Loved more of Kate Green. I couldn't put this book down and read half of it in one day!! Lived how Kate fan girded over soccer and can't wait for the next installment in this series!!
Kate Green is a former Olympic soccer player turned sports reporter. This is the second book in the series and while it can be read as a standalone there are references to the first book that make sense if you’ve read the book. What I love about this book is how when I read it I lose track of time. I’m so invested in the story and feel like I’m there (still picturing scenes a few days after reading). When a book can make me completely block out the world, it’s a great book! Kate is a reporter but can’t resist investigating a crime further than a normal reporter would. If you like amateur sleuths, sports stories, great characters, wonderful world building this is a series you will want to check out.
This gripping book can be enjoyed even if it's your first encounter with Kate Green. But for fans who want to delve deeper into her past, starting with "Lights Out" unlocks the full depth of her story.
After a career-threatening murder case, Kate Green dives back into the game, reporting on the U.S. Women's Olympic soccer team. I was hooked instantly, especially by the flashbacks to her intense youth soccer days. These scenes perfectly capture the pressure young athletes face and how it can leave a lasting mark. The story takes a shocking turn when Kate uncovers a dark secret about the victim, one that rewrites everything she thought she knew.
Elise Hart Kipness weaves a story that captures the complexities of friendship set against the exhilarating world of sports.
Kate Green is back for the second book in the series. Dangerous Play can easily be read as a stand-alone, although reading book one enhanced my reading experience seeing Kate and her relationships develop.
As a sports reporter, Kate is covering women’s Olympic soccer at Yankee Stadium. There’s a lot of drama with the team and also with Kate’s employer. When a body is found in the stadium, Kate can’t help herself but to investigate parallel to law enforcement.
I loved the fast pace and mysterious red herrings that unfolded in this action-thriller. There are several side-storylines that played out in this book and I suspect the others will continue in future installments. Kate is a great character and I can’t wait to see where she goes next!
*The novel includes issues that some readers may find triggering*
The follow-up to Lights Out.
Kate, a former pro football player, is now a sports journalist with a knack for finding herself in the middle of murder investigations. When an old friend of hers is found murdered at the sports stadium Kate is reporting from, Kate is determined to find out what happened to her and why. To do this, she needs to find out to Alexa when they were teens. What made Alexa throw away her teenage relationship, her football career and her friends?
I really enjoyed this one, much more than the first one. I felt the cast of characters were a lot more interesting and a lot more likeable this time round. In the first book, Kate was a bit of a mess, dealing with the repercussions of a very public outburst, in this one, she is back on top form and showing everyone she deserves to be where she is. It was a great read, and it really had my heart going out to teenage Alexa.
I'd definitely recommend this, and I'm very excited to see what happens next.
As a sports fan and a thriller fan, this was a great read! I'd previously enjoyed Lights Out, the first Kate Green book, and this was an excellent follow-up. It was great to see further character development from the first book without it being strictly necessary to have read Lights Out first. Also, it kept me guessing about the killer, which is always the best way to enjoy a thriller. Definitely recommend!
What a thrilling battle of female competition of power. This second book in the Kate Green series was wrapped perfectly with a bow. The captivating twists, turns and jaw dropping moments make this series a must read!!!! A story within a story that collides for the perfect ending.
Another fun and engaging thriller from Elise Hart Kipness. Great to see Kate back to work on air, and covering her sport, soccer., I liked jumping from the present to the past as the plot unfolded at a great pace. And I love this author’s crisp writing style. Hope to see a third Kate Green book!
Kate is back and at it again! Kate's old roommate and former teammate is brutally killed in the ladies locker room during the Olympics games. Will Kate figure out who did it? Will it release the guilt she feels for what was don't to Alexa? Follow Kate's investigation as she digs to find the truth.
Once again Elise Kipness captures us from page one. We are pulled into a wild ride full of ups and downs! Highly recommend and eager for book 3!
Compelling..
The second in the Kate Green series of mysteries, following on from the excellent ‘Lights Out’. On this occasion, the feisty sports reporter is following up on a harrowing case and one very much close to home. As past crashes into present, deep secrets may well be exposed. Another immersive and compelling case, with a propulsive plot and a well drawn cast of characters. Written with a keen eye, well observed.
I was so excited to snag an advanced copy of the second book in this series, thanks to NetGalley! I absolutely loved it. Now, I wouldn't call it a thriller, but it's a fantastic mystery. I got really attached to the characters in the first book, and that connection carried over perfectly to this one. There are plenty of twists to keep you guessing and interested. While you could read this book on its own, I wouldn't recommend it. The first one really sets everything up beautifully for this one. Trust me, you'll want to start from the beginning!
This is book two of the series that features Kate Green, a former Olympic gold medal winning soccer player who now works as a sports reporter. After covering an Olympic match in Yankee Stadium she goes into the locker room to interview some players when she hears a scream. One of the players has discovered a dead body in the trainer's room. Kate is stunned to discover that the dead woman is a former teammate of hers named Alexa Kane She can't help but try to find out what happened. With the help of her father, a NYPD detective, she tries to figure out why someone would kill Alexa. Kate is an intriguing character; there are chapters about her past as a teen soccer player that show her connection to multiple characters in the present. The book also gives insight into the daily life of a TV journalist. The climax was a bit of a letdown but overall it was a solid book. I'm going to go back and read book one to get to know Kate better. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you, Net Galley, for the ARC of Dangerous Play! I couldn’t wait to read the second installment of the Kate Green series. Sports, a mystery, and a little romance - what more could you want? Elise Hart Kipness has a great writing style, that makes you feel as though Kate is one of your girlfriends. Like the first novel in the series, it was a fast moving and interesting who done it. Kate Green is a former professional soccer player turned reporter, covering the US Women’s Soccer team in the Olympics. When a dead body is found after a game, the stadium is mayhem. Kate is a sports reporter by day, and wannabe investigator by night. She reconnects with her estranged father as she delves deep into the murder that rocked the Olympics and US Women’s Soccer. I recommend this book, and can’t wait to read the next installment in the Kate Green series!
