Five years ago, Ryan and his girlfriend Ali were assaulted in his car and the last thing he remembers is her piercing scream as she is taken. She disappears without a trace, as well as her car, leaving Ryan as the prime suspect. The only thing he remembers is the man from that night. He’s never charged thanks to a good lawyer and no proof of his guilt. Years later, while Ryan is on a trip in Italy, he receives a call from his dad saying that Ali’s car has been found submerged in a lake in his hometown. Inside are two dead men and a note with five words written on the envelope in Ali’s handwriting: IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME… What really happened that terrible night and WHY? Ryan races through Italy, the UK and Paris to try to piece together the answers; he’s not alone though, a young sheriff’s deputy and a mobster are also out for answers.
BRAVO, Alex Finlay. 👏🏽 This was a pulse-pounding thriller with such an intricate plot and riveting characters whose paths intersect in the most explosive way! It’s twisty, with despicable characters and action packed scenes. This reminded me of a KARIN SLAUGHTER thriller, so well-plotted (if you didn’t know, she’s one of my FAVORITE writers.)
My only note is a small one - on audio, it was difficult in the beginning to keep track of all the characters (there are many) but it all comes together without confusion in the end. The audiobook performances are great. Overall, excellent execution, easily binged in a day.
Rating 4.5 stars
This book blew my mind. If I didn’t know better grammatically, I’d say it literally blew my mind. Except for one, I didn’t see any of the many twists coming and the foreshadowing of these twists, though very much included, was subtle enough that you had an aha moment right after reading the twist.
I would absolutely recommend this books to readers. It will stick with me for a long time to come.
This was fine, I didn't love it. Felt a bit far fetched overall and the characters a bit flat. The mystery was pretty good, I was a bit surprised at the reveal.
Wow! This one has a lot of moving parts!!
AND…a whole lot of twists and action…
Ryan and Ali were HS sweethearts.
One night Ali is in her car screaming…and Ryan gets knocked out and thrown down. When he wakes up, Ali is GONE. No trace of where she is or what happened…and all eyes are on Ryan.
His memory is sketchy at best, but he DOES remember some significant facts about that night…but no one believes him…
He is never proven guilty, and years later he escapes and changes his name.
On a trip abroad to Italy, with his classmates from law school, he thinks he sees the man from that night so long ago. But no. It can’t be.
Now determined to get to the bottom of what happened, he goes all in to find Ali and her abductors…killers.
But the roads lead him to places he’d never imagined…
And when they find Ali’s car in the bottom of the local lake, well, all bets are off!!
Terrific twists! Crazy escapades! Police involvement. FBI links. The mob. Double crossers…and so much more! This is one not to be missed!

This book was a wild ride and there were more than a few instances where my jaw dropped and I was totally surprised! There was action, some romance, multiple narrators, some mob men, lots of secrets, a kidnapping and murder, and so so much more! I really couldn't get enough.
Finlay kept me guessing the whole time. I had no idea how anything fit together or where the story was going. I was on the edge of my seat and kept looking for excuses to take a ride or do a mundane task so I could turn the audiobook back on.
The novel worked incredibly well as an audiobook. The pacing was fantastic, I liked the use of multiple narrators and thought each narrator did a really good job. It was exciting, thrilling, and unputdownable.
This is a pretty quick book. The audio wasn't even eight hours which was impressive considering how much plot is packed in there! Finlay delivered an expert story with well-developed characters and a streamlined plot. It was nice that some of the fluff we get in other novels wasn't included here and it felt like every (very quick) chapter packed a lot of punch.
Definitely recommend this one! Thank you to MacMillan Audio, Minotaur, and NetGalley for the copy. Don't miss this book!
Alex Finlay is back!!! He hits If Something Happens To Me right out of the ballpark. I had the audio version of this one and thoroughly enjoyed the multiple narrators! This is an addicting, fast paced story surely to keep the thriller lover completely engaged. Mr. Finlay weaves multiple storylines together that will keep the pages turning very quickly! Action packed and extremely intense, I was very taken by this heart pounding story!! That ending, well I did not see it coming!!! I highly recommend this one, Alex Finlay never disappoints.
