Travels of Terror is a fun, inventive take on the traditional travel guides, and I was so wanting to hop on a flight to the USA to visit so many of these spooky places. A handful of the tales I've heard about but many I hadn't. Each place featured not only has a creey/spooky tale to tell about it but is followed by information like a travel guide has such as pop culture linked to it, true crimes that have occurred there, hidden gems to visit and see, horror movies and books featured/filmed there, women you should know about, places to stay at, eat and drink at and more.
There's so much to explore and I'd love to do a road trip of all these places one day.
This would be the perfect gift for any horror fan.

OMGGGG. I really had fun reading this one! I was looking for something a la A Haunted Road Atlas by Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz and I found it~
It was just so much fun travelling through various selected states and then selected cities/towns (with a gorgeous illustration that really bring out the horror/spooky vibes) and finding out more about the things that happened there (so many spooky things) + learn all about fun museums + delicious yummy foods + shopping (boooooook storessss) + other fun things. I want to visit so badly, but eh, I don't want to go to the US. XD The writing style really keeps you reading and I hope that there will be more of these travel books because I know, from Haunted Road Atlas and stories online, there is way more to be told! Bring it! I am ready~

I loved this unconventional travel book. I found out about several creepy places I hadn’t heard of before. I will be using this to plan a trip for next fall.

Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down. I really enjoyed reading it. It made me want to visit many of the places mentioned. Nice read especially the month of “October “. A unique twist on travel books, this one takes a look at scary destinations, offering information on infamous occurrences; places to stay, drink, shop, and visit; and other historical tidbits. As much as I enjoyed this book, I need to emphasize how regional their interpretation of an area is: some of the places they include in an entry are hours apart. Still, this was an enjoyable book that added significantly to my list of places to visit. #TravelsofTerror #NetGalley

Fans of ghosts and the macabre who also like to travel the USA will have fun with this book. For the most part, it picks one location in a State that has lots of spooky locations and stories.. It covers everything from the tours to take, the places to eat and the place where you might “rest” your weary head. Naturally, any of the suggestions have spectral connections so rest might not be in order.

There is advice on so many things including the best locations to get the best pictures and sometimes directions to take once you arrive. As if this was not enough, they even add fun stories to go along with the guides. The two authors are true afficianados of the supernatural and the book is written with a sense of fun but also a deep passion. In fact, while reading it, there were a couple of spots I thought I might like to visit. Four purrs and two paws up.

I have a strong need to go on a road trip with my twin now. This covers many, but not all, large cities in America with a haunted past, and provides suggestions for not just attractions, but food and lodging. A big plus for me is that the authors remain mindful of the history, the deceased, and their community with these suggestions. With dark tourism stuff, you sometimes get visitors so caught up in the taboo of it all that they forget the strong hurt and real people within the stories. Kelly and Meg have their heads on straight, and I appreciate that.

This is one of my favorite books I've read this year! This combines horror, true crime and history into one book! This book details various cities and gives recommendations on what to do, cool places to go to, where to eat and facts about each city. This is a fantastic well researched and put together book that I would recommend! Are ghosts real? Are there truly haunted places? And how can we know? Or do you know and just wish to visit? Taking a trip to visit the places that the authors have visited may answer these questions you have or don’t have. Perhaps you just want a thrill or be able to say that you were there. Regardless of the reason, this is the travel guide you need to have. Not only will you see these places but you get the best horror-inducing places, paranormal and true crime. History is given revealing hidden “secrets” and notorious true crimes besides women you should know. There are horror books and movie sets in each state given that are creepy. There are creepy, scary facts about some places around the nation that will give unexpected chills. The authors have compiled a list of what to do, where to stay, where to eat and drink, and where to shop to make your vacation-a chilling, fun adventure.

One example is in Los Angeles, California go and stay at the haunted Hotel Roosevelt where you may be able to see ghosts of actors. Have you ever gone bat hunting? You can in Austin, Texas. In Salem, Massachusetts, the execution of nineteen witches was the creepiest thing to happen. Also in Massachusetts is hidden gem which is the International Monster Museum. This museum is “part haunted house and part anthropological
museum of different cultures’ baddies.” The authors give the most famous true crime. There is also a list of spooky books and movies for Massachusetts. I was quite fascinated with the spookiness of Massachusetts. I hope the samples I mentioned inspire you to read the book as I did enjoyed learning about the different terrors of the United States. There is a bibliography notes that you will find interesting as I did. It includes an index.

