I have read many of the author's nonfiction books. I believe this is his first work of fiction. I was pleasantly surprised over the characterization and the moral challenges faced by the main characters. I was disappointed that it glosses over much of World War 2 in the Pacific. The book in effect serves as a prelude to a follow-on book the author is writing as part of a series, which will follow the main character through the post-World War 2 Navy.
