What a great book. I could’ve read this myself but I read it to my daughter. She had a lot of questions that the book answered. Now when I ask what are periods she says NORMAL and powerful. Thank you for writing such a concise but informative book.
My kids loved this book! It's super cute and wholesome and kept their attention the whole time during reading. I highly recommend this book and will purchase a physical copy.
Jessica Biel’s The Book About Periods is an excellent resource for mothers and their daughters who are approaching this important stage of life. The book is filled with great information presented in a way that is both easy to understand and not overwhelming. Biel covers the basics in a digestible manner, making it the perfect guide for young girls.
Reading this book together can open up meaningful conversations, helping to demystify periods and alleviate any anxieties. Highly recommend this book for families looking to educate and empower their daughters with confidence and knowledge!
Growing up, I learned about my body through the American Girl books. This book is so much simpler and easier to understand. I also appreciate how they added the lgbtq aspect to it as well. The color set of white and red really made it pop when it came to getting your attention. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to explain their periods and body's to an earlier age child.
Let me start off by saying this book is SO important. I'm only in my 30s, but I remember when I first learned about periods and the lack of information learned was astounding. Even though this book is for kids, which is AMAZING and MUCH NEEDED, I still learned some things that I never truly knew before. I would highly recommend this book to parents of children who will one day get their period because it really helps break it down in a simple and understanding way. We're always looking for great non-fiction books for children at our library and this one will definitely be one to add to that list.
This book is simply about PERIODS and to help start a conversation with your children about the inevitability of their first period. To help them understand that it is a normal process in one’s life as they go through puberty. This book is a great first step in the direction to open up conversations with young minds without enticing fear of the unknown or taboo topic. I like the simplicity of the book and illustrations that keep the topic at hand front and center without all the embellishments that usually accompany such books. I read this with my daughter who is on the precipice of her first period. She really enjoyed it and had follow up questions brought up in the book. This is not an in depth description of periods but instead a jumping off point for parents or caregivers.
*Thank you to Jessica Biel, Netgalley and DK | DK Children for the ARC copy. I am freely leaving my honest review.
So dull and disappointing, period.
Lol seriously? The celeb author is the only reason this book would be sellable or get picked up by anyone. There are chunks of text and zero pictures, which feels like information overload for a children's book. Super boring and no appeal at all, be it for adults or kids.
This book was profoundly disappointing. I requested it because my youngest child will be starting her period soon and I thought this could be helpful. The book is essentially a long picture book with large text and few (but complicated) words that tries to be encouraging but says virtually nothing except that people assigned female at birth shed the lining of their uterus once a month and that it’s normal and cool. It says sometimes your face breaks out or you’re moody and that no one should be rude to you about it. It takes 60 pages to basically say this in red and white pages with massive letters.
I was hoping for information on all the products you can use for periods and how to use them. I was hoping for information on mitigating things like cramps. I was hoping for talk about details like how long periods usually last and what to expect. I was hoping for talk about irregular periods, what can interfere with periods, and when you should see a doctor. There are so many things I thought would be covered but no, this is like a long but empty pep talk with advanced vocabulary in a young children’s book format. I didn’t bother showing it to my daughter. I don’t think this would have been published if Jessica Biel were not the author.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
Loved this book! The fonts and colors are very basic, but attractive, making it an interesting reading experience. The author doesn't go overboard with the information, just enough to educate a child as to what periods are. there's also notes for adults which I thought was pretty cool. I had my periods pretty young, and I know if I had something like this back then, it would put me at more ease. It's a very kid friendly book though I do wish it had more pictures to connect with the young readers. Overall, I think it's a great place to start the conversation with kids.
I loved the inclusive language that Biel uses in this book, making space for those who might not identify as female (at least all the time) but might still have a period. She explains the menstrual cycle in easy ways for kids to grasp, not shying away from things so commonly hidden in the past, like menstrual products, and describing what actually happens to the body when someone gets their period. My one criticism is that I would like to have seen some illustrations in the book, other than the background drawings of period products that fill blank spaces on the page. *Advance copy provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
My 10 year-old daughter and I read this together. We both found this simplistic and were hoping for more. It was very short and basic - each page only had one to two sentences and it took us about 10 minutes to read. I think it would have been enhanced by a few more details, as well as graphics and illustrations detailing the body parts and how the menstrual cycle works.
