to finish, I highly recommend The Hangman. It's a gripping tale that you won’t want to put down!
This was a textbook procedural book (heavy on the procedural) and it dragged for me. The plot was good and had so much potential but in my opinion graphic sex makes a mystery book cheap. I didn't love the side romance story between the detectives and it could have been taken out completely, the story would have been so much better without it.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of The Hangman by Mary Burton in return for my honest review.
This is the third book in the series and can certainly be read as a standalone. As a fan of Mary Burtons books I couldn’t wait to get into this one and it certainly didn’t disappoint with really likeable characters and a well crafted story which had me hooked from the beginning till the end. I definitely recommend reading this and Mary Burtons other books.
Julia Vargas is a police detective on leave who is investigating a case her detective father was involved in years earlier when he supposedly shot himself. This was good. Part of a series but the main characters change book to book, so they work as standalones too. 4 stars.
Fantastic as always, I love this style of story. I was hooked, and I enjoyed it so much. I hope other readers enjoy it also, would love to listen to this Im audio. Look forward to seeing more from this author.
Dark, and creepy as well as twisted , which means I loved it , in fact even though I've now read all 3 books of this series I'm doing a buddy read of them with a friend and we're already on book 2 , which means a re read of this one as well but what can I say I Absolutely love this series .
I did not realize this was book 3 so I went back and read the other 2 books first! I absolutely loved each one of these books. I will say that The Dollmaker was my favorite but this one was pretty good!
The Hangman by Mary Burton is another great read by Mary Burton! Thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting to keep reading until the end! This book will not disappoint!
Thank You NetGalley and Zebra for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
Man, I can’t believe I’m just now reading a Mary Burton novel. She does police procedurals so well! I definitely enjoyed this and look forward to reading more by her!
Mary Burton is a prolific author well known for packing alot of "thrill" into her thrillers. This has earned her a permanent spot on my TBR list. The Hangman is book #3 in the Forgotten Files series. Each book is a stand alone thriller. At the center of each story is a cold case that carries personal interest to the main characters. There are some recurring characters throughout the stories, but you can easily read them in any order. I do recommend you read the whole series just because I'm a Mary Burton fan and love sharing great books with everyone I know.
The Hangman is a serial killer. He is responsible for the deaths of several women but has never been caught. 25 years later, new clues have appeared and the investigation has resumed with a new generation of detectives. As promised, Burton throws clues that leave readers changing their guesses and turning pages as quickly as they can. An excellent read for lovers of the genre.
This is the third book in the forgotten files trilogy. While I like to read the books in order, this can definitely be read on it's own.
As with many of Mary Burton's books, Hangman starts out with action and keeps the momentum going. It's a great, fast-paced thriller that will hold your attention cover to cover.
Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Publishing. I received a free copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Hangman ended his killing spree 20 years ago. The Police officer investigating the case committed suicide and many people thought he was the Hangman. There are a lot of trails left by the author for the reader to follow to try to figure out the identity of the Hangman. The book is fast paced and will grab your attention from the first page. You won’t guess who the bad guy is until the author reveals it, I didn’t. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
I really enjoyed this read. I've read a lot of Mary Burtons books in the past and they are always consistently great. Easy to follow with lots of twists.
This book was so bad I couldn’t finish it and I made it 75% of the way in and that was generous of me to do that I wasted 3 days of just annoying time reading this yuck
How far would you go to find the truth? Julia has always wanted to find out the truth about her father. Was he a killer like they say or was he set up? She always knew that she would follow in his footsteps to become a cop. She has fought a hard battle to get where she is. Her last undercover case was almost her last and she knows that she has to take it easy. So when detective Tobias Novak calls her about a murder she jumps at it. But what they find doesn’t make sense to Julia. She now knows that the hangman is back & that her father could have been innocent. But when the clues start pointing to her father’s past she does start to wonder. Will the killer come for her next? A great read. Full of action & some romance. Julia is a strong yet vulnerable woman that doesn’t like to let people. Her father’s death broke her but I think that Novak will help her move on from the past.
Thank you Netgalley & the publisher for the copy. This is my voluntary review
Police officer Julia Vargas reopens The Hangman serial killer case her father, detective Jim Vargas, had worked on prior to committing suicide years ago. She’s determined to solve the case he couldn’t and prove or disprove the rumors surrounding his death. Tobias Novak is a homicide detective assisting her on the case. He’s also involved with her on a personal level. The two work diligently to uncover and follow clues but can they solve the case before more lives are lost, possibly even Julia’s?
An edge-of-your-seat thriller with plenty of twists and turns, and a surprising ending.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
*5 Stars*
Copy kindly received via NetGalley for an honest review.
This is one of those books that you can't put down. Lots of twists and turns, especially for Julia to find out the truth about her father and to finish what he had started. Novak was a great partner for Julia. Always trying to keep her calm and under control so she doesn't do anything to put herself in danger. Great characters in this. Would recommend.
This was a good suspense with a little romance sprinkled in. A serial killer who done it with a great twist at the end.
Thank you to Net Galley and Kensington Publishing for giving me this ARC in exchange for my honest review
For Julia Vargas, she is a cop on a mission to clear her father’s name and solve a case that has stymied the police and public alike. Even as she takes down the bad guys in her job, she is determined to get to the bottom of the Hangman Serial killer case that caused her father to kill himself three decades before. But the truth she is hunting down is elusive and can be deadly if she gets close enough to it. But when women’s bones show up in an empty house with a picture of Julia and her father when she was younger cause Julia to team up with homicide detective Tobias Novak, a man she has a complicated yet passionate history with. But as danger looms, Julia will have to confront her past in order to see where the truth is because the Hangman is determined to silence her once and for all.
Wow is all I can say after finishing the third book in the Forgotten Files series by author Mary Burton. I love this series so much. It’s a fast paced, police procedural series that has intriguing characters, captivating storylines and a few twists that you do not see coming. This author does an amazing job keeping the reader on the edge of their seat till the very last page is read with THE HANGMAN. I loved the first two books in the series (book 1-The Shark & book 2- The Dollmaker) and was eager to delve into this next book. I was not disappointed at all. The author delivers some pulse pounding, edge of the seat twists in the story that left me reeling, gave some former characters from past two books some time to shine in this third book and introduced a killer that chilled me to the bones.
Meet Julia Vargas. A cop like her father before her, she is determined to get to the truth of his suicide thirty years before as she delves into the one unsolved case from her father’s time, The Hangman serial killer. Entrusting the Shield Security to use their advance technology to help in getting her answers, Julia finds herself racing against the clock with detective Tobias Novak as the hangman comes back to play…this time Julia is in his crosshairs and the killer won’t settle until she is dead. I loved Julia. She was tough, independent and willing to ask for help from others. She was a strong woman in a male dominated job that had me rooting for her right from the beginning. She is paired with Tobias and man you can feel the sparks fly between these two. Past history between them comes into play and I loved how gentle he is with her even as she races head long into danger. All the characters are well written and engaging, the secondary characters from the past two books appear and help move the story along nicely and the author does a top notch job in keeping the suspense at high flame until the climatic ending.
If you enjoy suspense/thriller story that leaves you gasping for air, flipping the pages until the end page is read then you will definitely want to grab Ms. Burton’s The Forgotten Files series. Each book is stand alone story but loosely interconnect with some of the characters. I would definitely start with The Shark and read the books in order to get the best handle on the series. I am eager to see where this author goes next in this series and hope she continues in the future with more interesting cases and characters for her readers to enjoy and fall in love with.