Horror podcasters Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl present a travel guide for those interested in the spooky, horrific, and macabre. Covering a variety of sites across the US, the pair recount famous stories and list pop culture that is set in and around each location, in addition to the typical food, lodging, and shopping recommendations for travel guides. From Salem, MA to Portland, OR, the pair covers notable murders and popular series locations across a wide range of states and Travels of Terror tries to keep to only one chapter per state (though in the case of Rhode Island there is also a recommendation in Massachusetts— the Lizzy Borden house).

Each location includes some ‘day trip’ options of other spooky places nearby—though in the case of Salem, Amherst (one recommendation) is on the opposite side of the state and roughly 5 hours roundtrip. There’s a good variety of types of locations in the book, particularly in the shopping and where-to-go sections, covering everything from tattoo shops to bookstores.

I recommend that any pop culture nerds looking for trips for the spooky season check out this book to find where they’d like to go!

What a delight this was! I’ve always been curious about haunted places, especially local ones so it was awesome to see Providence Rhode Island make the cut!

I loved the overall aesthetic and format. I found the author’s recommendations to be a nice little touch and can totally see myself visiting a few on my travels!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I requested this book on NetGalley and was very pleasantly surprised. Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl’s Travels of Terror is not your typical travel guide. It’s an eerie and intriguing collection designed for lovers of the macabre, horror, the scary, and paranormal--and while I don't really consider myself a huge fan of those, I found it to just be an interesting guidebook packed with valuable insights for anyone who enjoys discovering unique destinations. The book seamlessly weaves together true crime stories (which I am a fan of), movie filming locations (also something I love), and local recommendations for places to eat, sleep, shop, and visit, making it an unexpected gem for travelers seeking something beyond the ordinary.

Despite the subject matter, which delves into horror, true crime, and the eerie, the writing remains approachable--it's warm and conversational, as if you're with two friends sharing their secret travel tips and recommendations. At the same time, they do delve into some serious topics like true crime with actual victims and other sad historical moments, but they give those stories the respect they deserve. It's informative and detailed without ever feeling like you’re simply reading a dry list of facts. In fact, it’s so engaging that I found myself jotting down several book titles to add to my TBR pile—another surprising benefit of reading this guide.

The authors have clearly done their homework—each destination is thoroughly researched, yet the tone never feels overly academic. Instead, it feels like you’re sitting with a friend who’s excitedly chatting about the coolest and creepiest places they’ve been. The attention to detail, from historical tidbits to present-day recommendations, makes it a reliable resource for travel planning.

For anyone who enjoys the darker side of life, or simply loves an offbeat adventure, Travels of Terror is an absolute must-read. It’s packed with information and inspiration, but it’s also just plain fun. I’ve already recommended it to several friends, not just those who are horror fans, but anyone who loves discovering unique and unusual travel spots. This was so much fun. Right from the get-go, you can tell that both Kelly and Meg enjoyed writing this book and all the travel and research that went into creating it. They thought about the audience they were writing for and put a lot of themselves in this book. It's fun, quirky, and filled to the brim with spooky places to stay, visit, and eat. I'm going to have to buy a physical copy of this book I can load full of colored tabs of places I have to go, places I should go, and places I too love! One of the many things I loved about this is some of the places they picked to travel to, I would have never thought to visit, but I kind of need to. I'm so thankful to have gotten a chance to read this early, it was a delight and I cannot wait to see it in print.

What a cool book! I did love learning about spooky places, and appreciated the vignettes with each story. Overall, I liked reading about the places one a time. I don’t necessarily think this is a book you would sit and read cover to cover.

Travels of Terror was a great read and I now want to go to every single place mentioned! I love the layout for each state’s key attractions and thought it was cool that authors Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl included places to stay, eat and shop in addition to the attractions.

The “A Woman You Should Know” sections were so interesting and I enjoyed reading about new stories I’ve never heard.

This would make a great gift or coffee table book for the terror enthusiast in your life. I can’t wait to grab my own copy!

This is a fun and informative guidebook for travellers visiting haunted spots around the united states. Chatty and heartfelt, the authors make the places come alive and this is a must for anyone visiting the places included in this book

Hands down one of my favorite books of the year. I am ready to jump in the car and visit these locations. Get to the scare with these fantastic stops, and prepare to score the gore with the best.

Travels of Terror is going to take you through a series of haunted spots. You might want to buy a map and start putting these locations on your "want to see."