Whoa this book is so powerful yet so simple and absolutely a great starting point for discussing periods and menstruation with any kid! I read this with my 7 year old daughter who has LOADS of questions about her body, because she saw my body go through rapid changes of pregnancy, post-partum, then breast cancer and then having a full on hysterectomy. Being able to start this conversation with her now is huge as I don’t menstruate anymore and want to make sure I keep those lines open in our dialogue. I cannot wait to purchase a physical copy of this book!
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinion are completely my own.
I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I loved this intro to periods. It's very straight to the point and kid friendly. It also opens a time for dialogue and questions. I'm not sure I'll ever get on board with periods are cool thought. I do think period poops should be included, because no one told me about this and they should of.
This is a great starter book when talking to kids about periods. I love how this book uses a no-nonsense approach when talking about periods. She used the actual terms that are necessary for understanding your body and what is happening. This book is a super basic period book. It doesn't talk about the reproductive system or anatomy other than the uterus and ovaries, it mentions puberty but doesn't go into details, and it doesn't talk in detail about menstrual products. This is 100% just about periods. I think there was a huge missed opportunity here with that, I would have loved more information.
I absolutely love the positive talk about periods. Periods are too often talked about in a negative way, about them being gross or dirty, unnatural, and something to be ashamed of. This book makes it very clear that all of that is not at all true.
Would I recommend this book? I'm not sure, to be honest. I personally wouldn't buy this because I'd rather get a book that includes all this information along with more about the reproductive system, menstrual products, and more. This book doesn't do anything to make it stand out among the similar books other than the fact that it's written by a celebrity. That doesn't mean this isn't a good book, it would be a perfect addition to a school library or a part of health class.
This is a great book for young girls who will be going through puberty and will be navigating their first periods. This book is written in a really simplistic way yet gives lots of information. It's a perfect book to help a girl understand what will be happening to her body soon. As a mom of a ten-year-old daughter, I will definitely read this book with her.
Thank you to the publisher for the advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I wasn't sure what to expect here, but it was just okay. I would get this at the library, but I don't think I'd actually purchase it for my daughter. She's 5, but it's never too early to start thinking about these things. It is a good intro and I like the layout and fonts.
Did I read this while I was on my period? Yes.
Did I cry while reading this? Totally.
“A Kids Book About Periods” is the kind of book I wish I had read when I was a kid. It makes the topic of menstruation approachable and normalizes periods as well.
Is this the only book you need to discuss periods with your child? No. I do think this is a great introduction to the topic of periods and would be a great resource to use. I’d say this book focuses on the basics and the questions and feelings that might arise when first discussing the topic of a period more than anything else.
Thank you to NetGalley and DK for an advanced copy of this book.
Thank you NetGalley, DK Children, and Jessica Biel for the early access copy of A Kids Book About Periods.
A Kids Book About Periods is a positive affirmation that periods are normal, and the different experiences people have with periods are normal. The text and visual design of the book is clear, engaging, and eye catching. The wording choices are clear, concise, and relatable. This will be a great tool to explain what a period is, how they work, and why it is okay to be curious and talk about them. With an outro to adults, and defining information listed at the bottom of pages, this is a great addition to any collection tailored to 7 + year olds.
This is a wonderful addition to the "A Kids Book About .." collection.
I've come to trust this series immensely. I can trust that the information is correct AND inclusive. I can trust that the information is presented in a way that is understandable and clear by all. This book meets all of those expectations. Talking about periods is so important and so many people struggle with it; this book makes is understandable. I love so much that this is written by a boy-mom because so often we forget that boys should know about periods just as much as girls. If you are a person who wants to know how to talk about periods with younger folks and/or if you're a younger person who wants to understand, this book is for you! Correct info, easy to understand, no graphic pictures -- just a whole lot of NORMALIZING a normal occurrence! Well done, Jess!
I like that we have a book that is very open about periods. I wish I had this book when I was growing up because I experienced the same stigmatization of periods as the author did . I was not informed about what was happening with my body and it traumatized me. The book gives the reader the basics of experiencing periods without overwhelming the reader with information. The author does address the adults at the start of the book so the book is intended as a way for adults to start the conversation about periods with girls. The author is very conversational and friendly which makes the reader feel more comfortable when reading about periods which girls have been taught to feel shame for. Overall a great book to use to talk to girls about periods.