This book pulled me in from the beginning. Kate Green is back at work covering HER sport and engaging with people from her younger playing days. Alexa Kane, a former teammate from her teen soccer camp is found murdered at the women’s Olympic soccer game that she is covering as a reporter for TRP.
There are a lot of layers to the book and they play out well; her tenuous relationship with her detective father who is assigned to the case, her co-worker and boyfriend who is vying for an anchor job that is also offered to Kate, and her supportive children.
The book flips from the present time to years ago when Kate and her friend attended teen soccer Identification Camps for several summers. Their friendship is based on a love of soccer and being “newbies” while navigating the dynamics of the camp and other players. One of the other players from camp is the current coach of the Women’s Olympic soccer team. Present day, there is still some animosity between the coach and Kate due to events that happened at the camp. Did that lead to the murder?
Kate is also still trying to work out what happened with her dad Liam all those years ago that severed their family. They are reestablishing their relationship but Kate is sure there is something about on old case that is more than it seems.
Great read! I am looking forward to another Kate Green book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Elise Hart Kipness for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Amazing! I loved it everything about it! Kate Green series started out with book #1 Lights Out that came out 11/01/23.
It happens during The Olympic Games for the Soccer USA National Team, so you can imagine all the pressure and commitment of everyone involved.
This story has everything, it’s suspenseful, informative, competitive, and it goes beyond with so much more.
I really enjoyed the drama, suspense, the troubled friendship from the past that collided with the present, and also the intense stress that athletes deals with it, specially during special events like the Olympic Games.
Kate Green character is strong, funny and so dedicated, I am sure you will enjoy her too!
Thank you so much @elise and @netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Also thank you again Elise for the incredible gifted box.
This book is coming out on 09/17/24
Quick Summary: Reporter Kate Green is back, this time as the main reporter for women’s Olympic soccer. The coach of the USA women’s team is Savannah Baker, Kate’s former teammate and nemesis from her days of playing competitive youth soccer. In a shocking and unexpected twist, Kate and Savannah’s former teammate, Alexa Kane, is found dead in the therapy room ice bath after a game. Alexa hasn’t played for years and had no reason to be there. Kate’s father and NYPD detective Liam is on the case, along with the FBI, as they try to track down the murderer. Can Kate beat them to it, without making herself a target as well?
Thoughts: A reader new to this series could certainly read this novel as a stand-alone, but I would recommend starting with Lights Out to get a feel for the protagonist and her history. I got into this one very quickly, and enjoyed the flashbacks to the youth camps and difficult history between Kate, Savannah and Alexa. It really highlighted the intense pressure on young athletes and how that culture and environment can act on them in negative ways. Then the novel takes an unexpected twist as Kate finds out troubling things about Alexa’s past that she could not have guessed. If you enjoy thrillers and are a sports fan, you cannot go wrong with this series. Thanks to Thomas and Mercer/Amazon Publishing for the copy to read.
An absolute blast of a story -- with incredible dual timelines that only build for more tension. I can't wait to see what's next for Kate Green -- and highly recommend A Dangerous Play for all.
I made a mistake as I didn’t realize this was a series. While it didn’t require reading the first, I don’t like to read books in a series without starting at the beginning. I can’t stop thinking I’m missing something.
In the second installment of the Kate Green series, the title character is hopeful her coverage of the women’s Olympic soccer team will be enough to reignite her career as a sports reporter. After all, as a former player and Olympian herself, she can add a lot of insight.
Of course, nothing can ever be that simple. When a famous former teammate of Kate’s is found murdered, Kate finds herself forced to face secrets from her past as she investigates the gruesome death.
Kate is a likable protagonist; she is smart and willing to admit her shortcomings, meaning she does not typically do things to make the reader roll their eyes in frustration. It is refreshing for a main character to have self-worth rather than fall for romantic tropes. Her desire to make amends for her past only adds to her likability.
Fans of the first book in the series won’t be surprised to see Kate’s father reprising his role in this book. This time, the reader is given more insight into the hardened NYPD detective’s history. This allows a solid set up for the next book in the series.
While this is book two, it can be read as a standalone. However, the reader will gain more understanding of the full family dynamic by reading the first book. This series is a great choice for fans of the genre.
An absorbing mystery set in the world of women's football, the story follows how reporter Kate Green comes to find herself in the unenviable position of encountering a dead body in the women's locker room.
Not only that, the corpse belongs to Alexa Kane, a former teammate during Kate's years in the junior game. Kate has a troubled history with Alexa, who was part of a traumatic incident that occurred involving the current national coach, Savannah Baker.
In order to find out the full story of what lies behind this discovery, Kate will have to navigate through a maze that involves working with her previously estranged father, re-examining past relationships and uncovering unexpected links, and navigating a potential threat to her relationship - as well as, eventually, her life.
The characters are well done, and the story will appeal to sports fans. It gets 3.5 stars.