Thank you NetGalley, MacMillan Audio and Alex Finlay for this compelling story to listen to and review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Loved this book, unfortunately I'm not sure if it's the audiobook itself or the Netgalley app, I could not get past the 52% mark. I was really disappointed because I enjoyed the narrators and their pace.
This book was so good on audio! The narrators were great and I found myself not wanting to stop listening! I actually started looking forward to my drives home in traffic! There were twists that I didn't see coming and I really enjoyed the ending of the book. Excited to read more from Alex Finlay.
If Something Happens to Me helped pull me out of a reading slump. It was fast paced and definitely twisty! There are a lot of characters but they and their storylines were easy to keep track of.
I listened to the audio while I followed along with the ebook. The different narrators made their characters come alive.
I always appreciate when storylines mesh together in ways I didn't expect! I've read a lot of reviews in which readers were confused by all of the characters in If Something Happens to Me but I didn't feel that way at all. I would have liked, however, to see more character development for a few of the main players so I could connect more with the story emotionally. All-in-all, this was a good read which I felt was on par with other Finlay novels I've read!
Thank you to @macmillian.audio and NetGalley for an opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of this audiobook!
Whoa! If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay is the standard for suspense and dynamic storytelling. Finlaty never disappoints! Cat and mouse games with brilliant connective threads... what a ride! You will get sucked in and feel like you are watching a movie, this book it very cinematic! Do yourself a favor and read this book... as a matter of fact, read all of Finay's books including The Night Shift, Every Last Fear and What Have We Done. You can thank me later :-) Also, the audiobook has great quality and superb narration.
I will start by saying that this was a fun read! There is lots of action, plenty of plot twists, and the multiple narrators were enjoyable to read. I think if you have read a lot of thrillers you may figure the twists out somewhat early on, but there are definitely some crazy things I wouldn’t have guessed. While I did enjoy it, I don’t think this was really the book for me - but I can definitely see the appeal, and you should check it out if the plot sounds good to you! A note on the audio: this one has a full cast narration, which was perfect! It read like a movie, and was super entertaining!

🎧Audiobook review 4.5🌟 (rounded up)
I loved this one. The audiobook is a thrilling ride that kept me on the edge of my seat. At just over 7 hours, it hits that sweet spot. I love books between 6-8 hours. I went in blind and the prologue was so vivid, I could picture it perfectly in my mind and I was instantly hooked. The full cast narration brought the characters to life and heightened my emotions.
The story felt a little chaotic, but in a good way. It was well-organized chaos. I was never bored, but I had to pay close attention to avoid getting lost because there was a lot going on. There are multiple timelines and points of view, which makes it fun to figure out how they all connect.
Overall, I found this audiobook thrilling, and it kept me engaged and entertained with its involved plot and lively narration.
It’s a yes for me!! 🖤
Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and Alex Finlay for the ALC in exchange for my honest review. It was my pleasure.
@deannsdailydrop
I listened to the audiobook with this story. It has 3 narrators. Helen Laser, John Pirhalla, and Paul Dateh do a fantastic job with the different story lines. The story kept me listening from the beginning. However, as the story progressed, some of it was predictable. I will say it didn't take away from the story, though. It's an easy listen and Alex Finlay can definitely write an interesting book.
Thank you to NetGalley, MacMillan audio, and Alex Finlay for the opportunity to listen to this book.
A big thank you to @netgalley @stmartinspress @minotaurbooks for the ARC & @macmillianaudio for the ALC of this book!
Alex Finlay’s latest thriller is true to his style, short chapters, fast paced storylines & ample characters. I enjoyed the way that this books kept me on my toes & was a fairly quick read & listen!
I struggle a bit when it comes to the number of characters, similar names and/or in this instance different names for the same characters. I think that was the main reason why I rated it a 4⭐️. A personal preference of mine in books, especially thrillers, would be to have less characters because I find that a lot of my mental energy then is spent on figuring out who is who, rather than paying attention to various details of the storyline.
I appreciated how this book brought in different layers of complexity in many different ways, crossing timelines & geography too! The way Alex Finlay writes about the settings & locations in his books with such attention to detail is definitely a strength as well!
If you’re looking for a bingeable thriller to keep you guessing & on your toes, look no further!
What a ride, my mind is blown! If Something Happens to Me is an addictive, intense, fast-paced thriller that definitely didn’t lack depth or complexity. I was so invested in this story that I couldn’t put it down, I had to figure out how all the pieces fit together; I binged it, in its entirety, in one afternoon.
Like most thrillers, there were several characters and the story took place in several locations across the world. There were multiple storylines going on at the same time as well. This is the kind of book that makes you think, so much so that I had to take notes on each of the characters, their locations and the details of their story lines. This isn’t a bad thing, I really enjoyed it, especially after reading several lighthearted “easy” reads. I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoiling it, but trust me when I say it is worth the read, just have paper and pencil ready to jot down notes. Do yourself a favor and go in blind, like I did, you won’t be disappointed!
I was fortunate enough to have an epub and audio copy of the book and appreciated having both. I listened to the entire story but used the epub to reference different characters, locations and story lines. Honestly, I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much and would have been confused if I hadn’t had both formats due to the depth and complexity of the story.
The audiobook has a multicast of narrators that did an incredible job and delivered a spectacular performance from start to finish! They were able to give each character a unique, clearly distinguishable voice bringing the characters to life with impeccable tones and inflections while creating a believable narration.
Thank you NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books, Macmillan Audio and Alex Finlay for granting me early access to If Something Happens to Me in exchange for an honest review.
This book was not for me.
I appreciated the narration, and the pace but even that did not detract from everything else.
I liked that this book was a quick read with short chapters, but I disliked most everything else.
- Every single plot twist was spelled out and predictable. Despite this, there were a ridiculous amount of plot holes in the story.
- There were far too many characters that held such minor plots that it was impossible to keep track of everyone.
- There were too many themes that the author was trying to work into a single book - mob story, missing person, police procedural, false accusations, on the run, revenge, etc...
- None of the characters were relatable or likeable, but they also weren't "love to hate" type of characters either.
- There were too many "action" scenes that felt unnecessary and like they were just there for the sake of including an action scene. They began to feel redundant.
Overall, it wasn't for me, but it might be for someone who is just getting into thrillers and likes or needs the extra push to get where the book is going,
I went back and forth between reading & listening to this one so maybe that payed a part, but I felt like there was a lot of characters in this story & sometimes it got pretty confusing. Aside from that, I did enjoy the story & I liked how everything came together in the end.
This is my fourth Finlay novel and it was enjoyable and well written, as were the others. Finlay does a nice job of creating unique stand-alone stories that keep you engaged and entertained until the end. In this story there are two distinct and unrelated story lines that I did not guess the overlap until the latter portion of the book. If you are a reader of thrillers/mysteries, Finlay is an author worth checking out.
The audio version uses three narrators (Helen Laser, John Pirhalla, Paul Dateh)) providing a rich and diverse listening experience. All the narrators do a good job of creating a voice that matches the age/importance of the characters.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for an early copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank You #Netgalley, Macmillan Audio, and Alex Finlay for the pre-release. To be published 5/28/2024. The audio is narrated by Helen Laser; John Pirhalla; Paul Dateh, Audio is clear and easy to listen to. This book is a mystery that was written so well. It starts in the middle and then goes around in a full circle. Nothing was ever to confusing and about 70% you get this AHH moment. I love those! No half stars so I am rounding up. I would recommend, it's a fast read and entertaining. Trigger warnings- Mob connection, kidnapping, murder, bullying, suicide.
